Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorship[exciting music] - [Narrator] Born in Durham in 1984, Duffer brothers, Matt and Ross took the television industry by storm in 2016 after the premiere of their hit Netflix series, "Stranger Things".
The self-proclaimed film nerds first dreamed of making movies after watching Tim Burton's "Batman".
By third grade, they'd talked their parents into giving them a Hi8 camera.
After Jordan High, they headed to California and film school.
It took eight years in the industry and many odd jobs before Matt and Ross finally released their first feature.
It went straight to video.
By then, they had set their sights on pitching a passion project, a small supernatural TV show called, "Stranger Things".
After being rejected by more than 15 major Hollywood networks, Netflix finally said yes.
The show has won numerous awards and been a global success with viewers in over 190 countries.
Although "Stranger Things" is set in a fictional Indiana town, Matt and Ross made sure to pay homage to their Durham roots through street names and bodies of water.
In 2019, Matt and Ross signed a nine figure deal with Netflix.
So we'll be seeing a lot more from these North Carolina natives.
Their advice to writers, follow your heart, listen to yourself and write what you're passionate about.
