Southern Oregon Responds
New Spirit Village
Episode 52 | 2m 10sVideo has Closed Captions
New Spirit Village re-thinks affordable housing to create a way out of multi-generational poverty.
In 2020, after the Almeda Wildfire, Kathryn and Barry Thalden decided to build a housing project dedicated to fire-victims. New Spirit Village is a re-thinking of affordable housing. While this one project will not solve the housing crisis, it can serve as a prototype for building affordable communities, because it employs a whole new approach that creates a way out of multi-generational poverty.

The wildfires then destroyed over 2,600 homes, many of which were affordable, exacerbating the housing crisis.
Here we are, nearly four years after the fires.
The biggest challenge remains the same, the availability of housing, particularly affordable housing.
This is what low income housing could look like.
This is the same density as apartment houses.
This is 15 units per acre, which means we use 75% less land per house, less streets per house, less utility lines per house.
So this will be a dream come true for 87 families.
It's a way to break through multi-generational poverty.
This housing is for families that are in the income bracket, 20%-35% below median income.
New Spirit was really created to speak to specific conditions on the ground here in Southern Oregon.
In fact, this program is in many ways setting a template for the housing we must construct across the state and for so many families who are in need.
To benefit from what it means to have homeownership, stability, security, to be able to have the equity in the home and to have long term affordability.
In a day and age where housing is now such a commodity, where people cannot keep affordability because of who owns their homes or owns the land underneath them.
New Spirit Village is gonna create hope and a future of prosperity for more Oregonians, And I am so proud that it's here in Oregon and here in Medford.
Every community across Oregon, urban, suburban, rural frontier has a housing crisis.
And I can tell you, everyone will want a new spirit village in their community.
