AS A FIRST-JEN RACE PAKISTANI AMERICAN ARTIST SADIA FEELS THERE ARE QUESTIONS AROUND CULTURE AND IDENTITY THAT THEY MUST ADDRESS IN THEIR WORK.
SHE USES DRAWING, VIDEO, PERFORMANCE, SCULPTURE AND PHOTOGRAPHER IN THEIR WORK.
THEY MET WITH US AT THE WEXNER CENTER FOR THE ARTS TO TALK ABOUT THEIR WORK AND INSPIRATION.
>> THE TITLE OF THE SHOW IS INSPIRED BY MY SISTER'S POEM AND OBVIOUSLY WE ARE WORKING WITH SIMILAR CONTENT AND SHE OFTEN WRITES ABOUT, YOU KNOW, OUR CHILDHOOD IN QUEENS, BUT OBVIOUSLY THE FAMILY HISTORY OF DISPLACEMENT WAS PRETTY SIGNIFICANT IN THE STORY.
IT WAS ONE OF THE FIRST THINGS THAT I WAS THINKING ABOUT FOR THIS SHOW, EVEN BEFORE THE WORK, AND THEN OBVIOUSLY AS THE WORK WAS BEING MADE BY ME, IT SUDDENLY OCCURRED TO ME THAT I SHOULD JUST USE THIS LINE FROM HER POEM.
IT SPOKE TO SO MUCH.
IT SPOKE TO, YOU KNOW, LANGUAGE, IT SPOKE TO POETRY, IT SPOKE TO BREADTH, IT SPOKE TO AESTHETIC AND STRUCTURE AND, OF COURSE, YOU KNOW, IMAGERY AND MATERIAL.
THIS IS A VERY SPECIFIC ARCHITECTURAL SPACE AND SO IT IS A VESSEL-LIKE SPACE AND SO IT KIND OF NARROWS AS WE WALK TOWARDS THE TWO-CHANNEL VIDEO.
SO WHAT I WANTED TO KIND OF THINK ABOUT, AND I THINK I SUCCEEDED, IS THAT I WANTED TO THINK ABOUT HOW THE VIEWER KIND OF WALKED THROUGH THE SPACE.
YOU KNOW, I FELT LIKE THE OBJECTS HOLD A LOT OF MEANING.
THEY WERE PLACED IN AREAS THAT OBSTRUCTED OR GUIDED THE VIEWER.
THE THEME OF THE EXHIBITION IS THE HISTORY OF MY OWN FAMILY'S DISPLACEMENT FROM AN AREA ON THE RIVER DUE TO THE BUILDING OF A HYDROELECTRIC DAM AND THAT DAM IS STILL BEING MAINTAINED AND CONTINUED TO BE, YOU KNOW, EXPANDED, AND THIS DISPLACEMENT KIND OF HAPPENED IN THE LATE '60s AND EARLY '70s.
SO MANY OF THE FAMILY MEMBERS THAT WERE DISPLACED ARE STILL LIVING AND SO I GOT TO GO BACK TO PAKISTAN.
THIS WAS NOT ONLY MY FAMILY, BUT ALSO MANY, MANY OTHER FAMILIES THAT WERE IN THAT AREA AND, YOU KNOW, UNTIL THIS DAY THEY HAVEN'T BEEN COMPENSATED, SOME OF THOSE FAMILIES.
I DEVELOPED MY WALL DRAWING PROCESS RIGHT HERE IN COLUMBUS, AND I WAS THINKING ABOUT WHILE, YOU KNOW, I WAS KIND OF MAKING THE WALL DRAWINGS AS AN MFA STUDENT, I WAS THINKING ABOUT ERASURE.
SO WHAT ART TRADITIONAL MATERIALS CAN BE ERASED?
THAT'S MANY, BUT I WAS FOCUSING ON CHARCOAL, GRAPHITE AND INK.
SO I WAS DIRECTLY PUTTING THOSE ON TO THE WALL AND THEN, YOU KNOW, USING MY BODY AND, YOU KNOW, OBVIOUSLY HANDS TO ERASE THOSE MATERIALS.
