The ordinance is part of broader movement to loosen the age restriction

Newark made history on Wednesday by becoming the first city in New Jersey to lower the voting age to 16 for its school board elections. The City Council at its meeting Wednesday made it official after hearing from advocates and others who said it will help boost turnout in the little-noticed school elections. Newark’s turnout percentage has hovered in the low single digits in the last few years.
