- From the Augusta Civic Center, it's the NPA Boys Class C State Championship presented by Ware Butler between the Matthew Mustangs and the Monmouth Academy Mustang.
- And welcome back to the Augusta Civic Center, prince Stevens, along with Coach Ken Lynn LA Battle of the Mustangs for the Boys.
Classy State title it is Mount View and Martin Academy.
And this one I want to lace up the sneakers and buckle up because it could be, it could be wild.
- We have a great matchup tonight.
Mount View plays extreme full court pressure defense, so they're all over the place.
They want force the pace and the mustangs can match it.
They played against a similar kind of team in Mount Abram in the Southern main finals and managed to survive it.
So we got a, we got a good matchup tonight.
- There's that game against Mount Abram where the Monmouth Academy Mustangs captured their first regional title and for the other Mustangs M view, they'll be going for their second gold ball as they won back in 1987.
So we are getting ready to get this one underway.
Mustangs of M View coming in with a 16 in six mark.
They really surprised, I think a lot of people, although those who knew their regular season schedule, not so surprised.
They came into the tournament number seven in the north and ended up just steamrolling all of their - Opponents.
Well, I consider them really kind of a class B team 'cause most of the teams they played were in class B.
So they, they, they toughened by playing a a, a class above during the, during the season.
- Alright, let's hear from the coaches and Jim Baines.
Jim.
- All right, coach.
I know Monmouth is beaming there.
You're in the state championship game.
Great feeling that in and of itself.
- Yes, sir.
I mean we're, we're happy to be here, but I mean we want to, we wanna try to compete as well, you know what I mean?
So we, we've worked really hard this year.
We feel, you know, we know Mo view's a really good opponent.
They represent a very, very tough KVAC school, you know, played a lot of class beat teams on the season.
We watched 'em annihilate the Northern Sea field.
So I mean we're, we're, we're here to play so we want, we want to come out and, and and, and try to not just happen to be here.
We wanna win.
- Alright, very quickly, what's it gonna take?
What was your biggest concerns about Mount View?
- Couple of things.
We have to match their intensity, their physicality.
We have to try to dominate the glass and we have to be able to, to def to defend drill penetration.
Alright, - Good luck to you.
Thank you.
- Thank - You.
Well that will certainly be fun if they do indeed match the intensity that M View brings, especially if Mount View brings to this game what they brought to the North Maine tournament, that - Having fun and Coach Morrow made an important point that they can't be happy just to be here.
That's the first time they've been in a state championship game.
So if you're thinking that okay, we've made it and you're not gonna last very long so they're here to win, like you said, - Certainly you wanna see that, you know, that's where that intensity starts, right?
Right there with the coach.
And then you know, we're not here just to, just because we're happy to be here.
- You have an opportunity, you never know if you'll ever get back here again.
So tonight's the night you get a chance to prove it - Now let's hear from the other side and coach her.
Jim, - I'll tell you Brandon, what a great atmosphere.
What a great thing for the Thorn with the Thorn Dyke area.
Yeah, yeah.
Tell us about your reception the last week after since winning the Regional Sea.
- Oh man, it's been exciting.
The community has just come out in full force.
We're hearing from people from the 87 team again, just it's rekindling a lot of memories and we're hoping to create a new one.
Alright, - Let's talk about scouting the other Mustangs.
What'd you see?
What, what are you concerned about?
- Well, I mean obviously we've got our hands full.
I think this will be the toughest game of the tournament.
We obviously have to contain Sammy Calder, Levi Laver, but their starting five is pretty impressive all around so we've got our hands full.
Alright, - Very good.
Good luck to you.
Alright, thank you.
Okay Brian.
- Alright, thank you very much Jim.
We mentioned Mount View coming in at 16 and six and the Mustangs Monmouth Academy at 18 and three and look at the row to the gold.
- Let's take a look at the Mount View Mustangs again, a season record of 12 and six.
A little deceiving because a lot of those losses were some of the top teams in Class B South.
They averaged 60 points a game.
They're giving up 51, the only number 17 in the, in the north, but they defeated, they kind of swept through northern seed beating Fort 10, Fort Fairfield and callus by over 60 points combined last time they won the gold balls.
1987 for Monmouth.
Excellent record of 15 and three similar in terms of points per game 59 and change tournament rank number three, they defeated Winthrop Dale and then he upended number one Mount Abram by three points in the Southern main final.
No gold balls for them.
This is their first trip to the state championship.
- Alright, - Let's meet the players for this one.
We'll turn things over to PA announcer.

Number three, Stuart Nolton at Guard from Monmouth of five six, sophomore number four, Aiden Olivera at Guard from Mount View five 11, senior number 23, Wyatt Evenson and net guard from Monmouth.
A six one Senior number 11 Semi Calder Mount View is coached by Brandon Heard.
