FOUNDED IN 1906, THE MORGAN NOW SERVES AS A MUSEUM, INDEPENDENT RESEARCH LIBRARY, MUSIC VENUE, ARCHITECTURAL LANDMARK, AND HISTORIC SITE.
THE MORGAN OFFERS VISITORS CLOSE ENCOUNTERS WITH GREAT WORKS OF ACCOMPLISHMENT.

HER BEQUEST TO THE MORGAN UPON HER PASSING BUILDS ON JPMORGAN'S ORIGINAL HOLDINGS AND COMPLIMENTS OTHER IMPORTANT COLLECTIONS.
THE SUBJECT MATTER AMONG THE BOOKS INCLUDES POLITICS, RELIGION, COURT ENTERTAINMENTS, MUSIC, AND MILITARY STRATEGY.
WRIGHTSMAN RECOGNIZED THE IMPORTANT ROLE THAT BOOK BINDINGS PLAYED IN THE CULTURAL LIFE OF THE TIME.
THE ELABORATELY EMBELLISHED BINDS WITH AOMORI BINDS SIGNAL THE WEALTH, TASTE AND LEARNING OF TIGHTLED BIBLIOFILES.
MANY ARE WORKS IN THEIR OWN RIGHT AND WERE DISPLAYED IN HER STATELY NEW YORK APARTMENT ALONG WITH DECORATIVE ARTS AND FURNITURE OF THE SAME PERIOD.
THE EXHIBITION WILL BE ON VIEW THROUGH JANUARY 31, 2022.
ON OUR PROGRAM TONIGHT, WE'LL VISIT PHOTOGRAPHISK NEW YORK, LOCATED IN THE LANDMARK CHURCH MISSION'S HOUSE, THE MUSEUM IS THE NEWEST GLOBAL OUTPOST FROM THE STOCKHOLM-BASED DESTINATION FOR PHOTOGRAPHY.
THE BUILDING WAS RENOVATED BY ARCHITECTURE AND INTERIOR DESIGN FIRM RUDDY TO PROVIDE A MIX OF COMMERCIAL, GALLERY, AND EVENT SPACE.
THE FIRM RECENTLY WON A LUCY G. MOSES AWARD FROM THE LANDMARK CONSERVANCY FOR ITS WORK ON THIS HISTORIC BUILDING.
THE MUSEUM PRESENTS A CONSTANTLY ROTATING SET OF EXHIBITIONS FEATURING A DIVERSE RANGE OF PHOTOGRAPHERS AND TIMELY SUBJECTS IN IMMERSIVE SETTINGS.
AMONG THE EXHIBITIONS ON VIEW IS EXPRESSIONS OF LIFE, CELEBRATING THE WORK OF PHOTOJOURNALIST AND FILMMAKER RUTH ORKIN.
HER LANDMARK PHOTOS WERE TAKEN ACROSS HOLLYWOOD, NEW YORK CITY, ISRAEL, AND ITALY.
SHE WAS A MASTER AT CAPTURING BOTH WARMTH AND BOLDNESS FROM BEHIND THE CAMERA.
"NYC ARTS" VISITED TO DISCUSS THE BUILDING'S UNIQUE ARCHITECTURAL PAST AND ITS FUTURE.
>> PHOTOGRAPHISKA WAS FOUNDED IN 2010 IN STOCKHOLM BY TWO BROTHERS.
THEY'VE HAD OVER 250 EXHIBITIONS AT THIS POINT.
JUNE OF 2010, THEY OPENED THE SECOND LOCATION, WHICH IS ACTUALLY IN TALON, ESTONIA.
AND IN DECEMBER OF 2019, NEW YORK OPENED.
>> PHOTOGRAPHISK A-OKAY PIES A NEW YORK CITY LANDMARK WHICH WAS BUILT IN 195 55 AS THE MISSION HOUSE.
IT WAS AN UNDERUTILIZED NEW YORK CITY LANDMARK, AND ONE OF THE REALLY EXCITING CHALLENGES OF THE PRODUCT WAS TO TAKE THIS BEAUTIFUL BUILDING THAT WAS 126 YEARS OLD AND GIVE IT NEW LIFE AND GIVE IT LONGEVITY FOR THE NEXT TWO OR 300 YEARS.
THE ARCHITECTURE IS KNOWN AS NEO FLEMISH, AND IT REFERS BACK TO THE BEAUTIFUL GUILD HALLS AND TOWN HALLS OF EUROPE IN THE 15th AND 16th CENTURIES.
