Virginia journalists are using donor dollars to fill the gaps left by corporate cuts.
Across the country non-profit newsrooms are emerging to fill the void left by corporate layoffs and cutbacks at news operations. In Virginia, at least four non-profit newsrooms have cropped up over the last several years to cover the stories that aren’t being covered by the state’s flagship news operations like The Richmond Times Dispatch, The Virginian-Pilot, and The Roanoke Times.