Monmouth is coached by Wade Mor, - Mount View Mustangs will send three seniors and a couple of sophomores out onto the floor to start this one.
And for Martin Academy they've got three seniors, a sophomore and a freshman.
Lee Levi laverde are the freshman out there.
- Yeah, Levi Laverty the second leading score at 13 and a half points a game.
Of course they're, they're led by number 11.
Sammy Calder at 23 and and half points a game.
So he's an outstanding player recognized around the state for Mount View.
We wanna really pay attention to number one Noah Herd.
He has outstanding range and he's just a, he's a force defensively along with number 23, Wyatt Evenson as well.
- Wyatt Bennett and Lucas Harmon will jump it up and the ball is taken away by herd and Noah heard it looked like it was gonna be controlled by Mon Academy.
I gonna say must remember we can't do that - Well yeah, Mount Mount you gets the first 50 50 ball of the night.
- So heard as is off the left side, you working down into the corner, back into the lane shot.
No good way off the by Evenson quickly we'll go the other way with it.
Laver, I'll pull it out, gives it off.
Tora finds Laver top of the lane, no good rebound taken down by Nolton.
- Nice screen that time for Verta.
You had a clean look - Heard, pushes it up.
He'll pull up the jumper off the front of the iron New routine finding success here in first attempt Basket.
He's got a five FO is on WT Bennett it that is his first, first fo of the game.
- Full court man to man pressure they will double team run and jump.
They'll tip, they'll swarm the basketball wherever it goes.
- Cal though brings it up.
As Ken mentioned, he's averaging over 23 points a game and he connects there.
- Tank, he went coast to coast against one of the better defenders around Wyatt Evenson - Now heard in Traffic, the ball is picked up by Kennedy.
Ley up ahead goes to Olive, ver it a back out to Olivea.
Saves it from going down to Browns.
Calder Lean in from way out D and Bound took them down by Milton.
- Mount View wants to speed up the the Mustang up as of Monmouth and the Mustangs obliged that time.
That is Monmouth.
They shot it quick - With the ball looking for their first points of the game.
Diving into the lane off the glass.
No good for Evenson is gonna go against Monmouth Academy - Comes - Evenson throws one up and there's Wyatt Bennett hitting the board.
- Bennett the sophomore on the line to shoot a couple and foul is called against Lucas.
Herman his first.
- Yeah, Harmon had to rotate over to take care of Evenson on the drive and that left Bennett all alone on the offensive blast.
- So the Mustangs from Mount View find their first point of the game coming on the foul line from Wyatt Bennett.
This is the Second Bound comes among academy just underway.
This BO State championship game.
Happy to have you along with us helping out our top.
Lucas Harmon, the corner full jumper called in no good bound Harmon.
The pass intended for Aiden Olivera disconnection there that goes outta bound - Set play that time run for Sammy Calder.
He was immediately triple Dean Baath is gonna know where Calder is.
All night - Is heard for three bang.
- He has outstanding range and he's lefthanded but he can shoot equally as well.
Going to his right, - You saw that there bump you on top.
Now four two pass intended for Kyle Palki - Back to back turnovers right there.
Here goes her.
Give him a little bit of room.
He is gonna let it go.
- Pushing it up.
Evenson gives it over to Dammit.
And follow up is up in - Evenson.
- Evenson connects for his first two points of the game.
- Yeah, he was just flying down the floor that time.
- He's off left side on the way.
- Might Beon - It is the second foul on Lucas Heron.
- There's Evenson with a foot.
Back in the previous play, - Lucas Herman had Abram with 14 to extend your lead shot around in no good by Osborne.
Second I think nothing there and it's gonna be Mon basketball.
- You notice the Mount Hughes possessions don't last all that long.
They're they're, they're forcing the pace.
They push the ball hard, they attack the basket.
They'll take first available shot every time down.
- Kyle Leski with it out.
Me hands it off to Calder, tries to, and nearly still in a way by the Mustangs.
Calder hits laverde are in the corner.
The three no good rebound comes away to Mount View.
Noah Herd with it.
Herd will pull up three from the Point.
- Well you see Noah Herd coming and he's looking down at the floor.
That means he's gonna - Shoot it A little decoy action there from Noah.
Herd puts his team up.
Nine two from the corner, right side, no good rebound Evenson - Actually, if he's looking anywhere, it means he's gonna shoot it.
Pretty much not afraid.
- Evenson pushes it up in the corner, Ben in and just like that, the Mustangs of my view are up by 10, 12 to two with 3 22 to play in the first.
- Well we saw a pretty good illustration of the pace that they want to play at pushing the pace.
There's Noah, you give him a little bit of room, he's going, he's gonna let it fly.
- The great Shaw, as you mentioned, looking down best before he let it fly.
Season seven of high school Push Mane returns March 21st, invite you to tune in to watch schools from around the state.
