(audience applauding) - Faculty, you may be seated.
Good morning.
On behalf of Michigan State University, welcome to the Spring 2023 Master's degree commencement ceremony.
Students, are you ready for your degrees?
(audience cheers and applauds) And to everyone, welcome to Breslin Center, home to so many Spartan athletic triumphs and celebrations of academic achievement.
And to those joining us by livestream, greetings as well.
Today we recognize the excellence, focus and dedication demonstrated by our master's degree earners to arrive at this milestone in your academic journeys.
Let us first salute the families and friends who have been so vital to your success.
Will attending family and friends please stand as you're able, and, graduates, can we have a big cheer for them?
(audience cheers and applauds) There is another group I want to acknowledge that has been so pivotal to each of you as scholars who have guided and mentored you, Michigan State's world-class faculty and academic staff, please stand and accept our thanks.
(audience cheers and applauds) Students, shortly we will hear from our honorary degree recipient and keynote speaker who's an accomplished leader in her field.
I'm looking forward to introducing her to you in just a moment.
Indeed, at Michigan State, we've been privileged to hear many dignitaries through the years inspire Spartan graduates with their words and with their examples.
In 1907, President Thoedore Roosevelt spoke on the 50th anniversary of MSU's opening.
Roosevelt was a firm believer in civic virtues, and I think of your class as I read one of the things he said.
"I believe in the happiness that comes from the performance of duty, but I also believe in trying.
Each of us as the strength is given us to bear one another's burdens.
I believe in the happiness that comes from the performance of duty, but I also believe in trying.
Each of us as strength is given us to bear one another's burdens."
Graduates, you and your families have been through a lot on your higher education journey.
You have carried extraordinary burdens, from COVID-19 to February 13.
You rose to these challenges by taking measures to keep yourself and others safe.
You adapted to fulfill your academic and research programs.
Your degrees prepare you for a future we try to foresee, but your shared experiences equipped you for what nobody could foresee.
And today, Class of 2023, you are bound together by the challenges you faced and through them the care you demonstrated for one another.
When I pass and look up at Beaumont Tower, the site of our original campus building, I often note that its peaks are not alike and seem to beckon us to look further upward and to reach higher.
Graduates, we are so impressed with how high you have reached.
And today we are proud to celebrate your academic and other distinctions.
We are also proud to celebrate our diversity with the flags of our students native lands and your various academic paths with the banners heralding the colleges.
And as we confer your degrees later, we acknowledge the individuality of each of you, even as your identity as advanced degree members of this Spartan family offers you a special distinction.
You are a remarkable graduating class.
And I want you to hold onto that thought until I return at the end of today's ceremony to deliver my presidential charge to you, the Masters Class of 2023.
(audience applauds) I am very confident your degrees will serve you well wherever you go from here.
And I want to thank you for your partnership in fulfilling the university's commitment to creating knowledge and transforming lives.
So let us celebrate this joyful occasion with our colleagues, families and friends.
And we ask our guest to join students and faculty in singing one stanza of "The Star-Spangled Banner" performed by the MSU Wind Symphony under the direction of Dr. Kevin Sedatole, professor and director of Bands of the College of Music.
The singing will be led by Amira Coleman, a graduate student in Music Performance.
Upon conclusion of the singing, please remain standing for a moment of silence.
Please join me in standing.

And as you remain standing, I ask Interim Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs, Thomas Jeitschko, to join me at the lectern.
On this joyful occasion, let us also acknowledge our pain.
Those we lost in the violence of February 13 will be recognized with posthumous degrees at their undergraduate college graduation ceremonies.
(audience applauding) They are forever a part of our Spartan family.
So let us pause here for a moment of silence to remember them, their families, and those recovering from their injuries and to acknowledge all of those who have been impacted.
Thank you, please be seated.
Interim Provost Thomas Jeitschko will now present this morning's candidate for the awarding of their honorary degree.
- Dr. Hruby, please come forward.
Interim President Woodruff, I have the honor to present Dr. Jill Hruby for awarding of the honorary degree Doctor of Science.
- Dr. Hruby, you are a highly accomplished leader and have dedicated your life to National security service.

Your educational achievement include earning your bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from Purdue University and your master's degree in mechanical engineering from University of California at Berkeley.
Under your guidance as an administrator for the National Nuclear Security Administration, you have developed and maintained new technologies and processes that have heightened the nation's nuclear security, arms control, and Navy reactors.
While serving as Director of Sandy National Laboratories, you managed and assisted in the creation of innovative science-based systems engineering solutions to our nation's most demanding national security challenges.
You have served the inaugural Sam Nun, distinguished Fellow at the Nuclear Threat Initiative, a member of the Defense Science Board and the National Academy of Science Committee for International Security and Arms Control.
Your work as a spokesperson for women in engineering and mentoring is an inspiration to all Spartans.

