Hitting the books is not the only challenge for a college student. As José juggles relationships with friends and family near and far, he is also trying to figure out how to stay in school when financial aid becomes scarce. For him, life is a true balancing act when you are neither from here or from there.

How does a scholarship suddenly become a loan?

WOMAN (on phone): It's a recent development.
The Moore Foundation has decided to change their philanthropic priorities.
We've added a loan to your aid package to make up for that shortfall so you can pay the tuition balance.
- Yes, but I'm already taking out loans and working full-time just to go here.
Can you guys just give me another grant or something?
WOMAN: Unfortunately, we've allocated all of our financial aid this year.
We encourage all students to seek outside scholarship, employment, and ask family members to pitch in.
- I'm already doing all of that.
WOMAN: I'm sorry we can't provide more grants at the moment.
- So you're saying you can't help me?
WOMAN: I'm sorry, John.

WOMAN: I'm sorry, what was that?
- My name is José.
WOMAN: Oh, I'm so sorry about that, Jorge.
Is there anything else I can help with?
(teapot whistling) ♪ (phone ringing, clicks pen) (clears throat) LAUREN (on phone): Hey, bebe, I need a giant favor.
- Oh, hey, it's great to finally hear from you.
Girl, please.
You know I'm at Rebecca's.
And you think you would have called or texted if you were worried about your roomie.
- Fair.
LAUREN: I didn't even see you at the Pecas concert this weekend.
