I'M PAULA ZAHN ON LOCATION AT POSTER HOUSE ON WEST 23rd STREET IN THE HEART OF CHELSEA.
POSTER HOUSE IS THE FIRST AND ONLY MUSEUM IN THE UNITED STATES DEDICATED EXCLUSIVELY TO THIS MULTI-FACETED MEDIUM.
THE MUSEUM EXPLORES MOMENTS IN HISTORY SHOWING WHAT WE CAN LEARN FROM THE DESIGN, ARTISTRY, PRINTING AND CONTEXT OF GRAPHIC ART OF THE TIME.
IT'S A WELCOMING SPACE FOR ALL THOSE WHO ARE INTERESTED IN DESIGN, ADVERTISING AND YES, EVEN REVOLUTIONARY MOVEMENTS OF ALL KINDS.
THE MUSEUM FEATURES POSTERS FROM ALL OVER THE WORLD DATING BACK TO THEIR DEVELOPMENT IN THE LATE 1800s RIGHT UP TO THEIR CONTEMPORARY YEARS.
EXHIBITIONS TO DATE HAVE FEATURED THE WORK OF LUMINARIES LIKE ALPHONSE MUCHA AND JULIUS CLINGER.
THEY HAVE HIGHLIGHTED IMPORTANT EVENTS SUCH AS THE WOMEN'S MARCH OF 2017 AS WELL AS THE HAND PAINTED FILM POSTERS OF 1990s AGAINA, THE HISTORY OF THE CHINESE ECONOMY THROUGH THE LENS OF ADVERTISING AND A WHOLE LOT MORE.
♪ ♪ CURRENTLY ON VIEW IS AN EXHIBITION WITH AN INTRIGUING TITLE.
EXPERIMENTAL MARRIAGE, WOMEN IN EARLY HOLLYWOOD.
IN THE EARLY DAYS OF THE AMERICAN FILM INDUSTRY IT WAS COMMON FOR WOMEN TO HOLD A VARIETY OF JOBS INCLUDING THOSE OF PRODUCER, DIRECTOR, EDITOR AND WRITER.
THE UNREGULATED STATUS OF THIS GROWING FIELD IN THE 1910s AND '20s MEANT THAT THERE WERE FEWER BARRIERS TO ENTRY.
THIS ALLOWED WOMEN THE OPPORTUNITY TO EXCEL BOTH ON AND OFF CAMERA, ESPECIALLY IN CALIFORNIA, NEW YORK AND NEW JERSEY WHERE NEW CINEMA HUB HIS WERE BEING DEVELOPED.
THIS EXHIBITION FOCUSES ON LOBBY CARDS, ADVERTISING HOLLYWOOD AND EAST COAST MOVIES MADE LARGELY BY WOMEN FOR WOMEN.
TYPICALLY ISSUED IN A SERIES OF EIGHT, LOBBY CARDS FUNCTIONED AS STATIC TRAILERS, FOCUSING ON KEY SCENES WITHIN A FILM IN ORDER TO HIGHLIGHT THE PLOT AND LEAD CHARACTERS.
AS THEIR NAMES SUGGEST, THEY WERE OFTEN DISPLAYED IN THE LOBBIES OF THEATERS, ENTICING VIEWERS TO COME BACK AND SEE THE NEXT FILM, THE MOVIES ADVERTISED HERE COVERED THREE MAIN TOPICS.
WOMEN WITH INFLUENCE, WOMEN WHO WORK AND MARRIAGE AND DIVORCE.
EACH STORY WAS EITHER WRITTEN, DIRECTED, PRODUCED, ART DIRECTED, EDITED OR HAD COSTUMES DESIGNED BY A WOMAN AND WERE AGAIN PROMOTED TO A PREDOMINANTLY FEMALE AUDIENCE.
HOWEVER, AS HOLLYWOOD GREW AND INVESTORS SAW CINEMA AS LARGELY PROFITABLE, STUDIOS BEGAN TO PRODUCING FEWER MOVIES WITH BIGGER BUDGETS AND MORE POPULAR CONTENT.
