Good evening everybody.
I'm Toby Nelson, joined on the broadcast by Julie EU Sinclair and we welcome you to Class B Championship night here in Bangor, the Old Town Coyotes and the Oceanside Mariners and Julie, we talked about it here before we got on the air.
There's something about state championship night, isn't - There?
There really is.
It's a packed house here, Toby.
And I could tell you whether you're tuning in from home or you're in a seat here, we're excited to see who's gonna get this gold ball - And we're excited because we have two quality basketball clubs playing in this championship game.
Oceanside coming in here with no losses in the season and the old town coyotes with just two of them.
- You're exactly right.
It's a, it's gonna be a tough one.
- Let's take a look at the old 10.
The Oceanside Mariners, they're the visiting club here tonight.
They bring a quality ball club with a team that won the state championship a couple of years ago and they bring a big center back with 'em as well.
Six - Three.
Bailey Breen is one of the most dominant players in the state right now.
She averaged about 31 points a game coming into this tournament, - So we look forward to seeing them in action tonight.
The Oceanside Mariners, again, the traveling club.
They played all of their tournament games so far in the Portland down at the expo.
We'll send it over to the floor right now.
The third member of our broadcast crew is Jim Baines.
- Alright.
All right.
Thank you very much Chair.
Okay Coach Reen, this building has been good to you before.
You must be thrilled to get back here again.
- Yeah, it's exciting for all the girls.
You know that we got upset last year and the, that really motivated the girls and they've done a great job working hard to get back to this point.
- Tell us about the week of practice getting ready for Old Town here.
- It's, we've just gotten after it, you know, we've studied 'em a lot, we've made some adjustments to what we're trying to do against them and you know, it's gonna come down to who comes out executes.
They got a great ball club too, - Right?
Areas of concern.
The biggest ones there for all time.
What do you think?
- Well, Sage plays like she did last game.
That's a, that's a huge concern.
No, I mean Sage, Emerson, the Degrass girl played really well.
Brown, they all stepped up and played great so you know, we're gonna have to do a good job defensively, make our rotations and and try and limit any good looks they get.
Alright, - Good luck.
Thanks for joining us.
Alright, thank you.
Alright, we'll talk to Coach Richard in just a minute.
- Okay Jim, thanks.
Thanks very much.
Talking with Coach Matt Breen.
We'll get the old town side of the story here in just a moment, but they come in here off a win over Ellsworth a team they lost to twice during the season.
They played a phenomenal regional final game - They did.
Old Town is led by four seniors with the we instead of me mentality and Sage Evans had an incredible performance 24 points per game to knock off an undefeated team.
Can they do it again tonight?
That's right, they - Already did it in the regional final.
They'll have to do it here in the state final and for Old Town it's their first championship game since 1980 so you have to go back some 44 years.
They were, they were in class A the last time they played in the state championship.
We've seen one side, we need the other side.
Jim Bain standing by with Heather Richards Jim.
- Alright.
Coach Richards is speaking of someone who has family working in Old Town.
We know the whole place is a buzz right now with what you pulled off against Ellsworth last week.
- Yeah, we've had a lot of community support.
They've reached out to the girls, very proud of them.
Alright, - Now when scouting Oceanside though, what are your biggest areas of concern here?
- They're tall so we gotta keep 'em off the boards.
We need to control tempo when we need to take care of the ball.
- And when you look at OSHA site, can you compare 'em with anybody else you played against this year?
- Not really because we haven't seen the height that they have so we're gonna have to, we're gonna have our hands full with their height.
Okay, - Very good.
Oh, thank you very much for joining us.
Okay, back to you.
- The Road to Gold here Julie?
- Yes, on the Ocean side Mariners, they have a season record of 18 and oh averaging 74 points a game.
They're allowing about 33 points a game going in as number one tournament rank with wins over Biddeford Lake region, spruce Mountain and this is their, their last gold ball actually is in 2022 for the Old Town coyote side.
They're coming in with a season record of 16 and two averaging 54 points a game allowing about 33 points a game.
Had a North Rank two coming into the playoffs with winds over M-C-I-M-D-I and Ellsworth and this is their first attempt at the - Gold ball trying to go after that gold ball.
It's been elusive for the Old Town coyotes and we look forward to championship basketball here on Maine Public Television.
Bob Betham is the public address announcer here with the cross center for our first game and we'll send it over to him right now.
- Good evening ladies and gentlemen.

Thank you.
Please remain standing as the Old Town High school band on the direction of Jay Baines honors our country with the plane of our national anthem.
- Well we've had the starting lineups, the National anthem and Julie this place is rocking tonight.
