The plastics industry in Yakima Valley is seeking to replaces plastics.
The industry provides hundreds of jobs for residents in Central Washington, but in response to both consumer pressure and new government regulations, these manufacturers are looking for alternatives to plastic.
Yakima-based Kwik Lok, for example, makes Eco-Lok, used by Franz Bakery.
The Eco-Lok resembles the tabs used to close bread bags, but there's one significant difference.
It's made with up to 20% less petroleum thanks to the use of plant-based materials.
The company aims to have 50% of its products made with sustainable materials by 2025.
Paragon Films, which makes wraps for shipping, has created a durable but thinner film that requires less plastic material overall, reducing the amount of plastic entering the environment.