JOBS WERE NOW DEFINEDED BY UNIONS AND STRICTER OVERSIGHT ALWAYS WITH AN EYE ON THE BOTTOM LINE.
BY THE 1930s, MANY OF THE EARLIEST WOMEN IN THE INDUSTRY WERE BEING FORCED OUT WITH YOUNGER WOMEN READY TO REPLACE THEM.
THE SHIFT IN THE STRUCTURE OF FILM PRODUCTION EFFECTIVELY ELIMINATED WOMEN CREATING AN OLD BOYS NETWORK THAT SOME WOULD SAY PERSISTS TODAY.
THE EXHIBITION WILL BE ON VIEW THROUGH OCTOBER 9th.
>> NOW A VISIT TO FOTOGRAFISKA, NEW YORK, A PHOTOGRAPHY MUSEUM IN THE FLAT IRON DISTRICT.
LOCATED IN THE LANDMARK CHURCH MISSION BUILDING, THE MUSEUM IS THE NEWEST GLOBAL OUTPOST FROM THE STOCKHOLM-BASED DESTINATION FOR PHOTOGRAPHY.
THE BUILDING WAS RENOVATED BY ARCHITECTURE AND INTERIOR DESIGN FIRM CETRA RUDDY TO PROVIDE EVENT SPACE.
A LUTHER G. MOSES PRESERVATION CONSERVANCY FOR ITS WORK ON THIS HISTORIC BUILDING.
THE MUSEUM HAS PRESENTED A WIDE RANGE OF PHOTOGRAPHERS AND SUBJECTS FROM TAWNY CHATMON'S GILDED PORTRAITS OF AFRICAN-AMERICAN WOMEN TO BIBLICAL SCENES FROM ADI NES TO THE PHOTOGRAPHY OF ELLEN VON UNWERTH TO THE PHOTO JOURNALISM OF ANASTASIA TAYLOR LIND AMONG MANY OTHERS.
NYC ARTS VISITED THE MUSEUM IN 2020 TO TALK ABOUT THE BUILDING'S UNIQUE ARCHITECTURAL PAST AS WELL AS ITS FUTURE.
♪ ♪ ♪ >> FOTOGRAFISKA WAS FOUNDED IN 2010 IN STOCKHOLM BY TWO BROTHERS.
THEY'VE HAD OVER 250 EXHIBITIONS AT THIS POINT.
JUNE OF 2010, THEY OPENED THE SECOND LOCATION WHICH WAS IN ESTONIA AND IN DECEMBER OF 2019, NEW YORK OPENED.
FOTOGRAFISKA OCCUPIES A NEW YORK CITY LANDMARK WHICH WAS BUILT IN 1894 AS THE MISSION HOUSE FOR THE EPISCOPALIAN CHURCH THAT WAS DOWN THE STREET.
IT WAS AN UNDERUTILIZED NEW YORK CITY LANDMARK AND ONE OF THE REALLY EXCITING CHALLENGES OF THE PROJECT WAS TO TAKE THIS BEAUTIFUL BUILDING THAT WAS 126 YEARS OLD AND GIVE IT NEW LIFE AND GIVE IT LONGEVITY FOR THE NEXT 200 OR 300 YEARS.
THE ARCHITECTURE IS KNOWN AS NEO FLEMISH, AND IT REFERS BACK TO THE BEAUTIFUL GILD HALLS AND TOWN HALLS OF EUROPE.
THE BUILDING HAS AN AMAZING LIME STONE AND GRANITE FACADE THAT WAS PUNCTUATED BY LARGE ART WINDOWS AND THE RESTORATION, WHEN WE UNEARTHED ALL OF THIS BEAUTIFUL SCULPTURE, WE ALSO PUT VERY DISCREET LINING ON THE OUTSIDE OF THE BUILDING SO THAT YOU COULD SEE FIX FLOORS UP THE AMAZING ORIGINAL DETAILING THAT NO ONE KNEW WAS THERE FOR OVER A HUNDRED YEARS.