A big crowd on hand here at the Cross Insurance Center.
- It is the atmosphere.
I don't even know if others know other states.
It's not quite like this, it's really something Special - Coach is going through their final instruction.
You see Matt Breen, the coach of the Oceanside Mariners, they won a state championship a couple of years ago knocking off Herman in a very close contest here at the cross center.
So the cross center's been actually very kind to them here over the years - It has.
And on the other hand you got Old Town who for a couple of years have been wanting to get in and they finally got over that hump and I'm sure the adrenaline is kicking for both - Teams.
Yeah, for two straight years, old Town was the number one seed and got knocked out in the regional championship game.
Oceanside last year lost a Spruce Mountain in the regional final.
The Southern regional final had a chance to beat them and Old Town extracting some demons last week as well as they knocked off Ellsworth the team that beat them twice during the regular season.
Nick Daigle is our center official.
He'll toss it up.
George a OB and Gail per the other officials tonight in this class C, the Class B Final Boys game coming up following this one here on the state of the main public television, sit back and relax.
Gonna be a good one here tonight as the opening kit for this one Controlled by the Old town Coyotes.
They'll have it in the front court, the home team, the home whites for the coyotes with the green and black trim Oceanside, the traveling blues here tonight from the Cross Insurance Center.
Here's Sage Evans who was the MVP of the Class B tournament.
Pull up pop around the rim and off.
No good rebound taken off by Oceanside.
- Old town coming out aggressive looking for their shot.
That was one of the key factors in their win last week.
- This is Aubrey Hos.
Hos now with Lamb looking for Breen posting up inside on Evans.
That's gonna be a really good matchup.
It goes inside the Breen to catch off the glass end.
- I can't say enough.
The sets Matt Breen has put in to put Bailey Breen in in tough situations.
You front her, that's what they do.
They go high low and you can't really front in those situations but you get caught up - Mariners' off to a two nothing lead, three point try on the way that one's good and the first points of the ball game for Old Town belonged to McKayla Emerson.
We - Talked about Sage emons but we have to also talk about Emerson.
She's been a key factor in them going as deep as they have in this tournament.
- Old town on top three, two inside the debris knock away goes out of bounds.
They were able to front her, put somebody behind, kinda sandwich her in the middle and the ball goes out of bounds.
- And you could see in the replay here the the plan is to front but there definitely has to be help side so I'm sure Old Town has a plan for who they're gonna play off from in this game - Again, Taylor Loing out with an injury.
She's been a starter all year long, was injured before the regional final and the coyotes have had some great play off the bench.
This is Degrass in the lane, the floater off the rim.
Can't get it to go.
Bre pulls it down.
Boost front court for Oceanside on the drive.
Who to the glass shot no good, the rebound, the Putback up and in Sophia Daggett with a bucket.
- Sophia Daggett.
She loves to rebound and she's great when the rotation defense is a little bit off, she's there to get the open rebounds.
- Mariner's back on top four three early moment of this class B final.
The floater goes from McKayla Emerson.
- I'd say the senior mindset hasn't cooled off.
They definitely are looking to attack and playing calm and cool so far.
- Hos on Emerson, that's a good guard matchup there for both these clubs.
So you look at Evans on Breen, Hoss and Emerson inside the Breen and Chief's fowl.
So again, both these clubs have great matchups here tonight.
- Yes, and if we take another look at this replay again the plan that you could tell from Old Town is to front, but it does challenge the defense on the help side to try to stay straight up and old town.
Neither team actually will wanna get into foul trouble tonight.
- Fouls on Evans, that's her first and the first on the team.
Five 40 to go here in the opening quarter from the Cross insurance center.
Toby Nelson, Julie EU Sinclair with you tonight.
We're glad you can be with us for tournament basketball and the station's of main public television and around the world on the web as well.
So you can watch it from anywhere you want to.
Screen set for hos off into the corner, it's Lamb now green, green, nice dump pass off inside, off the glass and into Dagg it.
So Breen, while she posts the big front inside, she's good outside as well.
She - Is, she hit 63 pointers this year and she also can pass a great finish by Daggett to welcome that assist, have - To respect her game ball.
Stolen, taken away by Bre gives it off to Hoose as Oceanside with a one point lead in the first quarter.
Both teams are not showing any jitters out there.
We got a whistle player control foul on who?
So who's called for the player control foul is Emerson with good guarding position on her.
- I actually think we have Degrass on ball here and looks like she had an opportunity to go for the reach and sometimes you gotta read early in the game how the officials are gonna call it - Sage Evans now McKayla, Emerson and that one knocked out of bounds and it'll go off the Oceanside.
So Mariners with the ball back State championship basketball again.
