Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorshipwell an investigation is ongoing after part of a two-story Newark apartment building was left in Bruins Friday night it was the result of an explosion that rocked the complex leaving several people injured and many more out of their homes residents say that in the days leading up to the explosion they smelled gas and reported it but as Ted Goldberg reports it's unclear whether their concerns were ignored I was watching TV and I heard the explosion I thought it was a car accident people in Stephen crane Village in Newark were rattled when an explosion tore through this apartment building on Friday the building collapsed and has left at least six people injured and more than 30 people displaced from their homes I was putting my two and a half year old daughter to sleep and then the explosion just happened out of nowhere I saw the smoke and a lot of people running and screaming seeing if there was anyone injured I look down the street I just see the big thing of smoke and I was just worried for the kids because it was kids outside it was really bad there was shattered glass all over the pavement and doors were open off the hinges it was really bad it was really horrific residents could only speculate as to what caused the explosion which has brought police and a ton of yellow tape to this neighborhood why not the people that I had you know watching my home while I was away they smell gas so a lot of people are afraid to even turn like their heaters on PSEG tells us they responded on Friday after the explosion and shut off utilities Stephen crane Village is a public housing complex managed by the Newark Housing Authority residents tell me they're upset with how little communication there's been since the explosion and collapse three days ago I got this from the news I found out through the news and family and friends I mean I'm leaving my mom and my mom is sending me photos of the crowd site that's how fast it got covered so if the news already know then they obviously should be out here with you guys talking to you guys and letting you know what they're going to plan to do or all their ideas I haven't heard anything I haven't heard anything of regarding my safety about my child's safety about what we're going to do to prevent certain you know future causes like this uh I haven't heard anything is there a frustration there are you yes yeah it is very frustrating the Newark Housing Authority was unavailable to comment on this story over the weekend the American Red Cross stepped in to lend food and clothing for people who don't have a home to go back to or disaster workers have met with the families and they'll continue to follow up with those families within 72 hours of the incident and they'll see if there's anything else that they could help with uh additional emotional support or if there's referrals for other non-profits and agencies that might be able to help them with their recovery needs leaders say they're still trying to figure out what caused the explosion in the first place in Newark I'm Ted Goldberg NJ Spotlight News [Music] [Music]