AND SO FOR THIS WORK I WAS ALSO THINKING ABOUT HOW THE WALL DRAWINGS WILL DISAPPEAR AFTER A SHOW KIND OF IS OVER.
BASICALLY, YOU KNOW, I WOULD PAINT OVER IT OR, YOU KNOW, THE PREP TEAM WOULD PAINT OVER IT, AND SO THERE WOULD BE LAYERS AND LAYERS OF PAINT OVER TIME ON THIS WALL DRAWING THAT ONCE WAS, AND SO REALLY IT HASN'T DISAPPEARED.
JUST THINKING ABOUT LIKE THE HISTORY OF A WALL OR A SPACE.
AND SO ANOTHER STEP FURTHER WAS THE RAST WHICH WAS THE WALL DRAWING IN THE WEXNER CENTER FOR THE ARTS.
I WAS ALSO THINKING ABOUT WAYS IN WHICH THE WALL DRAWING COULD EVOLVE AND CHANGE WITHOUT ME THERE, AND ONE OF THE THINGS I WANTED -- I WAS EXPERIMENTING WITH IN THE STUDIO IS CLAY, BECAUSE WHEN I WENT ON THIS JOURNEY ON THE INDES RIVER BACK IN MARCH 2022 I FOUND THAT THE BOTTOM OF THIS, YOU KNOW, HISTORICAL RIVER IS COVERED IN SILT AND CLAY.
IT HAS COMPLETELY CHANGED THE ECOSYSTEM OF THE INDES RIVER.
SO I TOOK CLAY FROM OHIO AND, ON THE WALL.
AND SO YOU SEE THE CLAY KIND OF DRAWING AND FALLING APART AND THE DRAWING THAT I CREATED ON THE WALL IS A MAPPING OF SORTS, A MAPPING OF, YOU KNOW, A VILLAGE WALL OR EVEN A MOSQUE FORMATION.
SO ALL THAT HAS JUST BEEN DRAWING AND FALLING APART, FALLING ON TO THE GROUND.
OTHER THINGS THAT ARE ON THAT WALL DRAWING ARE CHARCOAL AND INK AND GRAPHITE AND DENIM THAT'S PRESSED INTO THE WALL THAT EVOKES THE INDIS RIVER AND THEN THERE'S ALSO A STRUCTURE THAT KIND OF HOLDS A SECURITY CAMERA THAT'S IN THE SPACE AND THAT STRUCTURE IS A TENT.
YOU CAN KIND OF SEE THE TAUT ROPES THAT EXTEND OUT OF THAT TENT-LIKE DRAWING AND THOSE TAUT ROPES ARE HELD DOWN BY SANDBAGS.
SO IT CREATES A BARRIER, YOU KNOW, THE VIEWER CAN'T WALK UP INTO THE SPACE, THEY CAN JUST WATCH IT KIND OF FALLING APART.
THE CLAY KIND OF FALLS DIRECTLY ON THE FLOOR, BUT ALSO ON THE FLOOR YOU WILL SEE BURNT BRANCHES, AND THOSE BRANCHES ARE ACTUALLY FROM A BOX ELDER TREE THAT HAD FALLEN OVER, YOU KNOW, A THREE-YEAR PERIOD IN MY YARD IN COLUMBUS AND I HAD JUST, YOU KNOW, COLLECTED IT OVER TIME AND HAD BONFIRES WITH FRIENDS WHERE WE TALKED ABOUT GRIEF AND LOSS.
I THINK THE REASON I MAKE WORK IS I FEEL LIKE THAT'S THE ONLY WAY I CAN COMMUNICATE AND I AM THE MOST HAPPIEST WHEN I'M CREATING, AND I THINK THAT'S A BIG PART OF WHY I CREATE.
YOU KNOW, I GREW UP IN A PAKISTANI-MUSLIM HOUSEHOLD AND THE ONLY SIGNIFICANT OTHER CREATIVE PERSON THAT I SAW WAS MY OLDER SISTER.
