Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorshipState and local leaders across New Jersey are condemning the fatal shooting of a Minneapolis resident and U.S.
citizen by a federal immigration officer on Wednesday.
A warning the following contains graphic images.
Various eyewitness videos taken on the scene show ICE agents approaching an SUV stopped in the middle of the street.
The SUV starts to drive away when an officer standing in front of the car can be seen pulling out a gun, firing at the driver, killing 37-year-old Renee Nicole Good of Minnesota, sparking protests, vigils and outrage nationwide.
In a statement on social media, Governor-elect Mikey Sherrill called the shooting a tragedy, saying in part, "I know as a former prosecutor and military veteran that sending armed, masked agents into communities to drive a political agenda does not make us safer, but it instead creates a culture of fear, distrust, and resentment.
Others, including members of Congress, are calling it murder.
The Trump administration is defending the agent, calling it an act of defense.
At the statehouse today, advocates pressed lawmakers to pass immigration protection bills that have been lingering.
We're going to keep on saying that ICE is not allowed to be in our streets.
They're terrorizing.
It's not like they're going for criminals like as the narrative was put out by the administration.
Now they're killing U.S.
citizens and we're not going to permit that.
In our rapid response teams that we have, it is essential that we build power and that we build a network so that the community saves the community.
