Following the Civil War, Julia B. Nelson taught former enslaved African-Americans in Freedman schools in the South.
Julia had become known for her speeches and writing about freedom and democracy, as she fought for women's right to vote.
Even American icons Frederick Douglas and Susan B. Anthony were among the many who admired Minnesota pioneer Julia B. Nelson.
