Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorship(cheerful folk music) - [Narrator] Labeled "A Reluctant First Lady," Martha Washington shaped what the position would become years after her passing.
A fixture among Patriot circles, Martha spent half the Revolutionary War in General Washington's camp.
She performed secretarial duties, knitted for soldiers, and visited hospitals.
Her hands-on involvement and compassionate attitude led to civilians and soldiers dubbing her "Lady Washington."
Despite her desire for a quiet life after the war, Martha was determined to be cheerful and happy and make the most of her circumstances.
From hosting members of Congress and dignitaries twice a week to greeting the public and attending memorial services, Martha's warm and friendly personality ingratiated her with Americans and figures abroad.
Her empathy for the needy, attendance at civic functions, and public speaking helped set a precedent for future First Ladies.
