(bright music) - Ngoma y'Africa will soon host the Africa Day Awards and Benefit Gala, a lively celebration featuring performances, dinner, and inspirational speakers.
Here to tell us more is Yvonne Nsabimana.
Thank you so much for being here.
- Thank you for inviting me.
- So I was there last year and had the time of my life.
The food, the music, the speakers, it was such a powerful event.
What are you hoping people will get this year?
- This year, we are theming this event after Ubuntu spirit again, and we want to share how we all are humans and how we are connected as people who live in Utah.
We're bringing this year again African diaspora leaders, who are able to speak about different speeches about that theme of shared humanity, from entrepreneurs to families to, you know, people who are just thriving, helping back on the continent.
So that is the inspirational part.
We would like people who want to be there to just really come and feel uplifted as they leave, regardless if they're from Utah or not from Utah, as long as they have the love of Africa.
- And there's also wonderful performances that people can check out as well.
Can you talk about those?
- Absolutely.
This year, we have a great lineup of performers.
All of them, they wanted to help because this is a benefit gather for our organization.
We have performers such as Alex Boyé, the Salt Lake City Mass Choir, the French Utah Choir.
We have also the wonderful performers of BYU.
They have a new group of, is called SOAR and Collective.
We also going to have some of our own, obviously, Ngoma performing troop that travels all over Utah for cultural programs.
- And talk a bit about the group and the organization and what you do throughout Utah.
- Yes.
So the nonprofit, our mission is really to promote African cultures and we also want to give resources for African diaspora family who move to Utah.
So while they're able to give back to the community through their beautiful culture they have.
So we have those classes.
We also give for people who want to learn about Africa, but we also do cultural programs, such as the African Heritage Festival.
We also go into schools, and that's where we're able to share with the kids and the future leaders of Utah.
- So many more people, right?
Well, it's such an incredible event and organization.
