FIRST WE'RE GOING TO TAKE A LOOK AT SOME OF THE BIGGEST STORIES OF THE WEEK.
NURSES VERSUS MAYO ON NEW REGULATIONS AND PAID FAMILY LEAVE.
TOP CAPITOL STORIES THIS WEEK.
NURSES AT THE BEDSIDE ACT IS GETTING A STRONG RESPONSE AT THE CAPITOL, AFTER MAYO'S POWERFUL OPPOSITION.
>> OVER THE PAST TWO DECADES, NURSES HAVE BEEN RAISING THE ALARM OVER STAFFING LEVELS IN MINNESOTA HOSPITALS.
>> IT FEEL MORE AND MORE LIKE NURSES ARE NUMBERS.
WE ARE REPLACEABLE.
>> I FEEL UNDERVALUED.
I, MANY TIMES, DON'T FEEL RESPECTED WITH OUR OPINIONS.
I DON'T FEEL RESPECTED FOR OUR REQUESTS.
>> IT IS COMPLETELY UNETHICAL FOR MAYO, A NON-PROFIT CORPORATION, TO ATTEMPT TO OVERRIDE DEMOCRACY AND DISRUPT THE LEGISLATIVE PROCESS AT THE LAST MINUTE WITH WHAT ARE ESSENTIALLY BLACKMAIL TACTICS.
>> TO MAYO, I I SAY STAY AND PARTICIPATE AND LEAD.
YEARS AGO, MINNESOTANS COMMITTED TO MAYO AND TO DESK NAICS MEDICAL CENTER, A REGION IN THE STATE.
WE INVESTED RICHLY IN THAT REGION.
>> ANY COMPROMISE THAT WE WOULD ENTER INTO WOULD HAVE TO ACHIEVE THESE BILLS'S GOALS, AND THEY CANNOT INCLUDE THE LANGUAGE THAT MAYO CLINIC HAS PROPOSED.
THAT WOULD GUT THIS BILL.
THAT WOULD EXEMPT EVERY SINGLE HOSPITAL IN MINNESOTA FROM OUR BILL.
THAT IS NOT AN OPTION.
>> Mary: MAYO SAYS THEY'RE DISAPPOINTED WITH THE TIME SPENT ON PRESS CONFERENCES WHEN THEY COULD BE MAKING PROGRESS TOWARDS A SOLUTION.
>> THERE BEING 34 AYES AND 33 NOS, THE THE BILL IS PASSED AND ITS TITLE AGREED TO.
>> Mary: AND THE SENATE PASSED PAID FAMILY LEAVE.
[ Cheers and applause ] >> I WILL REMIND YOU THAT 12 OTHER STATES HAVE DONE THIS SUCCESSFULLY.
ALONG WITH THE REST OF THE WORLD.
AND THOSE STATES HAVE DONE IT WELL.
THIS PROGRAM IS PROVEN TO BE SUCCESSFUL, DURABLE, SUSTAINABLE, AND POPULAR.
>> I BELIEVE PROFOUNDLY IN EXPANDING ACCESS TO PAID FAMILY LEAVE BENEFITS, BUT THE BAD OF THIS BILL OUTWEIGHS THE GOOD.
I WILL BE VOTING NO.
>> PEOPLE ARE GOING TO BE ABLE TO GET PAID TO TAKE THE TIME THEY NEED TO RECOVER FROM ILLNESS, GIVING BIRTH, AND TO BOND WITH THEIR BABY.
THEY NO LONGER HAVE TO CHOOSE BETWEEN HEALING THEIR CAESARIAN OR PAYING THEIR RENT.
>> THIS IS ANOTHER SAD DAY IN MINNESOTA WITH ANOTHER ASSIVE MANDATE COMING TO A LOCATION NEAR YOU.
>> WHERE I WAS DIAGNOSED WITH CANCER EARLIER THIS SESSION AND I LEARNED I NEEDED SURGERY, I KNEW I HAD A GREAT TEAM AND
