She's the founder and president of the Children's Defense Fund.
Edelman was born June 6, 1939 in Bennettsville, South Carolina.
Edelman graduated from Spelman College in 1960 as valedictorian.
After graduation, she became involved in the Civil Rights Movement.
She was the first African-American woman admitted to the Mississippi Bar and she also was the first African-American woman on the Yale Board of Trustees.
She helped establish the Head Start program in 1973.
Later, Edelman worked to persuade Congress to overhaul foster care, support adoption, improve child care, and protect children who are disabled, homeless, abused or neglected.
