Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorshiptoday a Congressional Delegation led by Alexandria ocasio-cortez and including New Jersey's Rob Menendez toured the Roosevelt Hotel in Midtown New York that's been housing migrants arriving in the city last summer in what was largely seen as a political stunt Republican Governor Greg Abbott of Texas began bussing migrants to New York City many are now seeking Asylum and housing the tens of thousands of migrants is costing the city billions of dollars and there is talk now of relocating some to Atlantic City it is a divisive issue and asking your correspondent Brenda Flanagan reports the delegation after touring the hotel was met with angry protesters a Congressional Delegation emerged from touring the migrant shelter at Manhattan's Roosevelt Hotel to address reporters representatives from several States invited to see for themselves how New York's coping with a crisis but politicians ran headlong into protesters whose angry shouts all but drowned out the conversation foreign New York Congressman Adriano espayat stood with fellow Democrats trying to speak over the protesters about what they saw inside as migrant families walked past well we saw a man with children families people that want to work people that are fleeing violence people that are fleeing environmental disasters we see so many stories heartbreaking stories serious consensus here across geography and States on increased Federal resources to cities and municipalities dealing with this issue representative Alexandria ocasio-cortez says the federal government should also give migrants faster access to working papers so they can find jobs and support themselves she also wants temporary protected status for Venezuelans who have sought Asylum the unsolved dilemma where to place tens of thousands who've been bused here often with no no family New Jersey Congressman Rob Menendez toured the hotel it's about 25 percent of the people that are being crossed this year are making their way to another destination outside of New York City it's obviously a complicated process given sort of the dynamic of our process here of our broken immigration system and they're trying to make it work as best as they can given the difficulties that we have here both at a local state federal level mayor Eric Adams has claimed the city's already spent two billion dollars housing migrants and could spend another 5 billion this year this issue will destroy New York City as the shouts got louder the delegation quickly dispersed protesters warned of dire consequences if the flood of migrants continues this isn't Invasion on America and you know it you all have an agenda and you all need to get the [ ó_ó_ ] out with your agenda there's gonna be a line from here all the way to South America it's never going to end we need to close the border transporting migrants to Federal properties in New Jersey like Atlantic City International Airport sparked a firestorm of local protest Governor Murphy has stated the scale of this issue is quote Beyond us one migrant outside the hotel spoke to reporters I don't want to stay here you want to get a work permit you want to get a job now work authorization is what you're going to hear about a lot I do believe that's an important part of it with any of these issues Congress needs to act and at the end of the day there's an immense amount of passing the buck but Congress needs to act the news conference broke up with no resolutions and no political answers just a lot of shouting in Manhattan I'm Brenda Flanagan NJ Spotlight news