AS PEOPLE MOVED THROUGH THE SPACE, WHAT WE REALLY WANTED TO EMPHASIZE WAS DIFFERENT TYPES OF PHOTOGRAPHY.
STREET PHOTOGRAPHY MIXED WITH FASHION PHOTOGRAPHY MIXED WITH LANDSCAPE, FINE ART CONCEPTUAL WORK REALLY HAVE SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE.
ONE OF THE THINGS AT FOTOGRAFISKA STOCKHOLM HAS BEEN THE DESIGN.
WE DECIDED TO ALSO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF HAVING THIS BUILDING AND BLOCKING OUT NATURAL LIGHT TO ACTUALLY USE THAT TO ELEVATE THE WORK.
SO WE USE A LOT OF WALLPAPERS, COLORS, FONTS TO FURTHER EXPLAIN WHAT THESE PHOTOGRAPHS OR WHAT THIS EXPECTITION IS ABOUT.
ELLEN VON UNWERTH IS MOST KNOWN FOR HER FASHION PHOTOGRAPHY AND THE CURATOR WHO WORKED ON THE EXHIBITION CREATED THIS SEVEN DIFFERENT THEMES WITHIN THE EXHIBITION.
THEY EACH HAD THEIR DIFFERENT COLORS AND THE COLORS THAT SHE HAD SHOT OVER HER CAREER OF 30-PLUS YEARS AND MADE THOSE INTO WALLPAPERS AND IT WAS A REALLY FUN AND DYNAMIC WAY OF SHOWING PHOTOGRAPHY AND IT SORT OF STEERS US AWAY FROM THE WHITE CUBE MODEL THAT'S SO TRADITIONAL.
THE ARTIST, COOPER AND GORFER DID THESE EXTENSIVE INTERVIEWS AND FORTPORTRAITS OF MIGRANT WO WHO HAD TO LEAVE THEIR HOME COUNTRIES FOR VARIOUS REASONS USUALLY DUE TO CONFLICT OR VIOLENCE HAPPENING AND ENDED UP LIVING IN SWEDEN.
COOPER AND GORFER DESIGNED THE WALLPAPERS AND WE HUNG THE PHOTOGRAPHS ON TOP OF THEM AND SARA AND NINA REALLY WANTED TO PEOPLE TO WALK INTO THAT SPEES AND FEEL ENCOMPASSED BY THESE INTRICATE SETS THAT THEY HAD CREATED AND THESE PORTRAITS THAT THEY PHOTOGRAPHED.
MARTIN SCHOELLER IS WORKING WITH A NON-PROFIT CALLED WITNESS TO INNOCENCE AND WHAT HE DECIDED TO DO WAS IN HIS SORT OF QUINTESSENTIAL STYLE TAKE THESE UP-CLOSE PORTRAITS OF DEATH ROW EXONOREES AND IT'S A VIDEO INSTALLATION.
HE DECIDED TO ALSO RECORD THEIR STORIES SO YOU'RE HEARING FROM THEIR OWN WORDS WHAT IT WAS LIKE TO BE ARRESTED, GO ON TRIAL, BE CONVICTED AND LIVE ON DEATH ROW FOR CRIMES THAT THEY DID NOT COMMIT.
>> I SAY REAL LOUD, I DON'T WANT TO DIE, AND -- >> AS YOU MOVE THROUGH THE EXHIBITION, WHAT WE ACTUALLY DECIDED TO DO WAS CREATE THIS SENSE OF TIGHT, SORT OF INTIMACY GETTING CLOSER AND CLOSER, YOU KNOW, TO ALMOST WHAT A DEATH ROW CELL LOOKS LIKE SO THAT PEOPLE GET A SENSE OF WHAT THEIR LIVES WERE LIKE WHILE THEY WERE INCARCERATED.
>> WE HAVE SOME LOCAL EXHIBITIONS THAT ARE ON THE OTHER ARTISTS THAT DEAL WITH ISSUES IN NEW YORK AND LARRY FINK IS ONE OF THE MOST FAMOUS PHOTOGRAPHERS OF HIS GENERATION, MAINLY IN STREET PHOTOGRAPHY.
