IT IS KIND OF LIKE LISTENING COA COLE PORTER SONG AND THERE'S INNUENDOS AND LAYERS AND TEXTURES.
I STARTED OUT AS A PHOTOGRAPHER.
WHEN I WENT OFF TO COLLEGE, ONE OF MY TEACHERS ABBY ROBINSON.
I TOOK A CLASS WITH HER AND IT JUST STUCK IN MY HEAD.
ONCE I FIGURED OUT, OH, I CAN USE COLLAGE AND I CAN DO THESE BIG ELEGANT PIECES OF FLOWERS AND YOU KNOW, AND I CAN JUST MAKE THEM MAGNIFICENT AND GLORIOUS AND DRIPPING WITH LACQUER AND GLITTER AND WHATEVER ELSE.
I REALIZE THAT WAS THE WAY TO GO.
THAT WAS THE BUSINESS ASPECT OF IT.
AND THEN I REALIZED THAT THE POLITICAL STUFF THAT I REALLY WANTED TO CREATE WASN'T GOING TO SELL.
YOU KNOW.
IT WOULD BE GREAT IN A MUSEUM WALL.
BUT IT IS NOT GOING TO MAKE ME A LIVING.
YOU KNOW?
IT IS NOT GOING TO MAKE THE AVERAGE ARTIST A LIVING.
SO I HAVE BEEN WORKING A LOT IN COLLAGE WHO HAS WORKED OUT WELL FOR ME AND HAS BEEN SELLING.
NOW I'M TO THE POSITION AND THE POINT WHERE I WANT TO USE PHOTOGRAPHY AND SORT OF CREATE MY OWN COLLAGE WITHIN THE PHOTOGRAPHY.
I CAN WORK WITH THE BIG CANVASS AND HIGHLIGHT WHAT I WANT TO HIGHLIGHT.
AND I SORT OF HAVE THOSE COLE PORTER MOMENTS.
I KNEW WHAT I WANTED TO DO WHEN I WENT TO CUBA.
I WAS ON A MISSION.
I TOOK A CAMERA, 100 ROLLS OF 120 FILM AND I JUST SHOT EVERYTHING.
WHAT INSPIRED ME, THE PEOPLE, THE BUILDING, THEIR LACK OF, THEIR RESOURCEFULNESS WITH NOTHING COMING FROM A THIRD WORLD COUNTRY AND SEEING THAT AGAIN, UNDERSTANDING WHEN YOU ARE OLDER, WHEN YOU ARE 50.
IT'S A WHOLE DIFFERENT BALL GAME.
IT'S A WHOLE DIFFERENT, YOU'RE LIKE WHOA.
WAS I READY FOR THAT?
YES AND NO.
AND SO, WHAT I WANTED TO DO WAS I WANTED TO TAKE IMAGES FROM THEIR MUSEUM AND REWORK THEM THE WAY I REWORK HEADS OF STATE.
WHICH IS LIKE THAT.
I WANTED TO SAY MY, I GUESS MY STORY WITH THAT IS WHAT IF.
IT WAS THE OTHER SIDE?

THERE WERE BEAUTIFUL BLACK WOMEN WITH CORN ROWS.
AND BRINGING POP CULTURE.
BRINGING POLITICS IN A DIFFERENT WAY.
THE IMAGES FOR CUBA PAST AND PERFECT, I REALLY WANTED TO TALK ABOUT WEALTH AGAIN.
POWER.
WHO HAS IT AND WHO DOESN'T HAVE IT.
WHO WANTS IT, AND WHO DOESN'T GET IT.
HOW DO YOU HOLD IT.
MONEY, CLASS, JUST ALL THE THINGS WHERE SOCIETY, WE ARE CONSTANTLY DEALING WITH.
YOU CAN SEE THE CRYSTALS, YOU CAN SEE THE LAYERS.
A LOT OF CUT PASTE AND GLUE.
THERE'S A LOT OF STUFF.
