- Tonight, the sounds of the world come to "Detroit Performs."

We are featuring performances from the 35th anniversary of the incredible "Concert of Colors" festival.

Each July, the "Concert of Colors" festival fills venues throughout Midtown Detroit with music from around the globe.

This year's festival honors the memory of the festival's founder, Ismael Ahmed.

Enjoy the "Concert of Colors" on "Detroit Performs."

- [Announcer] Funding for "Detroit Performs" is provided by the Kresge Foundation, the Fred and Barbara Erb Family Foundation, Gregory Haynes and Richard Sonenklar and by contributions to your PBS station from viewers like you.

Thank you.

(upbeat music) - Gary Bartz is an acclaimed American alto and soprano saxophonist and composer known for his distinctive blend of what we know as bebop, spiritual jazz, and jazz-funk.

He has enjoyed a career spanning over 70 years.

Over the decades, he has shared the stage with some of the most prominent figures in jazz, including Max Roach, Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers, McCoy Tyner, Charles Mingus, and Miles Davis.

He's released over 45 solo albums and won two GRAMMY Awards.

It is my privilege tonight to bring to you a National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Master, Gary Bartz.

(audience applauding) - Thank you.

So if-you've never seen us before, we're not gonna stop in between tunes and discuss what to do next because we're professionals.

And what we do is we don't call a set list.

Well, actually, sometimes we do, but we kind of feed off of the audience.

We feed off of the way you make us feel.

And looking out at you and feeling you already, I know you're going to make us have a good show, so we really appreciate it.

(audience applauding) So if you see or hear something that sounds like we stopped, we didn't really stop.

It's a musical device called a "rest," so we hope you enjoy it.

Thank you.