LARRY FINK ACTUALLY CONDITION TACTED US AND SAID I REALLY LOVE YOUR PROGRAM YOU'RE DOING CALLED PHOTOGRAPHERS ON THE FRONT LINES AND THIS WAS WHEN WE REALLY HANDED OVER OUR PLATFORMS TO PHOTOGRAPHERS THAT WERE PHOTOGRAPHING THE BLACK LIVES MATTER MOVEMENT, AND HE SAID, YOU KNOW, THIS WAS REALLY WHAT I WAS DOING THROUGHOUT MY CAREER.
I WOULD LOVE TO GET INVOLVED.
LET'S DO SOMETHING ON THE PROTEST PHOTOGRAPHY THAT I TOOK IN THE '60s.
WORK FROM HARLEM AND WASHINGTON, D.C., WITH VARIOUS STUDENT PROTESTS AND THE YOUTH PROTESTS, THE MARCH ON WASHINGTON.
THAT'S ONE OF THE STRENGTH OF FOTOGRAFISKA IS THAT WE CAN RESPOND PRETTY QUICKLY TO RELEVANT ISSUES AND STAY VERY CURRENT.

DURING THE PANDEMIC WE DID TRANSITION A LOT OF OUR PROGRAMMING ONLINE.
A LOT OF LIVESTREAMING EVENTS.
OUR FAMILY PROGRAMMING THAT USED TO TAKE PLACE INSIDE THE BUILDING, WE'VE MOVED IT OUTSIDE WHEN WE CAN.
THIS IS REALLY GOING TO CHANGE THE WAY PEOPLE EXPERIENCE A MUSEUM OR EXPERIENCE FOTOGRAFISKA SPECIFICALLY.
I THINK WHAT'S REALLY IMPORTANT TO FOTOGRAFISKA IS BEING RELEVANT AND RESPONDING QUICKLY TO WHAT'S GOING ON IN THE WORLD.
WE REALLY WANT PEOPLE TO COME TO FOTOGRAFISKA AND SEE THE SOCIAL RELEVANCE IN THE ART WORK THAT'S ON DISPLAY.

IT'S MEANT TO BE FANTASTICAL AND A METAPHOR FOR HOW CULTURES COME ♪ ♪ >> THESE ARTISTS ARE LOOKING AT THEIR OWN CULTURES, THEIR BACKGROUNDS, THEIR FAMILIES AS WELL AS HOW CULTURES BOTH COME TOGETHER AND DIFFER THROUGHOUT THE ♪ ♪ >> THESE WORKS ARE BY THE ARTIST NICK CAVE WHO PROBABLY IS THE BEST KNOWN PRAKT IGSZER WITH THE IN RESPOND TO THE ROD KINNEL ARE KING, HE MADE A SUIT OUT OF TWIGS THAT HE DESCRIBEDA AN ARMOR AGAINst RUG AND THE TWIGS MADE A LOT MOVE IT SHOW THAT HE WAS PRESS EVENT AND ALSO TO WARD OFF DANGER.

IT ALL FOCUSES ON AN ALTER EGO WHO SHE CALLS SOPHIE.
IN THE EARLIEST WORK, SOPHIE ALWAYSER WITH A BLUE UNIFORM, AS A MAID OR A NANNY'S -- OVER TIME THAT UNIFORM HAS GONE FROM BLUE TO PURPLE TO RED WHICH SYMBOL AND IT SHOWS SOPHIE AS A POWERFUL, RATHER FRIGHTENING FIGURE AND ONE WHO HAS GONE THROUGH THIS ENORMOUS JOURNEY.
THE PHENOMENON OF ARTISTS USING GARMENTS IN THEIR PRACTICE IS INTERNATIONAL.
IT HAPPENS LITERALLY ALL OVER THE WORLD BECAUSE THERE ARE DIFFERENT DRESS TRADITIONS ALL OVER THE WORLD THAT ARTISTS COMMENT ON AND ANALYZE AND THINK ABOUT IN THEIR WORK.
