As shopping malls across the country are dying, Seattle's Pacific Place is replacing vacancies with local business.
These days, you won't find J.Crew, BCBG, or Michael Kors at the five-story mall in downtown Seattle.
Instead, shoppers will find art and handmade objects.
In the former Victoria's Secret location, for example, a new black healing and arts space, Wonder of Women, has hung paintings of history-making black women.
And on the shelves of the former Kate Spade store now sit ceramic miniatures, sculptural jewelry, and rustic pottery, all made by local artists whose work is for sale at the locally-owned indie shop Orcas Paley.
These are all part of a pop-up program meant to reinvigorate the dormant mall at bargain prices, allowing some small businesses and nonprofits to take up much more space than they could normally afford.
