(upbeat music) - NOVA Chamber Music Series celebrates the vast chamber music repertoire and Utah's resident artists through concerts, commissions of new works, educational programs, and recordings.
Our guest today, Kimi Kawashima is here with more information about an upcoming concert.
Hi Kimi.
Thanks for being here.
- That's right.
- I'm excited about From Warsaw with Love.
- [Kimi] Yes.
- This is gonna be a wonderful concert.
- Yes, we think so too.
The concert features two of my most favorite composers.
As a pianist, I grew up playing Chopan, Frederic Chopin's music, and he's known primarily as a piano composer, but he did write some incredible chamber music.
And one of them is this Cello Sonata, which was one of the last works that he wrote.
And Matt Johnson and Jason Harding will be playing that on this program.
Another piece that is new to me but is actually was written in 1952, is a piano quintet by another Polish composer, Grazyna Bacewicz.
And it was, it has, I think, the most beautiful slow movement I've ever played, and I can't wait for audiences to hear it as well as the other outer movements.
Yeah.
- That's great - So we'll have this, this concert also features some songs by Chopin, which are very rarely done.
- [Mary] Oh, I haven't heard songs by Chopin.
- Yes.
Yeah, he wrote a few throughout his life, and they usually were inspired by poetry that he just thought, he came across a poem, and he liked it, and he set it to music.
So we'll have that sung by Soprano Jin-Xiang Yu, and it shows a lot of his folk elements, the Polish folk elements, as well as really beautiful piano writing.
- Oh, it sounds like an incredible concert.
- Yeah.
- Okay, where are you performing now?
- We're at Libby Gardner Hall at the University of Utah.
- [Mary] Yeah, it's beautiful concert hall.
- Beautiful.
- You'll sound great, and we get to hear you play.
- Yeah.
- Ah, it's exciting.
Well, I'm so glad that you took over and that you're running NOVA now.
- It's a real privilege, and it's been so fun to just kind of put together these programs and think about the music that features our incredible musicians here in Utah.
- Yeah.
Well, thanks for being here, Kimi, thanks.
- Thank you.
- And if you'd like to know more about that upcoming NOVA concert, it's From Warsaw with Love, October 13th from three to five in the Libby Gardner Concert Hall.