Match wit saying compete for the $1,000 prize this season.
Schools from Orano to North Berwick will battle it out for the championship again.
March 31st.
That is a Thursday night at eight o'clock on Maine Public television.
- Good time out that time by Wade Mor.
He's gotta get his kids focused.
They have to adjust to the pace because you can't really match this kind of pace and defensive pressure in practice.
So you're counting on your kids to adjust as the game goes on to what Mount View is doing.
- Hey, you play against Mount View.
It's kind of like being locked in a closet with a court because they're, they're everywhere.
- Well the way you can practice against it is to practice against, you know, six or seven guys in practice.
- Monmouth Academy with the ball.
Calder goes in along the baseline and fights in there.
- Those two buckets by Calder - Kick it out, right Ton gets it back.
Now penetration kick it out to Osborne.
- Now they're giving extra attention to Noah herds.
They're singling him up, works - Off the screen - So he's being face started by Laia.
- Evenson gets it on the right wing.
Evenson, who that'll give the ball back to Monmouth Academy.
The have four points coming from Sammy.
- Looks like we have a little bit of half court zone pressure.
2, 2, 1 and a half.
Court - Rodeo.
- They'll trap everywhere, - Kick outta bounds.
Osborne, they get a foot.
It, it'll be bounding along their own baseline for Mon Academy.
Comes into cross court.
Calder jumps it down low and it's up and in.
- Nice play at that time.
Initiated by Sammy Calder, he drove, drew the defense and fish it off to to number 14.
Yeah, him at, he - Was checked into the game and now steel by academy.
They looked to cut further into this Mount View lead Palki.
Was it out on top?
- They don't really seem to be pressuring Leski.
So they, they have a, a pressure release.
Monmouth does if they choose to.
- What a pass from Paul does.
He finds Vera all alone.
- So if they're not gonna guard Polowski, he, he can be their pressure, release their safety valve and just throw it to him to relieve pressure.
- What Good quarter.
Wearing this by Sandy Paul gets the headlines for all the points.
But that was a, that was a great look - Made.
Two great passes in a row - Tie up and it'll be Martin Cavity Ball.
- Here we go.
Look at this over the top.
Evenson had his hands down.
Nice cut by Laver - Bond, MH Academy Olive Har Roses the handle on the, he picks it up and gives it over to Eski.
I called her.
Looks at the three off the - Mark Osborne - Gathers in the past and heard Osborne into the lane.
He's gonna be called for second player control.
Called against the Mustangs of Mount View.
- Mount View has a pretty simple game plan take, get the ball and go to the basket and if they miss a shot, they, they swarm on the the offensive glass as well.
Even though they're not as tall as most teams, they'll out quick here - Under a minute to play here in the first quarter.
12 eighth to score.
I'll be on top.
We've got a whistle and it's gonna be a five - Think un - Or is it against Nolton - Three.
- Stuart Nolton picks up the foul.
His first, he's the fourth foul this quarter against Mount View heading into the lane off the glassy getting it to go.
Was Kyle - By pki.
Take the handoff, drove it to the hoop, - Heard the three hits again.
It's third - Three of the quarter - And then gets it over to Leski now.
Cindy called it.
We got out on top.
- Coach Morrow wants the last shot.
- Bald directing his teammates trying to work off the screen.
Pulls up for the jumper off the back of the iron and A to is deflected that ends the first quarter of play leading.
Run with Academy 1510 step side and be back in the morning.

All these folks making it possible to bring you this classic sea state championship game is Mount View loses the ball after they - Ms. Wyatt - Had inside Wyatt Bennett.
That is had inside rebounding position too.
On that - On academy.
We'll bring the ball up here to work against the defense of Mount View and a fire control foul.
Looks like we have being an Abbott comes out the path, the dribble brother senior drives in, lays it off the glass.
Nothing there gets his own rebound.
Second of it goes - Once they take the shot, your job is just, is half done.
You've gotta get a body on people and make sure you take care of the defensive glass.
- Jacob Harmon is into the game for Coach Wade Moore.
Harmon gets it over to laverde.
Laver will put up the three off the front of the rim.
Quickly.
Up ahead it goes.
Osborne spins, gives it back to herd his three.
No good bound.
Taken down by Calder.
- Rebound by Calder - Calder.
Baseball pass.
Hook up ahead to Harmon.
Jacob Harmon.
Harmon trying to find some room.
Does so and up by Bingham is no good.
Bingham Abbo is now heard.
Pushes it up.
Evenson drives in so off the grass.
No good, but he, he, - Here we go.
There's a handoff to Evenson that's a step plowed by I think Bingham, Abbott, - I believe they called it on Calder.
They did.
So that's the first on Sammy Calder shot his wrist.
