A lot of factors go into election victories, but in the end, election results come down to the math of turnout: who voted and who didn't.
Case in point, Washington's 2022 midterm elections.
Democrats hung on to a pair of competitive House seats, the secretary of state's office, and a strong reelection win for US Senator Patty Murray.
In her quest to oust Murray, Republican challenger Tiffany Smiley ran up big margins in Yakima County.
However, just 49% of Yakima County voters returned their ballots this year, a roughly 12% drop from the 2018 midterms, according to the Washington Secretary of State's Office.
Other eastern counties experienced drops as well.
Compared to 2018, turnout also declined by double digits in Franklin, Ferry, and Adams Counties.
