(upbeat music) - Salt Lake Acting Company invites you to experience a love triangle gone wrong in "Murder Ballad," a rock opera that explores the things we do for love.
Latoya Cameron joins us with more on this noire thriller.
Latoya, I don't do that for love, but what's going on with "Murder Ballad"?
- Well, it's everything you've said.
It is love.
It is big emotions, passions, humans, you know, being fully human, and unfortunately, things go wrong.
- [Liz] And messy it sounds like.
- Oh, it's so messy, girl.
(Liz and Latoya laughing) - And it's set to music, right?
- Yes, yeah.
It's a rock opera musical, so the whole show, we sing through the whole thing, and so you're gonna be, when you come see it, singing the songs probably after, more involved, and it invites more of the full emotions that these characters are going through.
So it's really a good time.
- What are some of your favorite aspects from this play?
- I think, in musicals and in this play particularly, we are exploring all emotional ranges, from falling in love for the first time, deep passions, betrayal, forgiveness possibly, and then of course, at the end, there's some mysterious, like, who did it kind of stuff that happens in this play.
And of course, you know, it's called "Murder Ballad" for a reason, so there is a murder.
- [Liz] Wow.
- But who is it?
(Liz laughing) You know?
So.
- Yeah, a murder that you can tap your toes to the show as it's going.
- You can tap.
You're gonna be leaning in being like, "I think you did it.
No wait, you did it over here.
No, maybe she did?
Wait, I don't even know."
And then at the end, there's a huge reveal, and you're just like, "Oh."
It's a good time.
- I love that.
I am so grateful that we have this as a resource that people can go and see and check out here in Utah.
What is it about the musicals that you simply love?
- I just think I love music.
I love music.
Humans love music.
They can relate to it quicker.
They can lean in quicker when it becomes, like, music.
So that's what I love about it.
I mean, you've gotta support local artists doing what they do best, and why not come see a musical?
