The law creates new penalties for crimes that involve trafficked firearms
Under a new New Jersey law, a person who commits a firearm trafficking violation that results in a death would be guilty of a first-degree crime, which is punishable by up to 20 years in prison. A person convicted of gun trafficking in a case that involved a shooting injury would be guilty of a second-degree crime and face up to 10 years in prison.

Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorshipGovernor Murphy signed a bill today that creates strict criminal penalties for anyone who illegally trafficks or sells a gun that ends up being used to kill someone or cause significant bodily injury.
The law also creates criminal liability for the illegal seller.
If that same gun ends up being used to commit a crime after it's sold.
The law called the Real Accountability for Consequences of Unlawful Trafficking of Firearms Act.
That's a mouthful.
Is the first of its kind legislation in the country where a person could be charged for a first degree or second degree crime if they illegally sell a firearm.
And it's the latest in the Murphy administration's efforts to crack down on the illegal distribution and possession of guns in the state.
More than a dozen gun safety laws signed by him since 2018.
Some of them have been challenged in state and federal court.
Governor Murphy touting this one as a model for the nation that he says has failed to pass any common sense gun safety laws.
The reality is gun violence is a nationwide challenge.
And as long as the majority in the House of Representatives refuses to take action, we here in New Jersey cannot slow down.
And frankly, we don't have a choice because today, according to the CDC, gun fire is the number one cause of death for America's children.
Number one.
