I HAVE FOUR CHILDREN.

THE STEP-UP PROGRAM HAS BEEN SO SUCCESSFUL ALL OF THESE YEARS BECAUSE IT'S COMPREHENSIVE.
IT'S BROKEN DOWN INTO THREE COMPONENTS.
THE FIRST IS THE PHYSICAL CONDITIONING COMPONENT, WHICH ENABLES EACH WOMAN TO DEVELOP HER PHYSICAL STRENGTH AND ENDURANCE.
>> RIGHT THERE, STRETCH OUT.
>> THE SECOND PART OF EACH DAY IS A CLASS CALLED WOMEN'S RESOURCES, WHERE WE REALLY FOCUS ON SURVIVAL SKILLS, AND JOB READINESS SKILLS.
>> SO HOW MANY OF YOU HAVE EVER WRITTEN A RESUME?
>> 11 YEARS AGO.
>> THEN THE THIRD PART OF THE DAY IS A THREE-HOUR HANDS ON TRADES TRAINING CLASS, WHICH GIVES ALL THE PARTICIPANTS THE CHANCE TO EXPERIENCE USING HAND AND POWER TOOLS AND LEARNING SPECIFIC SKILLS IN THREE DIFFERENT TRADE AREAS.

THE SECOND REASON WE INCLUDE IT IN THE PROGRAM BY INCREASING THEIR LEVEL OF PHYSICAL ACTIVITY AND INCREASING THEIR STRENGTH AND ENDURANCE THEY ALSO GAIN A HIGHER LEVEL OF SELF-ESTEEM AND THEY END UP FEELING BETTER ABOUT THEMSELVES.
TO BE ABLE TO GO OUT AND FEEL CONFIDENT THAT YOU CAN ACTUALLY ACCOMPLISH SOMETHING WITH YOURSELF AND YOU CAN BE PROUD AND PRESENT IN WHO YOU ARE, IN ANY KIND OF A JOB, IT'S A VERY IMPORTANT FOUNDATION IN THAT, AND IT JUST GIVES THE BASIC STRENGTH NECESSARY TO DO WHAT WE ARE DOING.
YOU FEEL LIKE YOU CAN TRULY PARTICIPATE IN LIFTING THOSE BEAMS AND SWINGING HAMMERS AND WHIPPING SHEET METAL AROUND.
>> DURING THE WOMEN'S RESOURCES CLASS THE WOMEN DISCUSS THEIR OBSTACLES AND CHART A COURSE FOR SUCCESSFUL EMPLOYMENT.
>> WE ARE GOING TO BEGIN A CLASS TODAY TO HELP YOU START DEFINING YOUR PERSONAL SKILLS AND STRENGTHS.
AND WE BELIEVE THAT YOU ALL HAVE A LOT OF SKILLS AND STRENGTHS THAT WILL MAKE YOU REALLY VALUABLE AS EMPLOYEES.

BASICALLY WHAT WE ARE DOING IS WORKING MIG WELDING.
THAT'S A GOOD PLACE TO START, TO LEARN, FOR FOUR WEEKS.
WE DO THAT THREE HOURS A NIGHT THREE DAYS A WEEK.
THESE WOMEN ARE LEARNING MIG WELDING SO THEY CAN GO OUT TO A JOB SITE AS A BEGINNING WELDER AND I FEEL CONFIDENT THAT THEY COULD BE QUALITY PEOPLE FOR A COMPANY TO HIRE.
STEREOTYPICALLY THEY ARE NOT THOUGHT OF TO BE ABLE TO DO THAT JOB AND I WOULD LOVE TO SEE WOMEN OUT THERE BECAUSE IT WOULD BE NICE TO WORK IN AN ENVIRONMENT THAT'S NOT JUST ALL MEN.
MEN ARE OKAY, BUT IT WOULD BE NICE TO HAVE SOME WOMEN OUT THERE, TOO.
>> ALL THREE ASPECTS OF THE STEP-UP PROGRAM, THE PHYSICAL CONDITIONING CLASSES, THE WOMEN'S RESOURCE CLASS AND THE SKILL TRADES CLASSES ARE A MANDATORY PART OF THE PROGRAM.
WE KEEP TRACK OF THE ATTENDANCE, WHEN THE WOMEN ARE HERE, AND IT HELPS US TO QUANTIFY THE EXPERIENCE OF BEING IN THE STEP-UP TRAINING.
FOR THE WOMEN THEMSELVES AND ALSO FOR POTENTIAL EMPLOYERS WHO MAY CALL US FOR A REFERENCE.
>> AND THERE ARE MANY POTENTIAL JOB OPPORTUNITIES FOR THESE WOMEN.
>> ANY JOB THAT HAS FEDERAL FUNDING, WHICH IS VERY TRUE IN HIGHWAY CONSTRUCTION, NEEDS TO DIVERSIFY ITS WORKFORCE AND HIRE WOMEN AND MINORITIES, SO WE ARE SERVING A REAL NEED FOR CONTRACTORS WHO ARE DOING THAT KIND OF WORK.

