Metz from Toronto, ON
As frenetic as METZ’ taut, propulsive noise rock has been over their career, their sound has always constantly evolved and grown in its scope and layers. Their most recent album, Up on Gravity Hill, breaks new ground for the band musically and lyrically, zeroing in on human connection. METZ recently announced their indefinite hiatus, and we’re so pleased we’re able to preserve this excellent show.

So, a lot of the songs started to take new shapes.
We were experimenting with just different song structures, but also different sounds.
And then, from that, you know, creating these different vibes.
Of course, for me, I do the lyrics after the basis of the song is there.
I definitely kind of loved the fact that we could have these songs go to different places, emotionally and lyrically, and then, you know, for the whole album to have, like you mentioned, a just a different feel than anything we've ever done before.

You are fundamentally changed.
Definitely, I think you can maybe hear that in some of these songs.
I know that specifically the song "99" came from this idea of looking through my son's eyes about the world around and me noticing, and him asking me, you know, about all these billboards and all the ads on the bus stops and on the street cars when we walked to school.
He kind of, you know, was the one who pointed it out.

There'll be different sources.
I think three or four have been Alex's dad's photography that we've used.
I'll sort of audition layouts and stuff like that between the three of us once we have an idea or a direction where we think we're going, but the final decision and sort of all that, the final layout and mock-up and stuff, that's all a very collective thing.
I just sort of push the buttons to, you know, sort of harness our collective vision for it all.

He refuses.