Oceanside won it two years ago.
They were accustomed to playing deep into February, maybe even into March as we are on March 1st.
Here tonight.
Here's hos for the Mariners drives baseline cut off by Emerson.
Now the Kickout pass that three point drive.
Good Renee Ripley for three.
So they've gone inside and now they go outside.
- Can't leave Renee Ripley too open.
She's a hot shooter and can really get streaky and hit down.
Hit those open shots.
- Danika Brown for the Old town Coyotes, they trail it here in the early going by four Brown to the basket.
Shot up, rattles around no good and the rebound taken down by Oceanside.
Mariner's trying to put a little cushion in between them and the coyotes right now whos drives baseline goes up with a shot no good, it was contested nicely by the grass and now pulled out.
Here's Emerson into the front court for the coyotes.
Emerson pulls it back out now - Such a good floor.
General knows when to pull it out, when to push it - Three seconds.
- Magoon now de grass and it's Brown Evan's trying to post up.
She went to the high post that time but Oceanside playing very solid defense on her in the yearly going, here's Evans Corner three.
No good taking out by Green in the rebound.
So old town in the game against Ellsworth the other day hitting some of those shots.
Oceanside not allowing Second Chance opportunities right - Now.
Hey I mean they're dominant.
Almost six.
Almost three players who are six feet on the court.
I think almost four.
Really?
Toby, I think Lamb is probably what, five 10.
So it's gonna be hard to get offensive rebounding opportunities with the way they box out - Around the perimeter.
They go hoose now Lamb Hoose gets it back for the old town Coyote for the Mariners of Oceanside.
Guarded by Old town cornered to Ripley, just stuck a three point shot.
Mariners leading it by four, two and a half to go in the first quarter.
Last Beat Girls State championship game from the cross center, the catch in the corner.
Ripley Dries three got another one.
- Renee Ripley with two threes to start the game and she's also doing a fantastic job.
Guarding - Evans.
32nd time out call by the coyotes.

So early on here we've seen an inside game with Breen and Ripley sticking two three pointers for Oceanside.
They've got it going right now, - They really do.
What's impressive is they have incredible role players, I really shouldn't call 'em role players.
They're key factors to their starting five and Renee Ripley to hit two threes to start the game and have Sophia Daggett to hit two baskets off the bench.
You usually focus so much on Breen but if the surrounding cast is gonna hit like that, it's really gonna make it a challenge for the opposing team - Out of the time out Emerson for Old Town.
So coach Heather Richards snapped a quick time out.
This is Magoon for the Coyotes.
Evans working around the perimeter, haven't been able to establish much inside so far.
They've hit a couple of the three point shot and a running jumper down low Emerson for Old Town routed by Hoose Magoon to the free throw line now kick out to Brown, her shot comes up short, rebound pulled off by Oceanside.
Another one trip, a one shot opportunity for Old Town during the time out.
Oceanside getting a sub in Grace.
Mackey coming in down the lane.
Who's got the runner gets it to go.
- Aubrey Hos is so effective as a driver and you've seen a couple of times this game where she's had a good look that time she was able to confer - Hos is first points of the championship game.
Emerson up top fires three back rimmed at no good rebound, taken down by Evans, her shot no good and pulled out by Oceanside.
Dominant first quarter performance here for the Mariners - All around one through five - Green.
Nice pass off underneath the whos to lay up Good, - What vision by Green to see the open player back to the basket dribbling in, I mean really from perimeter to inside.
She's doing a great job finding her teammates.
- Oceanside and their championship game up here two years ago scored 33 in the entire game.
They've got 16 in the first quarter.
Evans four old town, the grass on the dry, floats it up, can't get it to go.
Got our own rebound and pulls it out for the coyotes.
Out to Emerson with 17 seconds to work with.
Guarded by green, so a size mismatch on that guard.
Combination on the baseline.
Evans with a drive shot no good but a foul and a foul with the one second to go in the quarter.
So Old Town ran the clock down.
They get an opportunity for two with the line - And Evans likes to use that baseline.
Has a high release but you can see where a little bit of the foul came in there.
Old town, you know if they're not gonna hit almost all their shots like they did last game, I think it will be effective for them to move the ball and really try to get the paint even though there's a height advantage there coming up against Oceanside, it may be foul opportunities.
A chance to get to the line.
- Evans makes the free throw her first points of the game.
Katrina Dumond checking in for Old Town Evans second shot.
That one's good got got 'em.
Both inbounds past Arine, she'll let the clock run out and the first quarter is in the books from the cross center.
After one quarter it's Oceanside 16 in Old Town seven on the state of the Maine public television - Production of high school basketball on Maine.