>> THIS KIND OF NONTRADITIONAL JOB TRAINING IS MADE POSSIBLE BY STATE AND FEDERAL FUNDING.

SCHOOL IS SUCH A PLACE.
>> I TAKE MY KIDS TO SCHOOL AND PARK TO GET THEM SOCIALIZED AND TO HAVE FUN WITH OTHER PEOPLE AND TO BE STIMULATED, AND WHEN I THINK ABOUT IT ONE OF MY OTHER KIDS ACTUALLY IS MY DOG.
>> SO WHAT'S A MOTHER TO DO WITH HER NONHUMAN CHILD THESE DAYS?
>> I HAVE THIS BORDER COLLIE THAT NEEDS SO MUCH EXERCISE, IT'S UNBELIEVABLE.
I DIDN'T REALIZE WHEN I GOT HIM AS A PUPPY.
HE IS SEVEN MONTHS OLD.
KNOWING I HAD TO EXERCISE HIM TWO OR THREE TIMES A DAY WAS A FRUSTRATION TO ME.
WHEN I DROVE BY AND SAW DOGGY DAYCARE, I WAS CURIOUS.
>> A COMPREHENSIVE DOG CARE CENTERS GEARED TO THE MODERN REALITIES OF PET OWNERSHIP.
>> I HAVE TWO DOGS AND I COULDN'T FIGURE OUT WHAT TO DO WITH THEM DURING THE DAY.
I WOULD GET HOME, I WOULD BE TIRED AND THEY WOULD WANT TO PLAY OR GO FOR A WALK, AND THERE WAS NOTHING I COULD DO WITH THEM OTHER THAN TAKE CARE OF THEM MYSELF, AND I THOUGHT MAYBE OTHER PEOPLE HAVE THOSE PROBLEMS.
>> NEITHER OF US LIKE HAVING TO LEAVE OUR DOGS FOR LONG DAYS OR BOARD OTHER DOGS.
THE IDEA CAME ABOUT WITH A LOT OF TALKING ABOUT WHAT YOU DO WITH YOUR DOG ALL DAY WHEN YOU ARE GONE FOR 10, 12 HOURS.
>> YOU BELIEVE YOUR DOG HERE, WE WOULD TAKE CARE OF THEM JUST LIKE OUR OWN.
>> SIMBA IS ONE OF THE REGULARS THAT LITERALLY TUGS AT THE LEASH TO BE IN DAYCARE.

>> SEE YOU LATER.
>> THE DOGS USUALLY ARRIVE ABOUT 6:00, 6:30.
>> WE'VE GOT CUSTOMERS THAT ARE REGULAR.

