With the opening of a major exhibition at Seattle Art Museum, Northwest audiences have a chance to reflect on the legacy of image in Cunningham.
The Seattle photographer was described as one of the most important West Coast photographers of the 20th century by local art book publisher, Michelle Dunn Marsh.
In 1915, Cunningham took a series of photos that were scandalous at the time, including shots of her husband posing on Mount Rainier completely naked.
It was a time when women were often portrayed nude in art, but women were not photographing nude men.
Gail Gibson, a Seattle art dealer says, "The role reversal and Cunningham's bold display "of the female gaze was exceptional."
And now through February 6th, Seattle Art Museum has an expansive Cunningham retrospective on display.
It's the first exhibition of her photos in the US in more than 35 years.