IT HAS A FACADE PUNCTUATED BY LARGE WINDOWS.
IN THE RESTORATION, WHEN WE UNEARTHED ALL OF THIS BEAUTIFUL SCULPTURE, WE ALSO PUT VERY DISCREET LIGHT ON THE OUTSIDE OF THE BUILDING SO THAT YOU COULD SEE SIX FLOORS UP THE AMAZING ORIGINAL DETAILING THAT NO ONE KNEW WAS THERE FOR OVER 100 YEARS.
AS PEOPLE MOVE THROUGH THIS SPACE, WHAT WE REALLY WANTED TO EMPHASIZE IS DIFFERENT TYPES OF PHOTOGRAPHY.
STREET PHOTOGRAPHY MIXED WITH FAX PHOTOGRAPHY MIXED WITH LANDSCAPE, FINE ART CONCEPTUAL WORK.
REALLY HAVE SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE.
ONE OF THE THINGS PHOTOGRAPHISKA STOCKHOLM HAS BEEN REALLY SUCCESSFUL WITH IS DESIGN.
WE'VE DECIDED TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF HAVING THIS BUILDING AND BLOCKING OUT NATURAL LIGHT TO USE THAT TO ELEVATE THE WORK.
SO WE USE A LOT OF WALLPAPERS, COLORS, FONTS TO FURTHER EXPLAIN WHY THESE PHOTOGRAPHS OR WHAT THIS EXHIBITION IS ABOUT.
ELLEN VON ENWORTH IS MOST WIDELY KNOWN FOR HER FASHION PHOTOGRAPHY.
SHE AND NADINE BARTH, THE CURATOR THAT WORKED ON THIS EXHIBITION CREATED THESE SEVEN DIFFERENT THEMES WITHIN THE EXHIBITION.
THEY EACH HAD THEIR DIFFERENT COLORS.
AND THESE COVERS SHE HAD SHOT OVER HER CAREER OF 30 PLUS YEARS AND MADE THOSE INTO WALLPAPERS.
IT IS A REALLY FUN AND DYNAMIC WAY I THINK OF SHOWING PHOTOGRAPHY.
AND IT SORT OF STEERS US AWAY FROM THE WHITE CUBE MODEL THAT IS SO TRADITIONAL.
THE ARTIST DID THESE EXTENSIVE INTERVIEWS AND PORTRAITS OF MIGRANT WOMEN WHO HAD TO LEAVE THEIR HOME COUNTRIES FOR VARIOUS REASONS.
USUALLY DUE TO SOME SORT OF CONFLICT OR VIOLENCE HAPPENING.
AND ENDED UP LIVING IN SWEDEN.
COOPEREN ACTUALLY DESIGNED THE WALL PARTY.
THEY REALLY WANTED PEOPLE TO WALK INTO THE SPACE AND FEEL ENCOMPASSED BY THESE INTRICATE SETS THEY HAD CREATED AND THESE PORTRAITS THAT THEY PHOTOGRAPHED.
MARTIN SHULER IS WORKING WITH A NONPROFIT CALLED WITNESS TO INNOCENCE.
AND WHAT HE DECIDED TO DO WAS IN HIS SORT OF QUINTESSENTIAL STYLE TAKE THESE UP-CLOSE PORTRAITS OF DEATH ROW EXONOREES, BUT HE ACTUALLY FILMED THE SITTERS, SO THEY'RE SLIGHTLY MOVING.
IT'S A VIDEO INSTALLATION.
HE DECIDED TO ALSO RECORD THEIR STORIES.
SO YOU'RE HEARING FROM THEIR OWN WORDS WHAT IT WAS LIKE TO BE ARRESTED, GO ON TRIAL, BE CONVICTED AND LIVE ON DEATH ROW FOR CRIMES THAT THEY DID NOT COMMIT.
>> AND SAY NOW, I DON'T WANT TO DIE.
>> AS YOU MOVE THROUGH THE EXHIBITION, WHAT WE ACTUALLY DECIDED TO DO WAS CREATE THE SENSE OF TIGHT SORT OF INTIMACY, GETTING EVEN CLOSER AND CLOSER, YOU KNOW, TO ALMOST WHAT A DEATH ROW CELL LOOKS LIKE.
SO THAT PEOPLE REALLY GOT A SENSE OF WHAT THEIR LIVES WERE LIKE WHILE THEY WERE INCARCERATED.
