Crystal: I would love to know how difficult .. Modlaire: very complicated.
When I came, I did not speak English.
That is very important for a job.
In October and November, I got my work permit.
After a month, I got a job.
I am working now.
Crystal: one thing that it seems like we hear.. Sarah: we are seeing so many reports of peopl.. And a lot of reports of an economic crisis.
But we have so many new arrivals mean here.
Getting them to work is a huge part of that.
The problem that really exists is getting peo..
I worked with some employers.
Since talking to new arrivals.
If people do not have the right level of Eng.. And they will interview them again.
They want to see people who are willing to s..
They really do need employees.
Crystal: we talked about the high cost of liv.. We actually pulled out a statistic here.
That is according to an advisor.
Moving usually cost multiple months rent.
This is a significant barrier.
Sarah: I can imagine.
You have very little savings.
You have a job but it might not pay very muc..
Since this might be a form of subsidized hou..
Crystal: I imagine your nonprofit is helping.. Jeff: that's right.
We want to help 400 families exit the shelter.. We are looking for apartments every day.
We are looking beyond Boston.
Trying to find places.
That puts you out of range.
We tell people you will have to work about 6.. That is what you will need to make it in thi..
Crystal: that is a daunting task.
Was this what the American dream look like fo.. Modlaire: yes.
I am very happy.
They will help my family.
Now I walked in and I am very happy.
I can look for more opportunities.
In the future.
Jeff: I know you and your family a little bit.
He did not know much English when he came here.
But he goes to the library almost every day.
He traveled a few months from chile up to th.. That takes a lot of courage and guts to do t..
He got himself to Massachusetts.
He wants to date in the state.
They are the future of our state.
People need to come in.
They are the future of this date.
They wanted to the work boards and they hear.
Folks like him are my hero.
To help them have a better life here and Mas..
Crystal: there is a segment of the population.. What do you speak to them about what is happ.. People say they are a drain on resources.
Jeff: one in six residents of our state's im.. That's about 17%.
Immigrants pay taxes.
And we are losing population.
We need people to come to our state.
They are coming here for a crisis.
These folks are needed in our state.
We need folks to come and stay.
We need to welcome them.
It will make our state better.
Crystal: in your reporting and talking to var.. We know that is happening.
Is there an overarching concern about what h.. when the state decides the money has run out?
Sarah: I'm not sure about a sunset date spec..
I know the legislature is debating an commit.. A couple of different versions have been appr..
I know there is a discussion about it.
Many people need to show that they are looki..
There may be a cap on how long they can stand.. That will be an interesting hurdle to see pl..

I don't think people really want to do that.
I have met with many people.
They want them treated well.
You have to take steps to get a job.
I hope people are not evicted.
I am hopeful.

That is who she is associated with.

It was a reference to the elders.
And then June is a reference to the young pe.. We are not 100% sure which is right.
In that way of thinking, you are correct.

I was devastated.

The kitchen always smelled like homemade goo.. Music was always playing in the background.
Someone was always coming over.
The door was literally always open.
This was my happy place.
My stomach turned and churned.
I thought this was totally my fault.

I did not know what refinancing meant.

My parents had a plan.

My parents started to argue all the time.
My world was upside down.
I was 25 and I have the job of my dreams.
I was a dance teacher in a dance company.

My parents were hopeful.

This was getting old really fast.
The stress caused my parents to split.
My loving relatives put our belongings on th..

I was told I only made enough.
I cannot have a condo.
She told me to save and I did just that.
I came back to her and gave her my updated s.. She said, where did you get this money from?
I said I saved it just like you told me to.
She told me, you can always come to me.
Before you sign anything.
Have me look at it and I will look over you.
My fiancé and I closed on a three family and.. We moved Mom into the first floor.
And then dad later joined us.
I am now the proud owner of my future dream h.. And three multi families.
I am teaching my children generational wealth.
We are planting a seed one seed at a time.
