(soft ambient music) Apples: Washington grew five billion of them this season.
Though ubiquitous, apples are often in the shadow of the many other fruit and produce offerings at the grocery store.
As Crosscut's Eastern Washington reporter Mai Hoang writes, the apple industry wants to get more consumers onboard with new varieties.
Just two decades ago, Red Delicious made up half the crop.
This year, it's just 15%.
The Honeycrisp, introduced in the '90s, proved that was possible.
Two years ago, the Cosmic Crisp made its splashy debut after 20 years of development at Washington State University.
Both varieties are popular and the industry hopes that they and other new apple varieties down the line will boost sales over the next decade.
