(bright music) - Oaxaca en Utah organizes a range of activities and events promoting Oaxacan culture.
It includes workshops, cultural festivals, and outreach.
Norma and Mayah Carver are here with news about their upcoming festival.
Hello, both.
Welcome back.
So, let's start with you Norma.
I mean, I hope people are enjoying everything you brought to show us.
Why did you start Oaxaca en Utah?
- Oaxaca en Utah started, because I was missing my family.
I was missing the wonderful food from Oaxaca and I was missing everything in Oaxaca.
So, that's why Oaxaca en Utah started to share and celebrate the beautiful culture of the eight regions of Oaxaca.
- That's great.
And I know this big festival coming up, the Guelaguetza, which literally means offering or a gift, which you've brought for us today.
So, tell me about the festival, whichever one of you wants to.
- So, La Guelaguetza is an offering, like you said.
And so, today we bring some bread, we bring a dress to show you, we bring some tamales to share, and we bring our mono de calenda dummy.
- She's beautiful.
- Yes.
And so, La Guelaguetza brings everyone together.
We have dances, we have music, and we have so much more.
Some beautiful performances that we're gonna have this year.
- And you actually, teach dancing for Oaxaca en Utah?
- So, this year we're gonna have a mini Guelaguetza in the morning.
So, the first few hours of the Guelaguetza.
So, around two hours we're gonna be having our mini Guelaguetza with all the little kids and the girls.
- Wonderful, wonderful.
And Norma then, don't we get to see a lot of the mono de calenda?
- Yes.
So, this year we are very grateful for Lunita or Luna.
She's our teacher of this, you know, of this mono de calenda.
And we're gonna have many other surprises.
But dummy is gonna be there with other friends that they're coming this year.
- Okay, and people should know how tall she is.
Anyway, thank you so much for being here, and thank you for the gifts.
Thank you.
- Thank you so much.
- And if you'd like to know more about that big Guelaguetza Festival of Oaxaca en Utah, it's July 20th from noon to 10:00 pm at Heritage Park in Kaysville, Utah.