>> THEY HAVE BEEN WITH US ALMOST FROM THE START.
THEY COME FIVE DAYS A WEEK.
WE HAVE OTHER PEOPLE THAT LIKE TO DO IT MAYBE THREE DAYS A WEEK.
OTHER DOGS WILL JUST COME FOR A HALF DAY.
WE TRY TO FIT IT INTO WHATEVER THE OWNER'S SCHEDULE IS.
WE CAN CATCH MOST PEOPLE'S SCHEDULES.
>> LEAVE HER ALONE.
GET THAT.
>> THE BASIS OF EVERYTHING WE DO HERE IS SAFE PLAY FOR THE DOGS.
THEY LOVE TO CHASE BALLS AND PLAY KEEP AWAY.
THEY WILL PLAY TUG WITH THE LARGE TUG TOYS.
>> ALL PLAY AND NO MANNERS MAKES FIDO A DIFFICULT GUEST.
KEEPING A ROOM FULL OF SOCIALLY SENSITIVE ANIMALS SOCIALLY WELL ADJUSTED REQUIRES LOTS OF SPECIALIZED UNDERSTANDING.
>> IT'S USUALLY SCARY FOR THEM THE FIRST TIME THEY ARE HERE.
>> GOOD BOY.
GOOD BOY, BUDDY.
>> THE OTHER DOGS WILL COME UP TO IT AND CHECK IT OUT AND SEE WHETHER OR NOT THEY LIKE IT.
THERE WILL BE A LOT OF BEHAVIOR WHERE DOGS WILL GROWL OR SNAP AT EACH OTHER.
BASICALLY THEY ARE DECIDING IF THE DOG FITS INTO THE PACK AND IT'S VERY NORMAL FOR DOGS TO DO THAT.
>> HERE WE GO, OUTSIDE!

>> THERE IS REALLY NOTHING HERE THAT'S CLOSED TO THE DOGS.
THE WHOLE HOUSE IS DOG-PROOF.
FOR THE MOST PART THE DOGS TELL US WHAT THEY WANT TO DO.
IT'S A NEW CONCEPT FOR THE AREA, BUT NOT NECESSARILY NATIONWIDE.
BY BEING OFF LEASH IN A SAFE ENVIRONMENT, THE DOGS REALLY GET A CHANCE TO LEARN HOW TO PLAY WITH EACH OTHER IF THEY HAVEN'T HAD THAT OPPORTUNITY BEFORE, AND THE IDEA OF YOUR DOG LEARNING HOW TO INTERACT PROPERLY WITH OTHER DOGS REALLY CAN PREVENT PROBLEMS.
IT CAN ALSO HELP A DOG OVERCOME PROBLEMS.
>> AS YOU CAN SEE SHE IS A LITTLE NERVOUS OF NEW SITUATIONS.
>> THAT THE A GIRL.
>> AND THIS INCREASES HER CONFIDENCE ABOUT NEW THINGS.
>> A RESPECTED LOCAL DOG TRAINER, JAMIE.
>> IT WORKS NICELY FOR DOGS WHOSE OWNERS DON'T HAVE THE TIME TO TRAIN, THEY CAN GET THE EXERCISE, GO HOME TIRED.
THEY GOT SOME BEHAVIOR PROBLEMS THAT WERE WORKED ON, NOT GOING ON A LEASH OR NOT GOING IN OUT OF DOORS PROPERLY, BEGGING AT THE TABLE, EVEN WHILE WE HAVE OUR OWN LUNCH.
>> YES, DOGGY DAYCARE PROVIDES A NOON MEAL WITH SERVICE TO SUIT EVEN THE MOST DEMANDING DINER.
NEED TO CLEAN UP, NO PROBLEM.
pBATHS ARE GLADLY PROVIDED IN A REAL BATHROOM.
GUESTS ARE ENCOURAGED TO RECHARGE IN THE CENTER'S QUIET ROOMS.
A CAT NAP, PARDON THE EXPRESSION, CAN BE JUST THE THING WHEN YOU ARE HAVING SO MUCH FUN.
>> WE HAVE A SPECIAL REQUEST TO TREAT SOME DOGS EXTRA SPECIAL SO THEY WILL BE AWAKE AT LEAST AN HOUR WHEN THEY GET HOME.
>> DOGS REALLY DESERVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO PLAY WITH OTHER DOGS, TO ACT LIKE A DOG, AND THAT'S WHAT WEEK PROVIDE, AN OPPORTUNITY TO BE A DOG, TO LET IT DOWN, TO NOT HAVE TO BEHAVE IN A HUMAN SET OF STANDARDS, BUT TO BE ABLE TO JUST BE A DOG AND PLAY AND SOCIALIZE.

THE DOGS LOVE IT.
THE PEOPLE ARE HAPPY WITH IT.
AND IT'S A GREAT JOB.
