It’s the first new federal holiday created by Congress in nearly 40 years.

Juneteenth is now officially a federal holiday in the United States. President Joe Biden Thursday made it the law of the land with a stroke of his pen after Congress overwhelmingly voted in favor of the proposal. The holiday commemorates the end of slavery, when on June 19, 1865 enslaved Black Americans in Texas learned they were freed two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed.