Public television is made possible by people like you and by - A new car, a new home, or what about that vacation you know you deserve.

- The environment is just awesome, - Great campus, small close knit community.
- Everyone's - Really welcoming.
Everything - Feels very personal.
- You feel like you belong here - At the Cross Insurance Center.
Toby Nelson, Julie Sinclair, class B championship basketball in the states of the Maine Public television.
Second quarter underway, Oceanside with a lead and the basketball.
We'll see if they do a lot more what they did in the first quarter.
There's a whistle and an off the ball foul goes on.
McKayla, Emerson, Emerson - And I wasn't quite sure I it was a point to post up screen and I think she might have plowed through the screen a little bit.
That is Emerson.
- So Grace Mackey now in the game.
Her sister Aubrey was on the championship team a couple of years ago.
Grace wearing number 12.
I've got the basketball right now, she'll stop for three Swift.
Well there's a good way to get your name into the store column - And she is a difference maker in this tournament doing exactly that and their final, she had seven points with a couple of threes, so she's forcing teams to not sag off and help on Breen by hitting that type of look.
- Yeah, Breen only has two points.
Now again, she's doing a lot of other things right?
She only has two points in this game right now.
- I think this is probably the hottest start that Ocean Tide has had this tournament - Shot Miss by Emerson Kickout Pass it goes to hos down the lane for the Mariners.
Daggett lost the ball, able to pick it back up but she was out of bounds, so gonna be turned over.
It goes back to the coyotes - And we'll see.
Yep went off.
She had a foot out of bounds there.
That's where the out of bounds came into play.
- Coyote is trying to settle into this one but trailing by 12 Emerson for Old Town.
Now Magoon, you are gonna dumond who checked in right before the end of the first quarter.
Out front a whistle and a hand checking P goes on Oceanside.
- And the other thing for Oceanside, with the height that they have, they have green guarding.
Truly a guard in Elizabeth Magoon.
They have the ability to take it or take Ripley and guard Evans either one of them where other teams, if you're not as blessed with the height, if you will, Breen may be forced to guard the more dominant post player.
- One thing about that foul is on Aubrey Hos.
That's her second.
So coach Matt Bre will have to go to the bench here, go to a little bit bigger lineup that's coming back in the game as Renee Ripley Magoon three point try blocked by Breen and the ball goes out of bounds, it's off Oceanside.
So with who out of the game, you're gonna see Breen actually taking a bulk of the ball handling dude - Is yeah, we've seen them be pressed before and Breen will actually be the press breaker.
She plays like a guard at times.
- Shot mist the grass along the baseline.
She'll pick it up so the long rebound kick back out to her Dumond swing pass Evans - Oceanside in a two three zone - Evans at the free throw line down the lane.
The runner, no good Weakside board pulled off by Breen.
She'll give it off to Grace Mackey and the Oceanside Mariners into front court.
Mackey Guttered by Degrass now Breen swings it over to land at the free throw line.
Green baseline now for Oceanside, well spin move, can't get the shot to go.
Rebound green.
No good blocked away.
Coyotes come away with it.
Emerson runs into the front court has numbers for a moment down the lane.
Floater off the glass.
No good, A little bit too hard.
Rebound to Emerson Magoon for Old Town Dumond Evans.
Everyone touching the basketball here in this possession under five minutes to play in the first half from the cross center.
Big crowd on hand tonight as this game going on and the Oceanside boys will play Oro in the boys final following.
This one shot Mist rebound taken out by Mackey.
Mackey tore and now Breen will settle up in the front court.
Evans comes out to pick her up.
Breen, nice pass on the interior to Dagg it knocked away.
Step back three point try that one's good for Mackey.
- Wow.
Ocean side with four threes, two by three and a two big ones by Grace Mackey.
- Take a look at that one right now.
- You could see she's open, she's ready and it's nothing but net - Stuck.
The three pointer and there's just mentioned Julie, four, three pointers.
They're getting interior shots as well.
But overall it's been a good start here for the Oceanside.
Mariners leading by 15.

Good, great start here.
For Oceanside, they couldn't ask for a better start.
- I I would bet a lot of money that coach Matt Green is taking a nice, lovely deep breath.
It's any coach's dream for their team to come out with a hot hand.
And we've complimented green early in this opening of the game, but it's really been her supporting cast and I should say the entire team that has played their roles perfectly - Out of the timeout.
Mariners with the basketball, excuse me, coyotes with the basketball as the Mariners go back in, see if they stick in the two three zone or if they come out with something different.
Almost looks like a box in one is a really shadowing Evans right now.