Evenson Lucas Harmon comes back into the ball game for Mon Academy, as does Kyle Leski - Play number one coming at you all.
- All three of them calling out play number one and anxious to see what that is.
Kki tries to find Calder but it's knocked away by Mark.
Nice pass from her yoga to Evenson.
- So it starts with the steel and the layup at the other end.
- 20 to 10.
So he called, brings it over to, puts the ball in the flag and put over there.
Evenson.
Evenson bring it up on him is Calder.
Contact Noah Herd drives in nice dish, offload of evenson.
Again, - Very familiar sight if you're, if you're a follower of the Mount View.
Mustangs herd to Evenson and Evenson to herd.
- Nine points for Evenson driving into the lane shot.
No good battle.
Four underneath and wow Honda will go to the shoot too.
- Let's take a look.
Now here's baseline drive pounds passed.
Monmouth did not get backside rotation to take care of the help.
To help the helper situation.
- I was stalled on Ben Osborne.
That is his second on the line.
Shooting is Lucas.
This the first, second one is off the as well and - The way Mount view plays is is going to be a lot of contact.
1 3 1 1 3, 1 half court trapped here.
See how the Mount View Mustangs handle it?
- You get their pockets picked.
Laver races up ahead of the pack, lays it off the glass.
Bat two for the freshman.
- Looks like a freshman.
Doesn't play like a freshman.
- D. Pass down into the is - Diagonal.
Pass over the top of that.
- 1 3, 1 24 - To 12 time out on the floor.
Take a look at it.
- Diagonal pass over the top of that 1, 3 1.
It's a tough cover for that zone.

Mustangs tried to do here.
The state championship game that they did in the North tournament.
A steamroll opponent we're up by 12 here, 24 12 with four minutes and 15 seconds remaining in the first half.
- Well, playing from ahead is is really important, especially when it's a state championship game.
Mount Views made a habit of that here in the last, throughout the postseason - Stop at the center.
Miles View had to win a preliminary game just to get into the tournament.
- They did.
- They needed Ops Valley 57 38 and they were off to the races at that point.
- They're actually behind in that game.
Early - Monmouth Academy chip away.
They get it down low.
The shot rolls around the Remen out by Kyle Leski.
He has fouled who go to the line to shoot a couple.
- Ms. Leski with the back door cut.
Bennett leaves his feet, admits the foul - Line.
Kyle Leski - Leski on the line to shoot his first fall shots of the game.
He does have one field game.
Kki second pass shot is on the mark.
24 14 lead still at 10.
Mountain View Mustang heard around direction nearly out of the hands.
A nice save there by Evenson.
Bennett it on the baseline.
Strong.
- That's just too easy.
Should not be allowed to drive baseline without any kind of resistance.
- Called a tough shot off the rim, going down to the floor.
Hard is Evenson and we've got a foul.
- Let's take a look.
Here's the baseline drive.
There's a blow by right by Harmon.
No rotation to help shut off the power rally - All that foul.
Believe on miles.
- Yeah, he just checked in again.
Yep.
- Sammy called her to find some room underneath.
Three minutes to go mount view with the ball at a 10 point lead over the herd.
Be one of the longest possessions you have without taking a shot.
Trying to draw out the Monmouth Academy Defenders.
Calder comes out onto Evenson, bottled up his nolton.
He'll take it into the paint.
No good walks around.
Bennett it gets the rebound.
Al heard - That's a killer.
You play good defense.
You give up an offensive rebound - And foul first.
So it'll be inbounded along the sideline again holding the ball, waiting for the defenders to come out to get it down to pardon Hardon Vera into Harmon.
Harmon.
Shot is in.
- I turn around, jump shot and get the ball inside successfully.
- Pressfield goal for Lucas Harmon heard with it.
I tried to walk off the screen again.
Now Olive with a pick.
He protects the ball and goes up and his foul - Gonna be unheard.
- Picks up his first shooting.
Two is gonna be olive.
Olive is sophomore.
Second call shot is in for Elevate.
- Now if your mom, if you wanna get a couple of the stops here to end the second quarter, they in the game a little bit.
- Very animated Coach Moore on the sideline, they foul is gonna go against view rebounding action.
We'll walk you down to the other end of the floor.
- 14 - Miles.
- Lucas Harmon.
- Lucas Harmon on the line to shoot.
He's now one Osborne comes back in for Miles Carter up end by Hammer.
26 21.
- Mom wants getting some things done here on the free throw bar.
- Cut the lead to five and a miscommunication there.
Evenson tending to pass for Wyatt Bennett.
Bennett was cutting into the the basket pass right into the corner under a minute to play here in the first half.
Lavera gets it over the cal.
That's all Lavera diagonal pass down to Harmon.
Harmon changes direction and gets it to go.
Harmon.
- Nice job up and under back in the game.