WE HAVE SOME LOCAL EXHIBITIONS THAT DON'T TOUR TO THE OTHER LOCATIONS.
SPECIFIC ARTISTS THAT ARE DEALING WITH VERY RELEVANT ISSUES TO NEW YORK OR TO AMERICA.
LARRY FINK IS ONE OF THE MOST FAMOUS PHOTOGRAPHERS OF HIS GENERATION, MAINLY IN STREET PHOTOGRAPHY.
LARRY FINK ACTUALLY CONTACTED US AND SAID I REALLY LOVE YOUR PROGRAM THAT YOU'RE DOING CALLED PHOTOGRAPHERS ON THE FRONT LINES.
AND THIS IS WHEN WE REALLY HANDED OVER OUR PLATFORMS TO PHOTOGRAPHERS THAT WERE PHOTOGRAPHING THE BLACK LIVES MATTER MOVEMENT.
AND HE SAID, YOU KNOW, THIS IS REALLY WHAT I WAS DOING THROUGHOUT MY CAREER.
I WOULD LOVE TO GET INVOLVED.

WORKED FROM HARLEM AND WASHINGTON, D.C. WITH VARIOUS STUDENT PROTESTS, YOUTH PROTESTS, THE MARCH ON WASHINGTON.
THAT'S ONE OF THE STRENGTHS OF PHOTOGRAPHISKA IS WE CAN RESPOND PRETTY QUICKLY TO RELEVANT ISSUES AND STAY VERY CURRENT.
NAEEM GREEN IS ANOTHER GOOD EXAMPLE.
SHE IS A BROOKLYN-BASED ARTIST AND ALL OF HER PHOTOGRAPHS ARE OF THE LGBTQ COMMUNITY, MOSTLY PEOPLE OF COLOR.
MORE OF A CELEBRATION.
THESE VERY SORT OF INTIMATE AND CAREFULLY CRAFTED PHOTOGRAPHS.
OUR WHOLE CONCEPT IS REALLY CATERING TO THE NEW WAY THAT WE FEEL THAT PEOPLE WANT TO VISIT MUSEUMS WHERE IT'S A LITTLE BIT MORE EXPERIENTIAL, MORE INTERACTIVE.
ON THE SIXTH FLOOR WE DO A LOT OF EVENTS AND PROGRAMING, ARTIST TALKS, COSTUME PARTIES.
WE'VE DONE PERFORMANCE PIECES, CONCERTS.
KIND OF PULLING FROM ALL THESE DIFFERENT AREAS, MAKE IT A LAYERED EXPERIENCE.
DURING THE PANDEMIC, WE DID TRANSITION A LOT OF OUR PROGRAMING ONLINE.
A LOT OF LIVE STREAMING EVENTS.
OUR FAMILY PROGRAMING THAT USED TO TAKE PLACE INSIDE THE BUILDING, WE'VE MOVED IT OUTSIDE WHEN WE CAN.
THIS IS REALLY GOING TO CHANGE THE WAY PEOPLE EXPERIENCE A MUSEUM OR EXPERIENCE PHOTOGRAPHISKA SPECIFICALLY.
I THINK WHAT'S REALLY IMPORTANT TO PHOTOGRAPHISKA IS BEING RELEVANT AND RESPONDING QUICKLY TO WHAT'S GOING ON IN THE WORLD.
WE REALLY WANT PEOPLE TO COME TO PHOTOGRAPHISKA AND SEE THAT SOCIAL RELEVANCE IN THE ARTWORK THAT'S ON DISPLAY.

NOT JUST ANY CARS, BUT SOME OF THE MOST INFLUENTIAL AND INNOVATIVE VEHICLES OF THE 20th CENTURY.
THAT IS THE SUBJECT OF MOMA'S EXHIBITION OUAUTOMANIA.
THE SHOW TAKES ITS NAME FROM AUTOMANIA 2000, AN OSCAR NOMINATED FILM FROM 1963.
THE FILM SETS THE TONE FOR THE EXHIBITION AS NOT SIMPLY A LOVE LETTER TO THESE ROLLING SCULPTURES, BUT AS AN EXPLORATION OF HOW THE CAR HAS SHAPED OUR SOCIETY FOR BETTER OR FOR WORSE.
>> WHAT MAKES AN AUTOMOBILE A WORK OF ART?
THIS WAS A QUESTION THAT WAS POSED IN 1951.
