So needless to say, there's multi-story go kart track here, all electric cars that go up to about 45 miles an hour.
It is so fast.
And the ide behind the Science of Speed is they blend the education with the actual action of getting in a car.
And it's all about the science and technology innovations that have been driven by racing of auto and motorcycles.
We talk about aerodynamics, physics, G-forces when you hit brakes, and then you hop on a car and you get to experience it in real time.
Once youre out there on the track, that's when you're really going to experience the thrill of it all.
Torque.
Aerodynamics.
Velocity.
Pressure.
Speed.
What does it all mean?
So I'm nebbin around the Science of Speed here at the Kamin Science Center.
The genesis of this idea, came about from a conversation I had with my friend who took me out at Pitt Race.
It occurred to me, there's so much science here.
You may be used to power steering.
But when it comes to IndyCar and a lot of other race cars, you got to deal with the full torque.
32 pounds?!
Turning left, turning right... The more power you have, the less you feel the road.
So race car drivers want to feel every aspect of the road so there's no power steering.
And so they have unpowered, which means that it requires a tremendous amount of force, 32ft pounds of torque.
Torque is a twisting force.
It's how much work it takes to twist something.
So the steering wheels for race car drivers require about 32ft pounds.
To twist the jar off a lid that won't come off, it's about two foot pounds of torque, Imagine just sitting here and turning this thing... You do that for 15 minutes, that's lik my entire workout for the day.
And they're doing it for hours on end.
For anyon that watches a formula one race, you know that the countdown clock is one of the most important things.
Of course, it's how the F1 racers can get a great start at the jump, but it's manual.
One of the things you nee is an incredible reaction time.
At every point in the race, you need to be able to make split second decisions.
So we have a reaction time simulator here.
And this simulates the race lights that start a race.
I beat my time.
You did even better than me, though.
Good job!
Hey, I beat my original time.
That's all that matters.
Another area where there's been major developments in technology that's come from auto and motorcycl racing is in engine technology.
This is the Audio R8 V10 deconstructed engine.
Lets take a look.
This thing is massive!
So you can see here we an Audi R8 which has a V10 engine.
Which means it's a ten cylinde engine that's configured in a V like this.
It's a high output fuel injected engine.
The electric motor gives very high torque output, which means it's fast off the line and then it switches over to the engine.
So when my friend took me out at Pitt Race in his 911, the faster he went, the more the car would stick to the ground.
And I remember saying, I don't know how your car can stay on the road around those corners.
And he said, “That's why you hav to go fast.” And I saw first hand how fast F1 drivers need to go in the same simulator used by Max Verstappen.
This is a real F1 wheel.
Yeah.
Whoa!
I can't tell you what every single button is.
Same.
That is probably the most authentic racing experience you can get.
That's from Wave Italy.
They create the actual simulators for the drivers to train on.
You hop in that thing.
It grips you when you hit the brakes.
It goes fast.
“I am stupid, I am stupid.” It's easily the closest you can get.
It moves, it shakes, everything you can imagine.
So I may not be Formul One World Champion anytime soon, but one thing I am good at: eating food.
I think it's time for a pit So they're calling it the Pit Stop Lounge.
And we have just a taste here.
Oh, what is this a chickpea salad club sandwich.
Prosciutto and fresh mozzarella.
So the pit stops complete.
I'm very full and I think it's time to race.
I'm racing this guy right here.
We're racing.
- We're ready.
- You excited?
Yeah, I think I may beat you, Mr.
Mayor.
I'm gonna try.
I feel the need.
The need for speed.
The adrenaline!
I love the drifting!
My first impressions of the Science of Speed is that it is speed.
It is so fast.
Going around those corners, I drifted a couple of times.
Getting to race the mayor.
He may have beat me by a little bit.
That's okay.
He's the mayor.
He can have that.
I'm going for gold next time, baby.
Our goal is t inspire people through science.
Right?
And if you sit and you watch science on a blackboard, it's not always that inspiring, right?
But if you see what science is, and then you get in a cart and you race around the track and then you get out and you feel what that science was, that's inspiration.
I just want folks to understand that when you come in here, obviousl this is a massive labor of love.
It's going to show through immediately.
And the amount of education you're going to get even before you get on the cart is, is just excellent.
There's nothing else like it anywhere nearby.
And I think, I think we can confidently claim that.
You remember things best when you're excited about them, right?
You're more likely to go and research it again.
Find out more on your own.
So we want people to have that visceral response to it.
And what I love about this is because it's all it's it's application, right?
It's not just concept.
So we're showing concept everywhere.
And so you can walk around here and learn the concepts of how an engine is designed, what aerodynamics are, all of those things.
But then you get to see them in action or practice them in action.
So you learn it and then you experience it,
