But today, U.S.
Senator Mitch McConnell endorsed former President Donald Trump for the presidency.
The day after Trump won most of the Super Tuesday primary states.
In a statement, Senator McConnell said, quote, It is abundantly clear that former President Trump has earned the requisite support of Republican voters to be our nominee for president of the United States.
It should come as no surprise that as nominee he will have my support.
End quote.
Trump and McConnell have had a rocky relationship, though, and McConnell blamed Trump for the January six, 2021 attack on the U.S. Capitol.
There's no question, knowing that President Trump is practically and morally responsible for provoking the events of the day, no question about the people who stormed this building believed they were acting on the wishes and instructions of their president, and having that belief was a foreseeable consequence of the growing crescendo of false statements, conspiracy theories and reckless hyperbole, which the defeated president kept shouting into the largest megaphone on planet Earth.
Despite that criticism, Senator McConnell voted against impeaching President Trump.