AND THE FIRST CAR EXHIBITION AT AN ART MUSEUM, WHICH WAS HERE AT MOMA, AN EXHIBITION CALLED EIGHT AUTOMOBILES, WHICH LOOKED AT CARS AS ESSENTIALLY SCULPTURAL FORMS.
THE CURATOR OF THE SHOW REFERRED THEM AS HOLLOW ROLLING SCULPTURE.
SO THE MUSEUM HAS HAD A HISTORY OF TRYING TO ENGAGE MODERN DESIGN AND THE PUBLIC IN A VERY CRITICAL, THOUGHT-PROVOKING MANNER.
SO FOR CARS, IT'S THE GREATEST EXAMPLE OF THAT.
IT'S THE SCULPTURE, INDUSTRY, ENGINEERING, ALL OF THESE THINGS WRAPPED INTO ONE.
THE EXHIBITION TAKES ITS NAME FROM A 1963 BRITISH ANIMATED FILM CALLED AUTOMANIA 2000.
AND IT USES SATIRE TO EXAMINE CONSUMER CULTURE, MASS PRODUCTION, AND CAR FANATICS.
AND THE FILM CENTERS AROUND THE SCIENTIST FIGURE WHO CAN SOLVE EVERY PROBLEM, MEET EVERY MARKETING NEED AND LOSES CONTROL OF HIS CREATION.
AND PRETTY SOON YOU SEE CARS BURYING THE WORLD, COVERING THE EMPIRE STATE BUILDING AND THE U.S. CAPITOL.
THERE IS EVEN A DRONE DELIVERY AND FOOD.
SO IT'S EERILY PRESCIENT FOR 1963.
AND IN THE END, THE WORLD IS DESTROYED BY CARS.
I THINK YOU CAN'T REALLY SUSTAIN A GOOD CRITIQUE OF CAR CULTURE UNLESS YOU FIRST REALLY SHOW US WHY CARS ARE SO SEDUCTIVE.
THEY HAVE A MAGNETIC POWER TO US.
AND I THINK GREAT ART DOES THAT THE JAGUAR E TYPE FROM 1963 IS OFTEN WHAT HOOKS PEOPLE WHEN THEY COME INTO THIS GALLERY.
IT'S A CONVERTIBLE.
IT'S INCREDIBLE DEEP PURPLE COLLAR, AND IT'S AN UNDENIABLY SEXY CAR.
BUT KIND OF BELIES ITS VERY MATHEMATICAL AND ANALYTICAL ORIGINS.

ENZO FERRARI AND THE COMPANY HE CREATED LOOMS REALLY LARGELY IN RACING HISTORY, AND THE MODEL 641 REPRESENTS ONE OF THE PINNACLES OF THEIR ACHIEVEMENT.
CITRON DEAS IS MAKING ITS DEBUT.
IT IS A RELATIVELY RECENT ACQUISITION.
FROM AN AESTHETIC STANDPOINT, IT'S AN INCREDIBLY BEAUTIFUL CAR, ESPECIALLY WHEN COMPARED TO WHAT WAS MORE COMMON AT THAT TIME IN THE 1950s, THESE GIGANTIC AMERICAN CADILLACS.
IT LOOKS LIKE A CAR FROM THE FUTURE.
AND IN ONE PARIS AUTO SHOW, IT WAS SHOWN STANDING UP LIKE A ROCK SHIP TAKING OFF.
THE DESIGNER OF THE DEAS HAD A BACKGROUND IN SCULPTURE.
I THINK THAT COMES ACROSS VERY STRONGLY IN THE BODY OF THE DEAS.
ONE OF THE THINGS THAT MAKES THE DEAS SO INCREDIBLE IS ITS SUSPENSION SYSTEM THAT IS SELF-LEVELING.
SO YOU CAN BE DRIVING ALONG THE HIGHWAY AND HAVE A BLOWOUT OF A TIRE, AND IT KEEPS ITSELF LEVEL.
IN THE 1960s, FRANCE WAS WRACKED BY A LOT OF INTERNAL CONFLICT AND THERE WAS AN ASSASSINATION ATTEMPT ON CHARLES de GAULLE.
HIS DEAS WAS RIDDLED WITH BULLETS.
TWO OF HIS TIRES WAS SHOT OUT AND STILL IT WAS ABLE TO ESCAPE.
♪ WHEN VIEWERS COME TO THE EXHIBITION, THERE IS A LOT TO DELIGHT IN.
