And I'm a musician and all-around creative.
I do a little bit of visual arts, a little bit of fashion.
So I'm originally from Malawi, but I live in Boise, Idaho.
I've lived there for the past six years now.
And we came to Spokane to record the "Inland Session."
We're grateful that PBS brought us out here.

♪ Fever, fever ♪ Fever ♪ Ta, ta, ta, da, ta, da, ta, ta ♪ Growing up in Malawi, I listened to a lot of South African music, some Zimbabwean music, some Malawian music, but there was also large American influence.
So I also listened to Lionel Richie.
And my dad loved jazz, so I heard a lot of different sounds growing up from all over the world really.
Mixing them up has also been a very fun exercise, and seeing what works, and seeing what we like, and seeing what we can come up with that is new and beautiful and influenced by all these different cultures that influenced me, and us.

"Sekelela," it means smile.
And it has a lyric, "Look in the mirror when you're real low and tell yourself you're beautiful and you'll be strong," I truly believe in, you know, the power of affirmations for the self.
