(audience applauds) (audience applauds) Have fun.
- Thank you.
This is a surreal moment.
So, 30 years ago I stood here getting my degree as an undergrad, so I'm truly honored to be with you today sharing my love of MSU, a place that will always feel like home, much like the first day I stepped onto campus.
I'm humbled to be included amongst the previous esteemed commencement speakers.
Thank you to President Guskiewicz and Provost Jeitschko for this opportunity.
Congratulations to the graduates, their friends, and their family that supported them for how they achieved to be here today.
Today is the visible celebration of the culmination of your hard work, for many of you, while also working full-time or with your family.
When I shared with my family and friends that I was asked to provide remarks today, I had a lot of advice on what to speak about and some who told me I should just use Chat GPT.
(audience laughs) You can appreciate that I did not.
(laughs) I settled on sharing a brief bit of my story and some advice that I thought would help you as you embark on this next chapter in your professional lives.
First, I want to acknowledge that any success you will achieve is very rarely on your own.
To be successful in your career, many individuals are involved in supporting you.
For me, that includes my parents, my husband, my closest friends, the Credit Union's Board of Directors, and countless individuals that have provided me professional and personal advice.
When I speak to students, many express interest in hearing my story and how I have reached the position of CEO at the Credit Union.
My journey begins with my mom, who is here today.
I'm a first-generation college student on both sides of my family and a first-generation U.S. citizen on my father's side.
My mom became a single parent when I was 10 years old and she instilled in me the value of education as the path to achieving personal and financial success.
In my childhood, we at times experienced living in government-subsidized housing, free lunch programs, and for a period of time, we didn't have a vehicle.
To be able to attend MSU as an undergraduate, I worked two jobs in high school and three while in college, and my mom worked just as many to help me and support my dreams to attend MSU, and that is why my story always begins and ends with my mom who sacrificed the most for me to be here on this stage today, I have worked at, (laughs) (audience applauds) I have worked at MSU FCU for 27 years and have held a variety of positions, starting at an entry level to my current role.
I do recognize that staying with one employer that long is very unheard of today.
However, because my job continued to evolve and change, I often found myself in a new role every two to three years.
As a result, I have been involved in and led significant growth and exponential changes through our work serving our members.
Maybe some of you are those members.
And due to the generous employee benefits in my early career at the Credit Union, I was able to return to MSU to complete my master's degree while working full-time at the credit union.
I tell you these small parts of my journey because they shape the reflections I wish to share with you today, and maybe one of you might see yourself in my story.
When I was graduating with my master's degree, I did not have a goal or a plan to achieve becoming a CEO.
With an advanced degree, it is likely many of you are embarking on a professional career that may lead you to a leadership role, possibly even be a CEO.
Being a leader of self, others, and community takes personal fortitude and discipline to be your best self every day.
As you celebrate your achievements and begin your career, the one thought I want you to keep in mind from my remarks today is that every day is a job interview.
You are leaving MSU with knowledge and skills that you did not have before you took your first graduate class.
Many of you are leaving with determination to shape your own future and possibly change your community, or even the world.
From my perspective, the world, whether local or global, is a perpetual job interview and every day presents an opportunity to showcase and demonstrate your potential.
We often think that our next opportunity hinges on a series of one-hour interviews, but in reality, it is how you present yourself day in and day out to those around you.
Your actions, words, emotions, they all contribute to the impression you leave on others.
Each interaction, each decision, is a chance to demonstrate your character, compassion, values, and your work ethic.
What does it mean to treat every day as a job interview?
Do you treat people with respect and kindness, as if that person might be your future boss or your future employee?
Both those situations happened in my career.
My first boss at the Credit Union was a person I worked with as an intern at Michigan State years before I would apply to work at MSU FCU.
And in my movement the CEO position, many of my peers became our employees and some, my direct reports.
It means embracing excellence in everything you do.
It means being prepared and ready to learn.
It means volunteering to do more.
In my career, this meant learning as a marketer, not a software developer, how to code websites, agreeing to hard projects that equated to long hours of work or the projects that no one else would take.
Being curious to learn and creatively solve problems are characteristics every employer is seeking.
Saying yes to new opportunities demonstrates those to your employer.
It means being a leader, a contributor, a cheerleader, or devil's advocate based on the situation.
Professional progress is not linear.
Sometimes you need to step backwards or sideways to achieve your next goal.
It means being your authentic self, while being a good coworker.
And yes, sorry, group projects do not go away just because you have graduated.
In fact, they become more frequent and complex.
And it's no longer about a grade, but about your career and the success of your organization.
It means being true to yourself and to stop trying to be someone you are not.
You will spend too much energy being that version of yourself and it will distract you from the good work you are doing.
It also means being adaptable, flexible, and willing to learn.
Sadly, it's true, none of us are perfect and we still have much to learn.
It means ensuring that your personal core values align with those of your organization.
Show how you can contribute with your unique skills and mindset to add value to those in your professional and personal life.
For me, this means aligning with the Credit Union's core values and living our mission.
