Born in Barnstable, Massachusetts.
Mercy Otis Warren staunchly opposed British policies and officials in the form of poetic prose and satire.
Women getting involved in formal education and politics was rare during the American Revolution.
But as a young girl, Warren's family allowed her to sit in on her brother's lessons, where she developed a love for history and government.
Later, as an adult and encouraged by a family friend, John Adams, Mercy wrote "The Adulateur," "The Defeat," "The Group," and "The Blockheads."
These four essays were bold attacks on well-known figures who supported the Crown.
A gifted writer, she was only the third American woman to publish a book.
Anne Bradstreet and Phillis Wheatley came before her.
Mercy Otis Warren continued to write until her death at the age of 86.