AND THEN, YOU KNOW, WHEN I WENT OUT INTO THE WORLD, YOU KNOW, NEW YORK CITY AND JERSEY AND, YOU KNOW, COLUMBUS, OHIO, I WAS SEEKING COMMUNITY AND I WAS SEEKING PEOPLE THAT KIND OF LOOKED LIKE ME AND, YOU KNOW, WERE THINKING OF THEMES THAT I WAS WORKING WITH, AND WHEN I FOUND THOSE PEOPLE AND THOSE -- YOU KNOW, THOSE ARTISTS, MAINLY VISUAL ARTISTS, IT JUST REALLY TOUCHED ME AND I FIND THAT MY WORK DOES THE SAME FOR A YOUNGER GENERATION AND THAT, YOU KNOW, I'M ALSO AN EDUCATOR AND SO AT THE OHIO STATE AND SO THAT IS, I THINK, VERY POWERFUL AND REALLY FEEDS THE WORK IN MANY WAYS.

COMIC BOOK ARTIST AND WRITER BOB LATIN IS BEST KNOWN FOR HIS WORK ON MARVEL COMICS, BUT HE HAS OVER 6,500 COMIC BOOKS CREDITED TO HIS NAME.
AN EXHIBITION AT THE HEARTILY GALLERY CELEBRATED HIS LIFE AND CAREER.
IT ALSO BROUGHT ABOUT A SPECIAL COLLABORATION BETWEEN HIMSELF AND ARTIST OLES.

>> SO WHEN I HEARD THAT MARVEL WAS GOING TO KICK OFF THEIR ENTIRE CINEMATIC UNIVERSE WITH MY VERSION OF THAT CHARACTER, IT WAS ONE OF THE MOST GRATIFYING EXPERIENCES OF MY LIFE.
IN 2007 I WAS ASKED BY MARVEL STUDIOS TO COME OUT AND DO THE NARRATIVE FOR THE DVDs.
IT OCCURRED TO ME WHILE I WAS OUT THERE THAT I HAD CLIMBED EVERY MOUNTAIN, THAT I HAD DONE EVERYTHING IN COMICS.
SUDDENLY THE WHOLE CINEMATIC WORLD OPENED UP TO ME AND THAT JUST SEEMED LIKE SUCH AN ADVENTURE AND A CHANCE TO WATCH MY CHARACTERS BREATHE AND TALK AND MOVE.
SO I MOVED TO HOLLYWOOD AND I LEARNED THE LANGUAGE AND THE CUSTOMS OF HOLLYWOOD.
AFTER EIGHT OR NINE YEARS IN HOLLYWOOD I DECIDED TO MOVE BACK TO FLORIDA.
I REALLY WANTED TO TRY TO WORK OUTSIDE THE SYSTEM AND AT THE SAME TIME I REALIZED I WAS MISSING MY GRANDCHILDREN'S CHILDHOOD AND THEY WILL I HAVE HAD IN RIVERVIEW AND I WANTED SOME TIME WITH THEM SO I STARTED MY OWN COMPANY.
AFTER I MOVED BACK HERE I MET TYLER.
TYLER RECRUITED ME TO HELP BRING MORE ATTENTION AND INTEREST FINANCIALLY TO MAKING FILMS AND TELEVISION IN FLORIDA.
I HAVE ALWAYS CONTENDED THAT FLORIDA IS A WONDERFUL PLACE TO FILM BECAUSE OF, ONE, YOU HAVE AN AMAZING AMOUNT OF TALENT HERE.
YOU THINK OF WHAT COMES OUT OF RINGLING COLLEGE.
A VARIETY OF TOPOGRAPHY HERE.
WE WORK TOGETHER TO PROMOTE FILM IN FLORIDA, LOBBY THE STATEHOUSE IN TALLAHASSEE.
I SAID THE ONE THING I HAVE LEARNED IN ALL MY YEARS IN TRAVEL AROUND THE WORLD IS EVERYBODY HAS A MARVEL FAN IN THEIR FAMILY.
I SAID I'M GOING TO TAKE A LOT OF FREE POSTERS.
EARLIER THIS SUMMER TYLER CAME TO ME AND SAID THAT HE HAD APPROACHED MAYOR JANE CASTER ABOUT HAVING AN IRON MAN DAY AND TO CELEBRATE WHAT I'VE DONE AND WHAT I'VE BROUGHT HERE TO THE CITY AND TO THE STATE.