I am always and have been focused on our members, helping them achieve financial success, their goals and dreams because I uniquely understand what it means to have financial knowledge to improve your ability to create generational wealth for your family.
When I said yes to new projects, to assignments no one else wanted.
When I showed up to help others complete their work, people noticed and I was provided more opportunities because my body of work and previous interactions were in effect, a small series of interviews.
To this day, I live by, every day as a job interview.
Every class I speak to at MSU, it could include our future employees.
Every professor and administrator could be a Credit Union board member and my future boss, which is more than once happened here.
But most importantly, I want people to know that the person they see in front of them will be the same person each time they meet me.
I'm often told I'm approachable and that seems so surprising given my job title and responsibilities.
I'm not my job title or a CEO persona.
I'm still myself interviewing with you because your interactions with me are important to me and hopefully to you.
So thank you for being a part of my biggest job interview to date, for my ending thoughts, and yes, that means we're wrapping up.
I encourage you to be yourself.
Take the interesting job offers, those that enhance your knowledge, not just move you up a level, but be curious and continue reading.
When you are able, give back your time, talent, and treasure.
Because many at MSU were there to offer me my first job, spending time assisting me with classroom assignments and helped me prepare for my first professional interview.
As soon as I was able, I returned to MSU to volunteer and mentor students.
And then when I had the financial ability, I created a scholarship to help other students who were like me all those years ago.
Lastly, know that you were just beginning your career of continuous learning and not ending it.
And maybe stop to think if each moment were a job interview, is this the impression I would want to leave with everyone around me and would it get me hired?
Congratulations graduates, the world awaits your unique passion and potential.
Go forth and live every day as if you were interviewing for your dream job.
Go Green!

(audience cheering and applauding) - Okay, we're almost to the finish line.
(all cheering and applauding) That was fun.
We're just gonna, I wanna recognize there was one group earlier in the program that we failed to ask to stand to be recognized, and that's the Master's in Global Health.
So, will the master's degree candidates in global health, please rise.
(audience cheering and applauding) And remain standing.
Will all of the educational specialists and masters graduates, please rise as you are able, (audience cheering and applauding) I welcome you to this community of scholars, MSU alums.
Please join me in congratulating these degree recipients, one more time.
(audience cheering and applauding) Graduates, there are many ways.
There are many who celebrate with you, people who have been with you throughout your academic journey, who rooted for you and perhaps helped you cross this finish line.
They might be parents, siblings, aunts and uncles, grandparents and friends.
so let's show our appreciation to all the family members and friends who have been so important in your journey and are here or joining by livestream to share the moment.
Will the family and friends please rise as you are able to receive the appreciation of today's graduates.
(all cheering and applauding) There's another group of people richly deserving of our recognition, the amazing world-class faculty and dedicated staff who supported your successes at Michigan State University.
Can we show them our appreciation too.
(all cheering and applauding) Thank you.
(all cheering and applauding) As an educator, I can tell you there are few joys greater than watching those you have taught and mentored become the knowledge leaders of tomorrow.
So graduates, as you finish this chapter of your life's story, and consider what you will write in the next.
I want to pass along some guidance from Frank Herbert, the author of the "Epic Dune" series.
"There is no real ending.
It's just the place where you stop the story."
This then is a milestone, but not the finish line in your journey.
Now, you carry your experience to a new chapter in your lives.
Joining all a proud line of Spartans who went before you, bringing your talents and energy to a world in need of both.
Last week, I had the great fortune of sharing a meal with somebody who did just that.
Clifton Wharton Jr.
Served as Michigan State's president through most of the 1970s, and there might be some alumni here who remember him, the first black president of a major US research university, a trailblazer in many other ways.
(all cheering and applauding) And at nearly 98 years of age, he gave me some wise advice, and I sat and listened for an hour and a half, and I'm gonna bring a lot of that back here on the campus.
I met him up in New York City alongside his wife, Dolores.
But in an interview some years ago, he offered advice that I think is applicable to everyone here.
He said, "Be prepared.
Be prepared, and always look for the kind of opportunities where you think you can make your own way and contribution to society."
Members of the graduating class of 2024, this is my parting charge to you.
Remember those who made this moment possible.
Not only the family and friends, but generations of citizens, taxpayers, donors, and Spartans who have supported this great university for more than 160 years.
Your experience here and your degrees equip you to make a difference for yourself and for others.
As President Wharton would have it, you are prepared.
I urge you to continue your service to society by staying curious, staying engaged, and remaining committed to the scholarly and personal integrity that underlays the mission of Michigan State University, and I hope you remain connected to this special university as you join the ranks of a half million Degreed Spartans, making the world a better place.
Go Green!
- [All] Go White!
(all cheering and applauding) - I now invite everyone to join in singing the first stanza of the "Alma Mater."
"MSU Shadows."
Anna Jesko will lead us in the singing.
Following the singing, we ask guests to remain seated until the recessional of the platform party, faculty and students.
Thank you.
