- Dancers, it is time for mind on the music.
So we are going to turn around sitting and face Tony.
- Thanks Tracy and Emma for leading us in that rocking dance about Mars.
We're going to put the whole dance together in a few minutes, but first we're going to compose a rock and roll song about this little red planet.
As you may remember, from past episodes, we use different musical elements to build a song much like when you build a skyscraper, you need different tools and materials to build it.
You've seen a skyscraper, right?
I've been in a skyscraper before but never on one that's being built.
This is definitely testing my fear of heights.
At least to have this helmet on, to protect me from falling objects or the ground.
(horror chord) Don't look down, don't look down, don't look down.
As I was saying, building a song, it's kind of like building a skyscraper in that you need different tools and materials to build it.
Reinforced concrete, steel, and curtain walls of glass and polished stone are some of the main foundations for building a structure like this.
It's kind of like what the drums and bass are like for building a rock song.
There are also hundreds of other tools and materials to build a skyscraper like rivets, cranes, wood, stone.
I could keep going on and on, but I want to get off the skyscraper before I lose my lunch.
It feels great to have my feet back on the ground again, if you would have told me that I was going to be dangling my legs off a skyscraper, some 70 stories above the earth when I woke up this morning, I would have laughed in your face.
Any who let's get back to building a rock song about the planet Mars.
We're going to use these five musical elements to build our song.
A beat, bass line, chords, lyrics and a melody.
Beat is also known as the rhythm of a song, In CTB, we love to celebrate the beat.
It's the name of our company, ♪Celebrate the Beat.
The kind of beat that we're celebrating and writing a song about in this episode is a rock beat.
A rock beat has evolved from earlier Americana music, the accent the backbeat, or the two, and the four of the beat.
One TWO three FOUR One TWO three FOUR Let's hear what a kind of rock beat sounds like.
(simple drum rhythm playing, bump bump bumb tsh) The bass player holds down a low melodic line, that grooves with the drums.
The bass is to the drums is like peanut butter is to jelly.
They stick together so well.
Together they make the foundation of a song, much like how reinforced concrete and steel make up the foundation of a skyscraper.
Let's add some bass to that Rock beat.
(same beat plays, adding some bass guitar) Chords are the third element to our musical structure.
In many styles of rock music, the electric guitar plays what's called a power chord.
A power chord is made up of only two notes.
The root note, and the fifth note, giving it that driving powerful feeling.
Let's hear what a guitar power chord sounds like.
Use the air guitar.
(rock guitar in the same beat playing) Put your rock face on.
Next, let's find some inspiration from Mars for our fourth musical element, the lyrics Mars is the fourth planet closest to the sun and is named after the Roman God of war.
It's the second smallest planet in our solar system and has two moons Phobos and Deimos.
Mars is also known as the red planet from all the iron on its surface.
We continue learning more about the planet Mars.
And as of 2021, there have been 49 missions to our neighboring planet.
Those are some good facts that we can create a song around.
I love how Mars is known as the God of war, especially with a rock song, Mars, the God of war.
It's also a little red planet made of iron.
We could use that as our second line.
And instead of saying iron, we could say iron ore to rhyme with war.
(rhythmically) Little red planet made of iron ore, we know that there's a lot of things that's left to explore.
Is a fun line that encapsulates all our curiosity about the planet.
We can then bring it back to talking about Mars again, The God of war Mars, the God of war.
Let's add the fifth element, a melody, to our Mars rock.
( repetitive guitar chord, dun dun dun dun) That sounds cool.
Building with the guitar power chords.
Let's add the drums and bass and then come up with a melody to match that groove.
(simple upbeat rock song) Here we go.
1, 2, 3, Rock on.
Let's learn our Mars song by breaking it down line by line.
I'll go first.
And then you go, I go, You go.
I go.
You go.
Nice, let's put those two lines together.
One, two, here we go.
Sick.
We're halfway done.
I go first.
And then you go.
You go.
I go.
You go.
Excellent.
Let's put those two lines together.
One, two, here we go.
There's a few words in that phrase.
Let's try it one more time.
We go.
Rock and roll.
I think we can put the whole song together.
Let's do it twice more.
Starting with Mars.
The God of war two, three, we go.
Whoo!
I hope you enjoyed singing that song about Mars, where you singing along?
Now, we're going to do that dance one last time with Tracy and Emma, but (static interference) could it be?
I think it's Marcella the Musical Movement Muse.
I think she has a message for us.
(ethereal music) - [Marcel] (speaking French) - Merci monsieur Tony.... A bonjour le danseurs I am honored to be with you again.
Now today we are on Mars.
On Mars the average temperature it is minus 81, so cold.
The average temperature on earth, where you are, it is 57.
I have a math problem for us.
What is the difference between minus 81 and 57?
What is it?
Think Think Ooh You got it?
It is 138 degrees.
So today to get ourselves ready to dance, we do one breathing.
Come with me.
This is for the focus.
Now to get up, we do three positions.
One, it is with le mains, the hands.
One Two, the feet they kick out.
Three, we jump up.
And now we are ready for the 8 jumping jacks to get the heart ready.
They are not typical jumping jacks.
Those there for you dancing.
Dancers.
Here we go with me.
We have a one, we have a two, we have a three, we have a four, we are half way there, we have five, we have six, we have seven, last one, eight.
Voilà.
I pass it back to you, Miss Tracy, to dance on le Mars.
- One last time, putting it all together.
M-A-R-S Five six get ready.
Here we go.
(minor cord upbeat music) (applause) Shake it out.
I hope you enjoyed that.
- Thank you so much for joining us today.
We have a special way of saying thank you and goodbye here with Celebrate the Beat.