SO MAYOR JANE CASTER PROCLAIMED AUGUST 4th BOB LATIN DAY.
SO I WAS JUST AMAZED AT HOW THIS WHOLE THING SNOWBALLED INTO THIS HUGE EVENT WITH RADIO SHOWS AND TELEVISION SHOWS AND SIGNINGS AND CLEANINGS OF THE MOVIE AND WHEN COMMISSIONER KEN HAGEN GAVE THE ACTUAL PROCLAMATION -- >> THANK YOU SO MUCH.

SO TYLER ASKED ME TO COME UP TO HIS OFFICE ONE DAY AND TO BRING SOME OF MY ARTWORK THAT WE COULD DISPLAY AT THE SCARFONI GALLERY.
WHEN I GOT UP THERE I FOUND OUT WHAT HIS MASTER PLAN WAS.
>> TYLER REACHED OUT TO ME AND SAID HE HAD A PRETTY SPECIAL PROJECT THAT HE WANTED ME TO COLLABORATE ON OR GET MY INPUT AND THAT'S ALL HE SAID.
>> ANOTHER LOCAL ARTIST WHO HAD WORKED AND HAD A CONNECTION WITH IRON MAN WAS BAST WHO LIVES IN ST. PETE.
>> WE WERE SITTING AT THE TABLE AND INTRODUCED TO THE GROUP BUT I'M ALSO LEARNING THAT THIS IS THE PROJECT.
IT'S TO COLLABORATE WITH BOB LATIN.
>> HE DID ALL OF THE PAINTINGS IN IRON MAN THREE SO WE ARE ACTUALLY IRON BROTHERS.
>> IN 2012 I GET A PHONE CALL, HE WAS LIKE, HEY, ROBERT DOWN JOE JR.
WANTS YOUR ART IN IRON MAN 3.
IMMEDIATELY I WAS LIKE -- >> WE BEGAN COLLABORATING ON SOME IDEAS FOR PAINTINGS THAT HE COULD DO BASED ON MY WORK.
BASK AND I HAD SIMILAR BACKGROUNDS AND SIMILAR PROBLEMS THAT WE HAD TO DEAL WITH.
I GREW UP IN THE MIDWEST AND IT WAS A DIFFICULT CHILDHOOD BECAUSE MY MOTHER HAD TO RAISE FIVE OF US ALONE.
I LEARNED TO READ FROM COMICS.
I BUGGED MY SISTERS TO TEACH ME HOW TO READ.
I COULD TELL WHAT WAS HAPPENING IN THE STORIES BECAUSE THE PICTURES CONNECTED, ONE PANEL TO THE OTHER BUT I DIDN'T KNOW WHAT THEY WERE SAYING AND I WAS SO CURIOUS.
>> GROWING UP IN THE CZECH REPUBLIC WE LIVED UNDER A COMMUNIST OPPRESSION AND IT WAS PRETTY STIFLING.
I'M ALWAYS THE OUTCAST AND I'VE ALWAYS LOOKED TOWARDS ART TO KIND OF HELP ME THROUGH A LOT OF THOSE MOMENTS.
>> I FOUND THAT COMIC BOOKS WERE AN INCREDIBLE ESCAPE FOR ME.
>> STARTED LOOKING TOWARDS LIKE ART LIKE AS A -- AS A GO-TO FORM OF JOY AND THERAPY AND DISTRACTION, WHATEVER IT MIGHT BE.
I DIDN'T HAVE THAT MANY FRIENDS GROWING UP SO IT WAS JUST KIND OF SOMETHING THAT IF I CREATED MY OWN WORLD, MY OWN PLACES WHERE I CAN GO, SOURCES OF ENTERTAINMENT ESSENTIALLY.

>> EVENTUALLY WHEN I GOT INTO COMICS I STARTED MY CAREER AT D.C. AND I MET MY WRITING PARTNER.
THEY OFFERED US THREE BOOKS THAT WERE IN DANGER OF CANCELLATION.
THAT'S HOW THEY TRIED OUT NEW TALENT.
