In the early 1990s, a new style of hip-hop music began to emerge.
It would be called underground hip-hop music.
It blended many different musical and cultural influences, from Afrobeat to bebop to psychedelic rock to the Black Panther Party to Rudy Ray Moore to Angela Davis and Maya Angelou.
All sorts of influences swirled in this music.
In New York, there was De La Soul, A Tribe Called Quest, Digable Planets.
On the West Coast, there were Souls of Mischief, Pharcyde, Freestyle Fellowship.
The sound spread around the United States.
In Chicago there was Common, In Detroit there was J Dilla.
And here in Naptown, there were the Mudkids.
The group was founded by Rusty Redenbacher and Tyler Knapp.
They were influenced by those groups, but they made their own sound rooted in our local Indianapolis culture.
They took that sound national.
They played with Blackalicious.
They played with Wu-Tang.
They played with The Roots.
They played with Dead Prez.
Rusty Redenbacher famously battled Eminem at the legendary Scribble Jam Hip Hop Festival in 1997.
And throughout it all, they remained here in Naptown for those reasons and many more.
Rusty and the Mudkids are heroes in the Indianapolis hip-hop scene.
So all of us at WFYI are psyched to welcome the Mudkids to the stage.
Were the Mudkids from Indianapolis, Indiana and we play hip-hop music.