- 26 23 gives over to, it's a short on Al - Big key right here to taking care of the Rebell situation - Under 10 to play in the first half.

We're missing one of our best players.
Dave Hessel him, you know, he just, it was great.
Great working with all of them - Guys.
When you watch basketball now compared to back in the eighties, what's, what are the biggest changes in your opinion?
Anybody can grab this one here.
Well, I'll tell - You what the three point line was, not even in existence when we played.
It came in the next year in 88.
So we played a lot more of a, in the paint style, more of a zone defense.
These guys are they, they shoot from the outside really?
Well.
They're a lot more of a pressing team than I than we were.
But I think we're both a lot of fun to watch.
Alright, - So who would've benefited the most from the three point line?
Which of these, these guys there?
This guy.
All all.
Alright, so are you killing yourself that you didn't get a three point line that year you played?
- It would've been nice for all of us.
There was quite a few people that could shoot that shot, but it's a different game now and I'm just happy for these kids.
This is awesome.
Go green.
- Can you talk about just the basic memories of winning a gold ball on this floor?

Each of these teams coming in here averaging around 60 points per game.
So this is a fairly low scoring affair for these guys.
- Yeah, I'm not surprised Things happen in the state championship game.
Both teams are obviously quality and playing better against better defensive teams than they usually are.
- We've got a foul on Monmouth Academy.
Evenson Foul was on, what is the first on Jacob?
Harry bound pass.
Bennett Calder against Evenson.
And we've got a five.
- Yeah there was a hand check by Evenson - By - An Evenson personal foul on number three.

Jacob Lucas Harmon Calder gives off to all quarter, goes to R coming into the ballgame.
Not - Interested in shooting.
They're not even guard him.
- Ball is loose and a scramble on the floor.
Now coming into the game for Mount View is Miles Carter sitting down as Bennett Ver comes back into the game for the mustangs of sitting down.
He's a sophomore.
Comes into Harmon.
Jacob behind it.
Has it out front to the dribble.
Gets it over to olive oil.

One of the things that Monmouth has done is they've been effective around the glass in an offensive rebound department.
We've also taken care of the ball.
- Ask guns.
Indu Oliver.
Aaron Ky with it.
The dribble tried to leave it in for harmony.
It goes off his hands.
But you were able to get off a shot.
Now picks it - Up.
An easy one - Heard, puts it over to Nolton.
Down underneath Miles is fine.
- Number four, - Nice job.
Carter not able to finish - Fo was on Lucas Harmon.
That is the fourth on Lucas.
Harmon on the line is Miles Carter.
Carter misses the, - I wouldn't say it's classic shooting form for Carter, maybe even knock this one down.
- Junior does not get the - Forced by Evenson constant pressure when Evenson around - Contested that rebound enough so that Calder walked with the ball pass comes way out deep to Noah Herd.
Evenson for three - Doesn't ordinarily do that, but he can.
He's capable.
- 45, 43, 5 16 to play in this one.
- I think we've officially got ourselves a dandy right now.
There he goes.
Not enough pressure lets it fly.
- Continue demonstrating by focusing on driving - Safely.
Plenty of room to spare behind that.
Three point pulls his Mustangs.
2 45.
This has been a good one.
- Sure has.
We gotta give, you know, both teams deserve a lot of credit for the way they've battled.
Mom, this looks like they, they're out of it early then it look like they might start to take control.
But now another surge by Mount View and they get to play defense, which for them is fun.
- Martin Academy with the ball and a two point lead looking for their first state championship in boy's basketball has won back in 1987.
And it's less touched by view.
So ball remains is Monument - Now the deflected pass that time help you gets her hands on a lot of passes.
- Vero Cross pass.
Harmon outta all areas down into the corner.
Harmon spins from the paint.
Nothing there.
Levi taken down by - Harm over the top.
- That's Harmon.
That's number five.
It is.
So Lucas Harmon is out of the game.
- Unfortunately went right over the back.
Osborne had position - Bingham AB comes into the - Game.
We're not in the bonus yet.
- On has committed three two for Mount View works against.
And the, so next one will put - Usually, oh he win the bonus.
Yeah.
Usually play the scouting report on Evenson as he wants to drive it.
The last time they gave him room and he knocked down the three - Evenson.
This off right side pulls up for the jumper.
No good.
Too strong.
Four 20 to play in this fourth quarter of action.
Alaska drives in to go foul line.
Tries to get the pedal.
Does so but called him not able to get off a clean track.
- Blocked by Evenson I believe Noah - Heard with a scoop shot with the left hand, nothing there.
And we've got a file called Against Academy.
- This is the Mount View drive and offensive rebound game.
Here goes no heard going with the left hand.
He's got three people around him that leaves Evenson alone.
Gets pumped by Oliveira.
- Oliveira picks up his second foul.
Evenson makes the shot.
- You might have a redo.