SOURCING CRYSTALS AROUND A NECK PIECE.

AND I TRIED TO THINK OF RESOURCES THAT WERE TAKEN FROM THE COLONIES.
SO THE STONES REPRESENT DIAMONDS.
THE GOLD REPRESENTS GOLD.

A RECENT VISIT TO CUBA LED TO A COLLABORATION WITH CERAMACISIT AND ILLUSTRATOR MANUEL HERNANDEZ VALDEZ.
ALTHOUGH THEY DON'T SPEAK THE SAME LANGUAGE, HOLLY AND MANUEL FOUND COMMONALITY IN THEIR LOVE OF STORY TELLING AND HOW THEY INCORPORATE IT INTO THEIR ARTWORK.

PEOPLE SAY CLAY HAS A MEMORY.
IT REMEMBERS HOW YOU TREAT IT OR THE INDENTS YOU PUT INTO IT WILL COME BACK THROUGH A KILN.
IT IS ALSO THE MOST COMMUNITY ORIENTED ART THAT I ARE DONE SO FAR.
PAINTING AND DRAWING, I CAN DO ANYWHERE.
I CAN DO IT BY MYSELF.
CLAY REALLY NEEDS A GROUP OF PEOPLE IF YOU ARE FIRING KILNS TOGETHER OR JUST CONSTANT FEEDBACK IN LIFTING BIG 50- POUND BAGS OF MATERIAL.
I AM A MULTIMEDIA ARTIST WORKING MOSTLY IN CLAY AND ILLUSTRATED INSTALLATIONS.
CURRENTLY A RESIDENT ARTIST AT QUEEN CITY CLAY IN CINCINNATI AND GOING TO GRADUATE SCHOOL FOR CERAMICS.
I STARTED OUT IN PAINTING AND DRAWING DOING A LOT OF ILLUSTRATIV INK WORK.
I HAVE ALWAYS BEEN DRAWN TO BUILDINGS, CLEAN LINES.
WHEN I WENT TO UNIVERSITY FOR A BACHELOR IN STUDIO ART, I TOOK AN INTRO TO WHEEL CLASS AND I LIKED THE TACTILE NATURE OF IT AND HOW MESSY IT WAS.
I WAS DRAWN TO DOING BASES OR THINGS THAT CONTAIN SOMETHING.
MAYBE STORY.
I PUSHED ME TO WANT TO GO BIGGER AND BIGGER.
A LARGER STORY I COULD START TO PLAY WITH AND MESS WITH.
JUST DRAWING ONE IMAGE ON A SMALLER SURFACE SO I STARTED THINKING ABOUT PARTS OF THE CANVAS AND HOW MUCH SURFACE I CAN GET OUT OF THEM.
GROWING UP, I WAS HOME SCHOOLED SO MY MOM READ TO US A LOT AS KIDS.
AND MY DAD IS A WRITER AND I HAVE PARENTS WHO ARE EDITORS AND ENGLISH TEACHERS SO LANGUAGE WAS REALLY IMPORTANT TO US.
AND FOLKLORE AND STORIES GROWING UP.
A LOT OF MY EARLY WORK WAS BASED AROUND THAT.
AND FAIRY TALES AND THE ACT OF STORY TELLING IN FRONT OF THOSE STORIES THAT WE TELL OURSELVES OVER AND OVER AGAIN.
AND THE THINGS WE HOLD ONTO.
PART OF THE REASON I'M INTERESTED IN STORY TELLING AND STARTED TO DO IT ON VESSELS, YOU ARE WORKING IN THE ROUND.
WHEN YOU PUT A NARRATIVE ON THE POT, THERE IS NO CLEAR BEGINNING OR END.
THERE IS A CYCLE AND YOU CAN CHOOSE WHEN IT STARTS AND FINISHES.
AND WHAT YOU FOCUS ON.
CLAY HAS A FRAGILE BUT PERMANENT NATURE THAT VIEWS INTO HOW WE VIEW STORIES AND HOW THEY TRANSLATE OVER TIME, TOO.