Additionally, you've been awarded the Suzanne Jenniches Upward Mobility Award from the Society for Women Engineers and have been named as the second most powerful female engineer.
Your numerous awards... (audience cheers and applauds) Your numerous awards are impressive and demonstrate your knowledge and devotion to this country.
For your notable career in engineering and science, leadership in nuclear security and dedication to the development and enhancement of national security, I am pleased to award you the honorary degree of Doctor of Science from Michigan State University.
(audience cheers and applauds) (audience cheers and applauds) - Good morning, Michigan State graduates of 2023.
Congratulations to you for getting here today for what has been a challenging time in the United States and around the world.
You have risen to the challenges and you have succeeded.
None of us choose the era in which we live our lives.
In the formative years of my life, the world was engulfed in a technology race to space between the US and the Soviet Union that grew into a nuclear arms race.
We saw the promise and the peril of humanity's innovations.
Humanity's first steps on the moon were shown on black and white TV.
I watched those right here in Michigan.
The United States and the Soviet Union went on to each amass about 30,000 nuclear weapons and we feared the possible extinction of humankind.
The environment, no doubt influenced my career choices to be an engineer to spend 34 years working at a US National Security Laboratory and now to serve as the undersecretary for nuclear security at the Department of Energy.
Most of you were born in an era of intense technological change and innovation and relative world peace.
You grew up at a time when the human condition could be improved to a fuller extent than ever before.
You witnessed the normalization of smartphones, video communications, electric vehicles, social media, and RNA vaccines.
At the same time, you witnessed the impacts of climate change, a pandemic, a surge of extreme politics and terrorism, and the human cost of drug addictions.
These trends have surely influenced your lives and likely your academic studies and your career choices, probably in ways that aren't entirely obvious yet.
Your endurance is remarkable.
As you move from your time of education and growth to one where you will make your contribution to the world the challenges will be significant, but you have the tools to succeed.
The world has already taught you resilience.
Today's technology has placed an unprecedented amount of data at your fingertips, and Michigan State has given you an incredible foundation.
You are ready, and you don't have a moment to lose.
The world is not sitting still.
Today, existing norms are being challenged at many levels and questions are being asked.
Will the aggressive actions taken by Russia, China, North Korea, and Iran change the international order?
What is free speech and public good in the age of social media?
How will climate change impact your children?
New technologies from artificial intelligence to gene manipulation are providing both great opportunities along with fear of changing life as we know it.
Today's mesh of social concerns continue to grow and expand, including equity, justice, critical minerals, and new wars.
So at this critical milestone of graduate school commencement, it is worth talking about how you can make the world a better place, and in turn, make yourself a better person.
Invest energy in understanding the problem you are trying to solve before creating solutions.
Devote real time to this.
Keep coming back to it.
This is not as easy as it sounds and I frequently reframe problems several times before I begin to make any progress on a solution.
As an example, in my work on nuclear arms control, Russia recently suspended their participation in the New START treaty.
This frequently gets stridently reported as Russia's withdrawal from the last remaining bilateral treaty with the United States.
That's accurate, but from my perspective, the problem is that Russia suspended the only treaty that places limits on the number of nuclear weapons.
With this framing, the United States needs to find mechanisms to limit the number of nuclear weapons around the world, including our own.
This is not an easy problem, but it's focused.
I hope some of you will find your calling in national security.
We need new ideas and new optimism that the world can be made safer, more prosperous, more peaceful, and more just.
Next, use technology as a tool.
It's never the full solution, but it's almost always a part of it.
As the artist Laurie Anderson said, "If you think technology will solve your problems, then you don't understand technologies and you don't understand your problems."
All problems have social aspects.
In my world, arms control agreements must be accompanied by monitoring and verification technology.
The monitoring techniques can be very technical and very important.
Equally important and almost always included in such agreements is the exchange of data.
The full verification regime is therefore usually based on both technology and honesty, and the two must be mutually reinforcing or the agreement will fail.
Maybe some of you will deepen the link between technology and trust.
As you build your career and life, don't be afraid of change and don't be afraid of occasional diversions.
Knowledge accumulates.
Offbeat knowledge is often what is needed to connect things.
Steve Jobs said in his famous 2005 Stanford commencement address that his class in calligraphy was key to making beautiful typefaces on all computers today.
Let connections occur.
Get good at finding obscure relationships.
Maybe you will make connections that alleviate extreme weather.
Find the right combination of confidence and humility.
Have enough confidence to rethink problems, to use technology, to appreciate diversions.
But know your limits.
Turn to others when you need help, and offer assistance to colleagues.
As a woman in technology, starting my career now 40 years ago, I learned continuously that being gracious helps in everything I do.
And I truly believe, as frustrating as it is sometimes, working on being gracious has made my life better.
Work at things that will make you a better person.
Finally, soak up successes, beginning today.
I look forward to what you will do.
Your parents and friends look forward to what you will do and the world needs you.
No one can stop you now.
Congratulations, Spartans.
(audience cheers and applauds) - Thank you so much, Dr. Hruby, who joins a distinguished list of MSU commencement speakers through the years, including US Presidents Theodore Roosevelt and Bill Clinton, former President Harry Truman, and future presidents Richard Nixon and Gerald Ford.

(audience cheers and applauds) (audience members cheering) - Will the Master's graduates please rise.
(audience cheers and applauds) I welcome you to the community of scholars, MSU Alums.
May your MSU degree lead you to a future filled with outstanding personal and professional achievements.
I hope your university experience has been all that you expected and more, and that you take to heart how the world urgently needs the unique qualities each of you have to offer.
President Roosevelt, whose speech I quoted earlier, also wrote, "Knowing what is right doesn't mean much unless you do what is right."
My charge to you, class of 2023, is that you know and also do right in the world.
I also want to remind you that a different world cannot be made by indifferent people.
You, the Master's degree class of 2023, have demonstrated that you are not indifferent.
My charge to you is that you go out and continue to make a difference in the world.
Know that you join a distinguished line of Spartans who have contributed so much to their families, the community, and the world since our first graduating class 162 years ago.
I wish on behalf of this entire university that your lives are joyful, loving, and rewarding, and I charge you now to stay connected to this special place on the banks of the Red Cedar.
Go green!
- Go white!
(audience cheers and applauds) - I now invite our MSU 2023 Masters class and all assembled to join in the singing of the first stanza of the alma mater.
Your first time singing your alma mater, "MSU Shadows."
You'll find the words in your program.
Mrs. Coleman will lead us in the singing.
Following the singing we ask everyone to be seated during the recessional as the platform party, faculty and students leave the stadium.
Thank you.