We have a four minute basketball game right now.
- 45.
45 Evenson seventh for eight.
From the line tonight.
This those last two.
Those are big ones.
Harming.
It's now Jacob Harmon.
Lucas Harmon has filed out of this game.
Olivera drives in, finds Bingham, Abbott all away.
- Nice play Orchestrated by Oliveira Bingham.
Abbott with the finish - We've got a file that's gonna go on.
Ra number three on Vera, the sophomore.
- Well he was gonna be in the bonus is the drive and the dish.
- Three - Mamt with a nice finish.
- No hurt on the line for the first time tonight.
Bennett comes back into the game and sitting down is Miles.
Noah heard 15 points.
Looking for number 16 here.
Gets we tied up again.
47.
47 - It up in the corner.
That's a problem.
Deflection - Called her putting the ball into play.
He finds Harmon who Harmon couldn't hang there.
Basketball hands off the herd.
Third works off the screen.
Osborne rolls in and they travel by WT Bennett.
One or two ranches to get to the hoop.
- Nice little play there.
Osborne sets the screen, gets the ball in the short roll, then kicks it out to Bennett.
Although Bennett traveled - Three minutes left in this one and a foul is foul - Number two.
- Third follow on the team, second on Nathan.
And in the paint pass goes into Harmony.
Stripped picked up by Abbot Ball on the floor.
We've got fight for it on the floor and it's gonna be Martin basketball.
- Couple opportunities.
Let's take a look.
There's Abbott had a, had a clean look and then the Scrum ensued.
- B the Ma Ben Osborne babbling it out.
Tie up alternating possession.
Gives the ball to Mount View - And Netto gonna do some house cleaning down there - For Mount View.
We will face some pressure.
Hilton gets it into Evenson.
He gotta back off - That has to be careful not to foul.
We don't want to put him on the pre throw line in the tie game.
They can earn it.
- Even heard.
He'll stop and pop three leaves it short.
7 47 pass to Wayne Calder.
Quick turnaround.
Oh does not get it to go Wyatt.
Ben the rebound.
We a score the last two trips down the floor.
- No time out.
There's that short roll again.
Osborne - Off the glass.
Too strong.
Let's opportunities on both ends of the floor here.
Last few trips.
Wow.
And up ahead it goes to Calgo all along.
- Even some fell down.
- Now heard herd finds Osborne Osborne in amongst traffic.
Comes over to Harmon.
Harmon download Bingham Abbot.
Fatigue - Taking advantage.
One Mustang - 51 47.
- Big possession right here.
Coach Heard not taking the time out.
- Gets it down to Osborne.
Good kick out Mil.
What a time for his first points of the game.
A big three with one 14 to play.
Bringing his team to one.
- So Mount Hughes been going to that look exclusively here in the fourth quarter where Osborne sets the, sets the screen.
But there goes Sammy Calder.
You can see Evenson behind there.
Fell down, got tripped up somehow.
- Stuart Nolton, his sophomore hits that three, his first points of the game.
- I don't know that he shot it to all that much either.
Let's take a look.
Here's Osborne with the Kickout.
That short roll screen, he gets the ball in the lane, then he lane, he can orchestrate from there.
And he did.
- Alton had nine points in the final against mentioned before the six, the four field in Thes and then seventy two eight over.
Call on down with the ball.
Leski Leski, whoops, get rid of it.
Finds Harmon Harmon down along the base line back when comes to PKI under one minute to play a one point ball game.
- That's out for her.
Double - T Kki gets it down low to Abbott and we've a foul called against - Gonna be Osborn I believe.
- Osborn personal file.
- Osborne picks up his third file, - Not in the bonus yet.
That is - The 14th file.
So - They've had problems, - No shooting.
- Yeah, and they've had problems.
Inbounding, the ball - Comes into Harmon right in the lane is shot.
Partially def defected, but no a foul is gonna be called on Wyatt and Bennett, - Let's take a look.
Here's the inbound.
Harmon with a power bounce the deflection by Wyatt.
But he got a piece of the arm too.
- Bennett picks up his third.
On the line to shoot is Jacob Harmon.
He's a freshman and he misses the first one.
- Big spot.
- 45 seconds left in this one.
He makes the second.
It's a two point ball game.
Evenson from Mount Fs.
Evenson goes to work into the paint, kicks it out to Nolton.
Nolton for three, nothing there.
Leaves short pick up ahead comes off.
The right side is lost down bounds.
- Coach Herd wants a time out.
I think he want the, the ball in the hands of either Evenson or Noah Herd for that kind of shot.
- 25.6 seconds left one with Academy leading at by two 50.
Two 50.
Alright coach.
Yeah, what, what are you drawing up?
- Like I said, I think, well they might go back to that screen with the Osborne now.
Now Coach Morrow might come out in a 1 3 1.