SO COMBINING MY INTERESTS IN ILLUSTRATION AND CERAMICS IS TYING INTO THAT NARRATIVE.
THE TRADITION OF CERAMICS BUT THINGS THAT ARE PERSONAL TO ME.
I HAVE GONE FROM POTS TO MORE INSTALLATION WORK.
I HAVE BEEN DOING.
THE ARCHITECTURE ON QUEEN CITY CLAY.
2200 POUNDS OF CLAY.
THAT'S A LOT OF SURFACE.
AND I'M DOING A WALL RIGHT NOW FOR QUEEN CITY CLAY.
THAT IS SPECIFICALLY MINE.
AND IT IS FOR THE QUEEN CITY CLAY COMMUNITY AND TILES ABOUT THEIR HISTORY AND STORIES SO IT IS NINE BY 12 FEET OF FULLY ILLUSTRATED TILE WORK AND COLUMNS.
PORCELAIN IS MY FAVORITE CLAY TO USE.
I STARTED USING IT IN MY SENIOR YEAR OF COLLEGE.
AGAINST THE ADVICE OF SEVERAL PEOPLE WHO SAID YOU NEED MORE PRACTICE THROWING BEFORE YOU USE PORCELAIN BUT I ALSO GOT A LOT OF ENCOURAGEMENT FROM PEOPLE WHO I KNEW WANTED TO TRY IT.
I'M LOOKING FOR THAT KIND OF MONOCHROMATIC BLACK AND WHITE.
I LIKE THE NATURAL BACKGROUND OF PORCELAIN RATHER THAN PAINTING ALL MY POTS WHITE TO START OR ANYTHING LIKE THAT.
LAST SUMMER, 2023, I WAS NOMINATED TO BE ONE OF OHIO'S EMERGING ARTISTS VIA THE OHIO CRAFT MUSEUM IN COLUMBUS.
AND THEN SOMEHOW, THROUGH THAT, DONNA COLLINS FOUND THE OHIO ARTS COUNCIL.
PUT ME FORWARD AND GAVE MY NAME TO MICHAEL REESE WHO WAS RUNNING THIS TRIP TO CUBA.
I DIDN'T KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT IT BEFORE THIS TRIP.
THERE WERE MAYBE 12 TO 15 ARTISTS FROM DIFFERENT MEDIUMS.
I WAS THE ONLY CERAMIC ARTIST.
I GOT TO MEET WITH THE DIRECTOR OF THE CERAMICS MUSEUM OF HAVANA WHERE MY WORK WILL BE WHEN THE FINAL THINGS GO THROUGH.
WE ALSO WENT TO MATONZA'S.
A LITTLE DRIVE EAST OF HAVANA.
WHERE MANUEL HERNANDEZ HAS A GALLERY OUT THERE.
HE IS IN HIS 90s BUT HE IS A CUBAN CERAMICIST.
I KNEW NOTHING ABOUT CUBAN ART PRIOR.
I DIDN'T EVEN KNOW HIS LAST NAME.
I COULDN'T FIND ANY INFORMATION ABOUT HIM OR WHAT HIS ART LOOKED LIKE.
I JUST KNEW I WAS GOING TO MEET THIS FAMOUS CUBAN CERAMICIST AND HAVE THE EXPERIENCE OF A DIFFERENT CULTURE.
HE DOES MORE ILLUSTRATIVE CARICATURE.
YOU CAN SEE THE INFLUENCE OF IT IN HIS WORK.
THAT WAS EXCITING TO ME BECAUSE I LIKE THE LITTLE BIT OF WHIMSY COMING IN.
AND SO I INTRODUCED MYSELF TO HIM.
IN BAD SPANISH.
AND SOMEBODY ELSE HELPED TO FACILITATE A LITTLE BIT.
WE HAD JUST BEEN TALKING ABOUT DOING VASES AND A COUPLE OF VESSELS TO PUT IN THE MUSEUM.
