And then I got this poster for Christmas that had a bunch of chords on it, and I would just sit there in my room and practice those chords over and over again.

Immediately, I wanted to write songs and so, I kind of did, started writing pretty early.

They were terrible songs, but I started on guitar.

My dad's a really gifted musician, and he listened to records every day in the house.

But he mostly stuck to instrumental jazz.

It was a rare occasion where he would put on Stevie Wonder, or Donny Hathaway, or Marvin Gaye, Otis Redding, James Taylor.

So, those really were the biggest influences for most of my young life.

It wasn't until I started being able to buy my own music that I started to get into more contemporary rhythm and blues and soul music.

But I would say that Stevie Wonder and Donny Hathaway are still my biggest influences.