He might try to cross up Mount View, but if it's man to man, I look for some kind of screen action.
I we're gonna put Noah Herd coming off the screen by Osborne and we're gonna put Nolton and Evenson in the corners.
- Both teams are in the bonus.
So irony files, it'll be a shooting situation.
A look at some of the fans on their feet, cheering on their teams will bring it up.
The length of the court.
- Little pressure.
I don't think it's a serious kind.
- Here we go.
Trouble getting it in and he bounces it off.
The defendant, Stuart Nolton, sophomore, again, looking to get the ball in.
And he does so Hands of Evenson, Evenson brings it out.
- Just gonna clear out.
Looks like - Evenson gives it off to Noah Heard.
They look up at the clock under 10 seconds to play Evenson off the side of the backboard.
Not sure what that was.
And they reach in.
It's gonna be a foul with 0.7 seconds left.
I dunno if that was an attempted chart.
Lost the handle or a pass.
If - It was a shot.
It wasn't a great one.
I think he was looking for a foul.
Trying to draw a foul.
I thought he was foul.
- The foul was gonna go on Ben Osborne.
We walked down to the other end after his time out, Martin Academy would be on the line to shoot 2.7 seconds left.
- Here we go.
There's Evenson driving to his right.
I think he was trying to draw a shooting foul.
He felt the contact and shot it.
- Now Monmouth with a couple of foul shots, he put this one away with no doubt about it.
On the line to shoot is gonna be Kyle PKI Senior - Two - 13 points in the game.
Four pki.
He had nine in the third quarter.
Still looking for his first points here in the fourth quarter.
And he misses.
- I was gonna say if he makes the first one, he might wanna miss the second one, but - Will be a one possession game regardless.
He misses it in a baseball truck.
Oh, and it's off the mark.
The Academy Mustangs that captured their first state championship in school history.
- Great.
What a great effort.
They hung with it.
They were down early, they just stuck with what got him there.
Coach Morrow was very patient and they were able to overcome all that adversity.
- Team that was down by a dozen points in the first half.
They cut that to one point at the half and they come outta here with a two point win over Mount View.
52 50 - Did a great job.
They took care of the basketball a lot better in the second half.
They rebounded.
They took care of the defensive boards and they got some offensive rebounds as well.
- So the Mustangs in Mount View finish their season at 16 and seven and Mustangs of Monmouth Academy go home with a gold ball.
19 and three, - 13 points 15.
- Some of the excitement on the floor from these Monmouth Academy Mustangs really not decided until the final buzzer sounded.
Ladders are being brought out, put into place and we will have the cutting down of the Nets instructions being given to on one end.
He sandy, he Calder on the other end.
You can see Lucas Harmon up on the ladder making a few cuts going up, is gonna be Brother Jacob Harmon on Academy had not won a regional title no until this year, I think.
Right.
They captured their first regional and now they go home with a gold ball.
- Coach Morrow was prophetic when he said, we can't just be happy to be here.
You know, you gotta come to win.
And they did.
They had to remind themselves of that when they were down by a dozen.
- That's exactly right.
Dexter in the first game here at the Augusta Civic Center.

No they didn't.
They held, they they kept their composure and, and came - Back.
That's what it's, that's what makes them champions.
- So the nets are down and they've made their way over to the bench.

- Everything feels very personal.
- You feel like - You belong here.
Taking a look at the state champs, the Martin Academy Mustangs, some of the scoring.
Sammy Calder had 15 points to lead the way for the Mustangs.
Kyle Leski had 13 points.
Those are the only two to digits.
Ping them, added it.
Did a nice job coming off the bench.
He had two points - So it did - Seven points for Jacob Harmon, four for Lucas Harmon, three for Aiden.
Olivera had a couple of points for Levi, er, who is actually, as a rule, plays a much bigger role on the offensive side of that - Second leading score.
But they did a good job overall taking care of the basketball against the extreme pressure that Mount View provides.
And a lot of times it was Calder who really was instrumental in, in the ball handling department.
Well, they all did.
They all contributed.
- We noted before the first game here, Dexter girls winners over Dale 48 41 on Myth Academy coming out of this one with a 52 50 win.
Now let's turn things over to Jim Page.
Jim, - Very good.
All right guys, thank you very much here.
New champs.
First time in school history here.
Monmouth, Mustangs here.
Lucas, you know that overtime thriller you had, first of all in regionals and now this, what is it about this team that just comes back and comes back and finds a victory?
- I mean, it it, it starts in our practices.
We, we got so much heart.
We're a family at every practice.
You know, we break it down.
We say we're a family and we don't have any negative energy.
We pick each other up.
That's the biggest thing.
That's the biggest thing about having a good team is making a family.
Alright.
- How's that feel there Lucas?
There - It feel, it's great to hold this.
It feels great.