AND HE GOT EXCITED AND HE TOOK ME OUT TO SEE THESE MURALS THAT ARE TILE MURALS.
THERE ARE SEVERAL SPANNED ACROSS THE STREET.
WE ARE TRYING TO TRANSLATE FOR EACH OTHER AND HE EXPRESSED INTEREST IN DOING ONE OF THOSE TOGETHER.
THAT IS HOW IT GOT STARTED.
WE WILL BE DOING POTS FOR THE MUSEUM.
IT IS SOMETHING WE BOTH LOVE, THE TILE WORK.
I'M MAKING POTS NOW THAT MICHAEL WILL TAKE DOWN TO CUBA WITH HIM ON HIS NEXT TRIP.
AND MANUEL WILL FINISH HIM.
HE IS WORKING ON 36 TILES THAT HE WILL PAINT INITIALLY AND I WILL FINISH THOSE ONCE THEY COME BACK HERE.
WE REALLY ARE BOTH INTERESTED IN IDEAS OF HOME AND THE PLACES WHERE PEOPLE LIVE AND THAT KIND OF TRADITION.
AND THINGS THAT ARE IMPORTANT TO US.
AND JUST THE THINGS THAT PEOPLE HOLD OFF TO NO MATTER WHERE THEY ARE.
THE BIGGEST THING, ESPECIALLY AS SOMEBODY WORKING IN CLAY, BUT ANY TYPE OF ART IS YOU DON'T WANT TO BE LIMITED TO ANY ONE THING OR IDEA.
I THINK IT IS WHY I WAS SO DRAWN TO BEING A MULTI DISCIPLINARY ARTIST AND CLAY.
YOU START LEARNING SO MUCH FROM EACH MEDIUM AND HOW THEY CAN INTERACT WITH ANOTHER AND IT JUST FEEDS ITSELF AND IT FEEDS YOUR OWN WORK AND JUST KEEPS GROWING AND GROWING AS YOU FIND OUT HOW MUCH THERE IS THAT YOU DON'T KNOW.
AND SO IT IS THAT SAME THING GOING IN AND INTERACTING WITH OTHER ARTISTS AN OTHER CULTURES AS YOU ARE REMINDED OF HOW MUCH THERE IS TO LEARN AND HOW MUCH YOU DON'T KNOW AND HOW WE ALL HAVE SO MANY DIFFERENT EXPERIENCES BECAUSE OF WHERE WE COME FROM.
BUT IT IS ALSO FUN TO FIND THOSE ONES THAT ARE THE SAME.
LIKE MANUEL AND I.
HE IS FROM CUBA AND I'M FROM OHIO AND WE HAVE SIMILAR PRIORITIES IN FAMILY AND HOME AND WE WERE ABLE TO BOND OVER THAT.
CUBA HAS REALLY OPENED ME UP TO HOW MUCH I LOVE COLLABORATION.
WHETHER IT IS WORKING ON COMMUNITY PROJECTS OR JUST WORKING WITH ANOTHER ARTIST TO OPEN THAT UP A LITTLE BIT.
BECAUSE YOU CAN HAVE CERTAIN DECISIONS THAT ARE JUST YOURS AND THEIRS AND SHARED.
AND THE BIGGEST ADVICE IS TO FIND SOME CONNECTIONS.
EVEN JUST LOCALLY.
EVEN NOT CERAMICS BUT ANY ART.
YOU CAN'T DO IT ALONE.
YOU NEED A SUPPORT SYSTEM OR PEOPLE WHO WILL PUSH YOU A LITTLE BIT.
NOBODY WILL CARE ABOUT YOUR ART AS MUCH AS YOU DO, BUT IT IS HELPFUL TO FIND PEOPLE WHO FOLLOW YOUR WORK OR ENCOURAGE YOU OR CONNECT YOU WITH PEOPLE THEY THINK MIGHT BE INTERESTED IN YOU AND VICE VERSA.