WE DID A COMPLETE OVERHAUL OF THE PREMISE OF IRON MAN.
AT THAT PARTICULAR TIME THE BETTY FORD CLINIC HAD JUST OPENED UP AND PEOPLE WERE TALKING OPENLY ABOUT DRUG AND ALCOHOLISM FOR THE FIRST TIME.
WE WANTED TO GIVE TONY AN INTERNAL STRUGGLE.
>> DEMON IN A BOTTLE.
THERE IS THIS REAL WORLD GROUNDED ELEMENT OF IT AND, YEAH, IT'S LIKE IT'S ABOUT A GUY WHO IS DRESSED UP IN A METAL COSTUME AND HE IS A BILLIONAIRE.
DESPITE HIM HAVING EVERY SINGLE THING IN THE WORLD HE WANTS HE HAS THIS ALBATROSS AROUND HIS NECK THAT IS WEIGHING HIM DOWN AND HAVING HIM SELF-DESTRUCT FROM THE INSIDE.
>> IT OCCURRED TO US THAT THIS WOULD BE AN INTERESTING VILLAIN FOR TONY TO HAVE TO STRUGGLE WITH.
>> ANYBODY NO HAS EVER HAD A VICE THAT THEY WERE STRUGGLING WITH OR SOMETHING INTERNAL, IT'S SELF IS ALWAYS THE HARDEST.
>> I WAS STRUGGLING WITH ALCOHOLISM MYSELF, YOU KNOW, 40 SOMETHING YEARS LATER.
IT WAS A CRY FOR HELP.
>> GOING THROUGH MY OWN STRUGGLES WITH VARIOUS THINGS, VARIOUS SUBSTANCES OR DRINKING OR PARTYING TOO MUCH AS AN ADULT, I GOT TO TRULY APPRECIATE HOW PROFOUND THAT WAS.
>> YOU KNOW, DEMON IN A BOTTLE WAS ROBERT DOWNEY'S -- ONE OF THE REASONS WHY HE SIGNED UP TO DO IRON MAN.
>> SOMETIMES THE MESSAGE OR WHAT THE ARTIST IS PUTTING OUT THERE, THINGS OR THOUGHTS OR IMAGES THAT REFLECT A POINT IN TIME IN HIS LIFE THAT HE WANTS -- HE NEEDS SOMEBODY TO CONNECT WITH THAT.
>> IN ORDER FOR A STORY TO REALLY RESONATE, THE STORY HAS TO COME FROM WITHIN THE CHARACTERS THEMSELVES.
>> IT'S TRULY SOMETHING THAT I CONNECTED WITH PERSONALLY.
>> I SAW A NEW WAY TO KIND OF INTERPRET THE OLD IRON MAN THROUGH BASK'S IMAGINATION.

IT WAS AN AMAZING EXPERIENCE.

I ALSO HAVE A FASCINATION WITH THE HUMAN FIGURE, WHICH IS KIND OF A THROUGH LINE THROUGH MY VISUAL ART, PEP PET RI, SET DESIGN AND IMMERSIVE THEATER WORK AND MY PERFORMANCE.
AT SOME POINT THROUGH WORKING WITH PUPPETS I WAS SHOVED ON TO A STAGE AND I LOVED IT AND I REALIZED THAT I LOVE USING MY OWN BODY TO EXPRESS MY ART, AS WELL AS MY VISUAL ART SKILLS.
I LIKE SORT OF KEEPING MYSELF ON EDGE A LITTLE BIT IN TERMS OF WHAT I DREAM UP.
I LIKE TO SHOCK MYSELF A LITTLE BIT SOMETIMES.
WHEN I'M DESIGNING A SET, IT TENDS TO USE A DIFFERENT PART OF MY BRAIN THAN I USE WHEN I'M PERFORMING.
SO IN MY DESIGN WORK I AM OFTEN DEALING WITH NUMBERS, I'M DEALING WITH MEASUREMENTS AND WHEN I'M PERFORMING I TEND TO WANT TO SHUT THAT PART OF MY BRAIN OFF AND BE A MUCH MORE INTUITIVE MAKER.