We've worked hard all year.
Each practice it's a battle every day going at one another and we just kept battling and we got down early and then we looked at each other and said, Hey, let's just keep battling.
Let's keep doing our thing.
It'll eventually we'll just keep working hard and control the things we control.
And it fell our way.
What - Lucas mentioned to handling the, the negative energy that you did get down early, you get down big time actually there.
How do you come back on something like that?
I mean, that's an explosive team that you just beat right there.
- Yeah, absolutely.
I mean they came out firing and we just, we had to stay calm.
We couldn't panic.
'cause as soon as we panicked, they just keep, they would keep taking advantage of us and we just had to slow down and find our groove and we found our feet and we got running.
- Right.
Saban, tell us about your classmates there and going out with a gold ball in your senior year.
- I think it feels great.
I mean, back to back to back, you know what I'm saying?
It feels awesome.
And I think just the leaders we have on our team are great.
Lucas is like a second coach.
He is like, brings us together like no one else.
- Hey boys, how good was Bingham today?
Bingham, go again.
We good.
I'll tell you, you had that great pass.
I think that came from Aiden.
That, that long pass or actually it was more of a, you know, skip pass or a belief there.
Yeah, I mean the cohesiveness of this team is incredible.
I mean, how do you make it work?
- Just putting the work in practice, listen to each other.
Follow what each other say, listen to coach.
Just put it all together at the end of the day.
That's all we do.
- Very good.
Let's bring Jacob in here too.
We had a hell of a game.
Mayor.
Yeah.
Fresh freshman.
We got, we we got he freshman gets the easy question.
All right.
That's all you can have.
It's, it's about, it's about the, what's your name?
Tell us it's, well, it's about the senior leadership right now.
You see now you're gonna emote right now you're gonna tell us about how important it was the senior leadership has been with this team.
- Yeah, I mean, honestly, we got some great leaders and Kyle, Sammy, Luke, like all of our seniors.
Not, not just like the captains, like everybody picks each other up.
You know, like if, if we're having a negative practice, like the seniors will get on us, they'll be like, guys, we gotta pick the energy up.
And they just lead by example and like, through their, through their words, through Luke's speeches, his practice speeches.
But yeah, no, just great leadership has led us to this moment.
First time in school history.
It feels great.
- It was never a time you were sick of his speeches.
Tell me the truth, right?
- Maybe in the middle of the season, maybe, you know, during, during the grind, as coach likes to call it mid-January.
You know, it gets a little long.
But just being able to be led by the seniors, especially my brothers.
Just really special.
- All right, I gotta get coach in here.
What the, can we interrupt and get coach in here real quickly?
We're a little, we're a little cramped on time here.
All right, coach.
Alright.
We're gonna give you the unfair question here.
All right.
You're gonna go down as the coach that bring the first gold ball to Monmouth Academy.
How much, how much weight is it on that statement?
How can it sink in for you?
- You know, I'm just a lucky guy at the top of a long line of good coaches.
You know, this is a community achievement.
We've had a lot of great coaches with these guys all the way up through the Harmon's dad, Levi's dad, Kyle's dad.
We've just had a lot of guys working with these guys.
Coach Fletcher, our soccer coach, coach middle school.
Some of these guys, you know, I'm just the guy at the end of a long line of great coaches.
And I'm just a lucky guy that gets to coach these guys is this is all their award, man.
They earned this.
These, these boys won this game today on their she sheer heart and determination.
And that's just not one coach.
That's, every coach in our town coaches these boys to win like that.
And that's what we do.
We're the last, one of the last communities that believes in three sport athletes and really pushes three sport athletes.
And we work on that.
And we're proud to have our basketball program finally on par with our baseball and soccer programs.
And we're putting this bad boy in the trophy case right between the others.
All - Right.
Very good.
Very good.
All right.
Lucky guy.
Congratulations guys.
This is your moment.
Tell the camera what it's like to be stage champ.
- All right, congra, congratulations to Mon Smith Academy.
You know, I, I have looking at these guys, I think I might, I think I might bring back the mullet.
Let's just see - What, well - See how that goes.
- I, I, I wish you wish you well on that one.
- So a 52 50 win for the Mustangs of Monmouth Academy also just got the word that Wyndham winners in the boys class Double A in overtime over Gorham 62 to 58.
So that puts the wraps on this year's state title Game Coach - Merrill, coach Morl mentioned something really nice that, you know, three sport athletes.
Yep.
There's a lot of those though.
Orno had it actually Oceanside, so we've seen a lot of that.
Maybe it's, it's coming back.
- We thank you so much for joining us here on the stations of Maine Public Television to enjoy some high school basketball action.
It is a pleasure to bring you these games by my broadcast partner, Ken Win.
And Jim Ba, I'm Brent Stevens, on behalf of the entire production crew, thank you and good night.