BUT ALSO WE HOPE THAT PEOPLE KIND OF RETHINK THESE THINGS.
THE TITLE AUTOMANIA IMPLIES CARS MAKE US CRAZY.
AND THAT'S FUN, AND WE ALL LOVE BEING IN A CAR AND BEING A LITTLE BIT CRAZY.
BUT THAT CRAZINESS COMES WITH A PRICE.
AND WE HOPE PEOPLE WILL LEAVE THINKING ABOUT WHAT THAT PRICE MEANS AND IS IT WORTH IT.

ITS COLLECTION INCLUDES MORE THAN 8,000 WORKS OF ART FROM FOUR CENTURIES REPRESENTING NEARLY EVERY CONTINENT.

AROUND 16 YEARS AGO WHEN HE RETURNED TO NEW ORLEANS WITH HIS FAMILY, HE BOUGHT A HOUSE THAT HAD BEEN A ROOMING HOUSE FOR SINGLE MALE MUSICIANS RUN BY A WOMAN NAMED MOTHER SISTER.
AND HE BOUGHT THIS ROOMING HOUSE, BUT SHORTLY AFTER HE MOVED IN, NEW ORLEANS EXPERIENCED THE ENORMOUS HEARTBREAKING DEVASTATION OF HURRICANE KATRINA.
JEANMAR SELL ST. JOCK'S HOME WAS DESTROYED.
AND RATHER THAN GIVING INTO DESPAIR, HE GATHERED THE DETRITUS OF HIS HOME AND STARTED FASHIONING WHAT HE CALLS WOODEN QUILTS, PAYING HOMAGE TO HIS GREAT GRANDFATHER, WHO WAS A HOODOO MAN AND A JUNK COLLECTOR, AND HIS GREAT-GRANDMOTHER, WHO WAS A QUILT MAKER.
IF YOU LOOK CLOSELY AT THE PIECES OF WOOD, THEY ARE STUDDED WITH NAILS AND ALL THE OTHER KINDS OF ARCHITECTURAL AND CONSTRUCTION ELEMENTS THAT YOU WOULD SEE IN A HOME.
HE USES HOUSE PAINT TO PAINT THESE PIECES OF WOOD.
BUT HE WAS ALWAYS MINDFUL OF THE PALETTE OF HIS GREAT-GRANDMOTHER AND HER STRIP QUILTS.
WHEN I ASKED HIM ABOUT THE PROCESS THAT HE USES IN COLORING AND MAKING AND CONSTRUCTING HIS WOODEN QUILTS, HE SAID, WELL, LIKE ANY GOOD CREOLE COOK, THE SECRET IS IN THE ROUX.
BUT I AIN'T TELLING YOU ALL WHAT THAT IS.
J JEAN-MARCEL HAS EMBEDDED TWO SELF-PORTRAITS AMONG THE PIECES OF WOOD.
AND IT SHOWS HIM IN HIS GUISE AS A SPIRITUAL LEADER, PRACTICING WHAT HE CALLS FOLK MAGIC AS THE DESCENDANT OF A HOODOO MAN.
THE TITLE OF THIS PIECE "MOTHER SISTER MAY HAVE SAT IN THAT CHAIR WHEN SHE LIVED IN THIS HOUSE BEFORE ME," IT'S REFERRING TO MOTHER SISTER, WHO RAN THE BOARDING HOME FOR SINGLE MUSICIANS.
AND THERE ARE TWO SIDES THAT FASHION A CHAIR.
ONE IS UPRIGHT AND ONE IS DOWN.
SO HE HAS IN FACT INSTILLED PHYSICAL REMAINS OF HER PRESENCE IN HIS HOME INTO THIS PIECE THAT HE HAS CREATED TO PAY HOMAGE TO HIS ANCESTORS AND TO HIS OWN LOUISIANA HISTORY AND TO THE SUFFERING OF THOSE WHO SURVIVED HURRICANE KATRINA IN HIS TREMAINE NEIGHBORHOOD OF NEW ORLEANS.

>> ONE OF THE GREAT HIGHLIGHTS IN THE NEW GALLERY IS A PAIR OF FOLDING SCREENS THAT DATE FROM ABOUT 1610.
THEY HAVE LARGELY GOLD BACKGROUNDS, WHICH WOULD HAVE HELPED TO REFLECT LIGHT IN THE DARK INTERIOR OF THE CASTLE AND MADE THE ROOM SORT OF MORE WARM AND GLOWING.
