Dezy: I'm Dezy Doll, and I play guitar and I sing in Miracle Dolls.
Dani: We are Hidatsa from the Fort Berthold Reservation up in North Dakota.
Also, we are Kiowa from Oklahoma.
"California" is about- really, it's about the community.
Like, how women have to put up with getting abused, battered, whipping Native America, and it's hard for them to leave those situations.
This is something that we see on the reservations, and they don't have to stay in that.
That's what this song is about.
It's about empowerment.
Like, she's leaving that whole situation.
And, it's about my cousin.
She left that situation and it was awesome to see her walk away from something like that, 'cause it's dangerous.
You know, a lot of women could end up getting killed that way, and they don't have to.

A misfit song.
I wanted it to sound kind of like a misfit song.
That's where the melody was inspired from.
Dani: Then, I wrote the bass line.
I love Flea's...like, how he moves all around the frets for the melodies.
I kind of got his idea.
Love his stuff.
Even though it's really simple, it's really effective.

We wrote- Dezy: "Water is Life".
(laughs) What was it?
6 months?
Dani: No!
It was 3 months!
(laughs) Felt like- Dezy: Took forever.
Dani: No.
We really spent, like, I think a month.
We really actually got to go to Standing Rock and we'd seen everybody at the camps.
That just inspired us so much that we went and wrote the song "Water is Life".
And, we'd just seen how the passion that they have for the Earth.
No one's fighting for her right now.
It's so important 'cause our kids' kids are going to be the ones paying for it.
And our people started a really, really cool movement, you know?
Water is life.
And, you know, greed is one thing but life means everything especially for our kids and future generation.
And, our Earth?
She needs all of us to pitch in to protect her.

♪ ♪ Dezy: "Kiss me Auras" was inspired by a Cure song.
That little melody that goes descending?
I had a dream.
I heard the Cure song and I heard our vocals going, and it kind of sounded like- we're really inspired by the Action Design, Agent M. And, it kind of sounded like those vocals, with the distortion vocal.
So, that's what we did in recording.
We had a little bit of distortion in the vocals.
Dani: We did the chorus.
We got out the keyboard, and we messed around on it.
It sounded really cool.
Playing the keyboards, we usually just use the guitars.
But for that particular song, we broke out the keyboards.

We did a lot of the marches in Los Angeles for 'Water is Life', 'No DaPL'.
And, this is a song that we used to sing at the marches and it means so much to us.
Standing up for what you believe in no matter what it is, especially in this society that's so disposable, with everything.
I remember singing it at one of the girls marches, and it was so cool.
Like, you know, connecting with the audience with that song.
Dezy: The empowerment song.
Dani: Empowerment behind it.
Dezy: We could really relate to.
Dani: Yeah, we love the empowerment stuff.

Dani: Like, what I'm thinking of?
Dezy: It's the same thing.
She's got some gusto to her.
Dani: I like to think this cover song, that it's- I like to sing to our government 'cause I hate our government.
I don't like what they've done.
Like, there's so much that has to be changed.
Like, how do you-?
Dezy: And, we could change it.
Dani: We could change it, you know?
And, that's what that means to me.
It's just going through all the reservations, 'cause we have this guitar program, me and Dez.
And, just bring healing.
That's what it means to me!
Dezy: The healers.
You know, it's up to us.
The people in the community to actually go out and heal the community.
It's not gonna be done by the government or anyone else.
It has to be- it's gotta be us.
Dani: You know, the government is kind of- it's really twisted.
Dezy: They just make up rules.
Dani: They make sure- yeah.
The rules are always broken.
The treaties are always broken.
We all have to stand up for ourselves 'cause in the end, we are just one tribe.
We're all one race.
We're the human race.
We gotta protect ourselves.
