Drinking water supplies currently are not in jeopardy
New Jersey environmental officials call it a "flash drought" – a depletion of moisture in soil due to the lack of rain and the extreme heat in recent weeks that's turning lawns, shrubs and crops brown and crunchy. A swath across central Jersey was upgraded to "moderate drought" status Thursday. The state's reservoirs remain in decent shape to supply drinking water.
