Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorshipwell the jury in the corruption trial of us Senator Bob Menendez has been deliberating since Friday afternoon weighing the mountains of evidence provided by the prosecution against the narratives of Innocence offered by the defense teams they have to reach a unanimous decision on the 18 charges levied against Menendez and his two codefendants Fred Davies and will Hana and their speculation that the longer they deliberate the less likely we are to see a guilty verdict of course that's all speculation considering just how much this jury has to sore through after nine weeks of testimony and on the scene through it all is our senior correspondent Brenda Flanigan who has some updates for us on today's jury deliberations Brenda we know the jury sent a few notes to the judge today what can you tell us about it hey Joanna yes the jury has sent the judge four notes so far two of the requests were pretty simple they just wanted a computer cable and they wanted to take what they called a fresh air break on the eighth floor Terrace and the judge said sure but then the questions got a little more complicated at 11:00 this morning they sent a question does uh not guilty verdict on a simple count uh single count rather require unanimity and judge Sydney Stein answered them your vote whether guilty or not guilty must be unanimous as to each count and each defendant then at 2:00 they sent another note they asked for clarification on counts 11 and 12 now those are bribery counts and they involve Senator Menendez and his codefendant Fred Davies jurors wanted to know could that include the senator intervening in the New Jersey Federal prosecution case against Davies and the judge explained yes it could and then he gave the jury additional directions now Joanna we don't know if this jury is going through the verdict sheet count by count but those were counts 11 and 12 out of 18 so that could be an indication that they're getting close we really don't know but Brenda do you know if they've asked actually asked to review any of the evidence yet well they haven't but the judge has said that he is open to bringing in anything that they want he told them he'd even bring the gold bars and bags of cash back into the uh uh the courtroom that was initially viewed by them in the opening arguments from the prosecution he said he'd bring it back if they wanted to see it also they can choose to hear any the testimony read back the judge just asked please be specific as you pointed out we've been doing this for nine weeks some of that testimony is very very long Joanna so Brenda what happens if Senator Mendez is found guilty Joanna if he's found guilty he faces 20 years and he's 70 years old now it's a safe bet he's going to appeal defense has been objecting throughout the trial to set the stage for an appeal but the Constitution says that a convicted f can run for reelection he can serve out the rest of his Senate term the only caveat is if his Senate colleagues decide to expel him but Joanna that would take a two-thirds majority vote wow pretty jarring to think of a convicted uh US senator Bob mandez continuing to serve but senior correspondent Brenda Flanagan great insight as always thank you thank you
