- Before we continue on with more music, Sharon Smith-Akinsanya sat down to talk with pastors, Chris and Jori Thibodeaux from Family Life Center to hear about the love they are sharing this holiday season.
(chiming music) - I'm here today with pastors, Chris and Jori Thibodeaux from Family Life Center.
Pastor Jori, would you let me know what's going on with that, with your ministry?
I know you're about living your best life and all of those, but tell us about it.
- Yes, so important.
You know, in addition to the ministry, we have another arm which is called, Agape Oasis, and it's really our outreach into the community where we provide 24 hour childcare.
As a matter of fact, it was the first 24 hour childcare in the state of Minnesota.
- Awesome!
- Yeah, so important to reach people where they are and provide services for those that are working when we're asleep at night.
- Yes.
- Their children still need, you know, services and arms that are open there to receive them.
- Yes.
- But one of the other things that we're heavily involved in on the Oasis side is really about helping families that are in domestic abuse.
- Yeah.
- It's so crucial that we provide services and integrated services that are helping people to thrive past the trauma.
- We had an uptick in domestic violence during the pandemic, right?
- We absolutely did.
- So, you know, God bless you for being there.
- Thank you.
- Pastor Chris, I know you have something to add to that because we had a conversation earlier that I was very excited about, how important it is to be leaders, right?
In this world.
- Yes, yes.
- And so tell me more about that.
- Well, again, the mission of our church is live your best life now.
And what we tell people, is Sunday morning, it's great.
Play the music, you dance, your shout, and you sing, you scream at the pastor.
All of those are wonderful.
What happens on Monday?
- Yes.
- What happens on Tuesday?
- Yes.
- And so we believe you have to take the word of God out of the church's four walls and go out into the world.
Even what we're doing through our nonprofit work, so that people really can see the active love of Christ.
Because Jesus did not live inside of church buildings.
- Yes, right.
- He was walking streets.
He was laying hands on people.
He was talking to people.
- Yes!
- So we believe we live in a day and age that we didn't come to take sides.
We came to take over.
- All right!
- We want to take over boardrooms, school rooms, offices.
We want to make sure people of God are in the right position.
- Yes.
- 'Cause if we're in the right place, we can have the right influence.
- That is awesome.
You know, we're in the season.
What is this particular holiday season mean to both of you?
- I think we've had to pivot, and not panic.
- Yes.
- Even in the middle of a pandemic, and I think that this is a coming out season.
You know, we still look around, and though the pandemic still may be around us, it's still a time for us to celebrate.
- Yes.
- It's still a time for us to rejoice.
It's still a time for us to be present, to show up and enjoy the life that we currently have now.
- Absolutely.
- And unwrap this love that God has for us.
It's a gift, just like the song was talking about.
- Yes.
- So it's now, what are you going to do with it?
I can give you a gift, but the choice is up to you to unwrap it.
- Right, and receive it.
- Yes, and we believe it is a season for people to open up, and celebrate, and acknowledge the love of Christ on a day to day, hourly, minute basis.
- Yes.
- Yes.
- Because if not, you can get so caught up in what's going on around you that you forget to really be appreciative of the things that's going on right now.
- No question about that.
What is your fondest Christmas memory?
- My family originally is from New Orleans, and her family is originally from Mississippi, so my family does really, gumbo and etouffee.
- Yes.
- And her family is more, you know, macaroni and cheese and ham, so I said, babe, there is no turkey.
There's no ham, you better get a bowl.
(woman laughing) And so, we joked because then when we left Minnesota we would go to hers.
I was like, where's the rice and gravy?
Where's the shrimp?
- Yes.
- And what we found, we laugh, because it was really the first time our two families, we saw them mesh together.
- Yes.
- Two different experiences, two different ways of growing up, and so now when we start to smell the gumbo on one side of the family, we laugh and smile, and when we start to smell what's going on the other side of the family, we smile, but it brings us to this place of it's a season of love.
- It really is, and a time of coming together.
- Absolutely, togetherness.
- Yes.
- And we'll always remember that.
- Absolutely.
Togetherness and love.
- Yes.
- You know?
Thank you so much for giving us a little bit of your extra time to talk about Christmas and talk about the work that you're doing to impact our community.

- Spread joy for the holidays.
Let's take a look.
(chiming music) - Oh my goodness.
I'm here with Wayne Randolph Felton, the Arch Bishop of Holy Christian Church International.
- Yes, ma'am.
- Along with his lovely wife, First Lady, Deandre Felton.
- Thank you.
- Thank you for having us.
- Bishop, I know that your church is all about uplifting the community.
- Most definitely.
- You know, making sure that we're moving forward, right?
- Correct.
- And, I know education is important to you.
Tell me a little bit more about that.
- We have two programs in our church that are dynamic.
One's called Sons Of Glory and Blossom, for male and female.
And basically it's a educational apparatus that deals with life.
It deals with tutoring.
It deals with emotional stability.
It deals with preparation for academic success.
- Yes.
- And 100% of all of the students that come through that program from our church have graduated from college or have matriculated in college.
- Awesome.
- So what we're seeking to do is to keep a certain persons from becoming a permanent underclass by giving them the tools and resources so that they can be empowered to make life choices, because that's what an education ultimately does.
It gives you the ability to make choices.
- Absolutely.
We have to break the cycle.
And First Lady, I know that you are all about women.
- Yes, well I take both a spiritual and a practical approach in ministering to the women.
Getting them to understand exactly how to walk in this Christian way.
Not only spiritually, but practically.
- We've been through a lot, you know, over the past two years as a people.
Lots of trauma in our community, you know, so what does this holiday season particularly mean to both of you?
- To me, it's a celebration of life, right?
It is the birth of Christ, our savior, who is the hope of life.
- Yes.
- You know, we're dealing with a global pandemic that we've been trying to keep from becoming a global panic.
- Right!
- You know?
- Right.
(man chuckling) - You know, to not panic, but to live.
To make wise choices about your health, making those decisions that are gonna put people in a position to live a better quality of life, live longer, as well as not be a detriment to others around you.
- We came together as a community, as a church community, and really worked very, very hard to make sure that needs were met.
That our seniors, especially our seniors were taken care of.
And I give that glory.
- Vulnerabilities came to the surface and people who would usually walk in pride, had to cry out for help.
- Yes.
- So we fed the hungry.
We clothed the naked.
As you stated, we went after the seniors to be sure that they were secure, and I did everything I could to fight for the needs of them with the governor and the Minnesota department of health, working in cahoots with the Minnesota Council of Churches.
- Well, you know, that's what leadership is all about.
Making sure that we use our gifts to take care of our people.
- Absolutely.
- You know, as we think about Christmas, you know, I always like to ask about the fondest Christmas memory.
- Yes.
- That's Mrs. Christmas.
- Mrs. Christmas, yes.
I heard about the, all the decorations and things like that.
- Yes, I'm all about the holiday season period.
Every holiday is about the lights, the decorations.
- Christmas music starts.
- The smell.
In November 1st.
(woman laughing) November 1st, our family has a tradition.
- It's a light fit.
(group laughing) - That we listen to Christmas music, but it is the family gatherings, the grand babies, all of that.
It attributes to all of my fondest memories.
- We got married as students at Tuskegee and we were broke.
(woman chuckling) - Oh, well.
- Very.
- College students, I get that.
(woman laughing) - We had a tinsel Christmas tree bare at the bottom.
Nothing.
We couldn't even afford to go home for Christmas.
And I came home and I cried because I said, I'm not gonna be able to get my wife any Christmas gifts, so Christmas Eve, all these gifts from our families came in and were under the tree.
And I was like, yes!