- Really shading off whoever Breen is guarding, they're shading off heavily to help inside - Good spin move.
Duma, no good rebound.
Boxed around, loose picked up by Evans.
The kickout goes the grass shot short and it'll be saved in.
No it goes outta bounds off of Evan.
So Oceanside gets the ball back, - Enter Oceanside.
- Grace Mackey for Oceanside is it off on the near side?
Has a three point shot mist, one of few misses so far for Oceanside but another rebound is Lamb.
Hands off to Breen.
Last time Breen was just a freshman when she came in this cross center and got a state championship shot no good.
Another rebound.
Putback no good.
Will a third time be a charm?
They won't get the opportunity to is to jump ball - Last few times down the court when Oceanside is missed, they've actually had second chance opportunities.
- Garrett's with the am miss a couple times her and Evan's going up against each other.
22 7 Oceanside leading last beat Championship game from the cross center.
You're just tuning in the first game you've watched this year.
You notice a new court this year they've redid the court with Paul Bunion in the middle.
Evan shot block, rebound loose, tied up or a time out.
Time out's gonna be called Oceanside takes the time out so the Mariners take the quick 32nd time out to not lose the possession.
- Incredible help ID there.
The team of the pass for Oceanside used to be strictly makes and misses two three zone and this year they've really implemented the man man defense.
Well and their their rotations are spot on so far and they're controlling the boards.
It's really a picture perfect game for them so far.
And of course Old Town three minutes left in this quarter and they've been held scoreless so far this quarter.
- Old Town coyote bands, - They've - Been loud all afternoon as coach Heather Richards.
Trying to find the right answer here.
Push the right button for her old town team out of the timeout.
Mackey all knocked away but picked up along the sideline.
Breen's got it back.
Breen holds over her edge.
Shovel pass off shot, no good ball goes out of bounds.
- Great hustle by Lamb just to give the effort for the offensive rebound.
That's a player who might not stack up the stat sheet but she definitely does a lot of the little good things - Garrett's will check out.
And Sophia Daggett back in for Coach Green, Oceanside, Rockland and George's Valley.
They combine 15 or so years back and it really had a strong athletic tradition since combining ball along the baseline.
Knocked away and stolen, taken out by Mackey.
Mackey racing into the front court with it for the Mariners.
Kick out open three point shot off the front rim.
No good shot, missed by Ripley but able to get the rebound back.
Here's Breen Green along the baseline.
Lamb Ripley Open again for another three pointer around the rim and off taken down by Breen but maybe an over the back pile.
It is on Oceanside.
- Couple good looks for Renee Ripley there.
Those are threes that she can hit but thanks to Old Town box outs they're able to draw the over the back pile.
- Fo was on Daggett, that's her first back door.
The coyotes go looking underneath the basket.
The brown Evans left open for three Switch.
Don't let her get hot folks.
- Yeah, we found out in the the north final that she certainly had put up the points quickly - Had 24 in that regional championship game against Ellsworth knocking off an undefeated team trying to do the same in the state final.
But they've got some making up to do Mackey now with Breen.
Breen backs their way down.
Turnaround shock.
Can't get the roll or rebound.
Pulled off.
No.
Now taken back by Oceanside Green's.
Got it.
Mackey from way downtown.
Yes.
- Wow.
Grace Mackey with three threes this quarter.
I mean if this is a freshman coming up through the ranks for Oceanside, I think there's a bright future ahead.
- The answer is that Evans three pointer back and is back to a 15 point ball game.
Emerson for three.
That one's long taken down by the Coyotes Brown with the board Dumond now Emerson is it off?
They're whistle traveling violation on the coyotes.
Emerson took an extra shuffle step.
Magoon will check back in.
For Old Town taking a seat, Katrina Dumond with 51 seconds to go on the quarter.
Coyotes only scored three points this quarter.
It's been a struggle for them.
Breen, Emerson on the guarding side of things, able to knock it away, but Breen gets it right back on the baseline.
Go back down inside the debris kick out.
Mackey's had the hot hand.
Three, three pointers here in this first half.
Ripley, get it over to her along the sideline and goes off her foot out of bounds.
- I'm not sure if Kaitlyn Lamb knew a teammate was behind her.
She was diving as if that ball was going to go out of bounds.
- 23 seconds to go in the quarter.
25 10 in favor of the Oceanside Mariners.
This is Magoon - Coming - Up top Emerson clock kicking down down a seven.
You see it on the screen.
Emerson wanted a three point try, didn't take it.
Evans throws it up at the buzzer off the glass.
No good.
Doesn't get it.
The fall.
And that's how the first half ends here from the Cross Insurance center, a dominant first half for the ocean.
Oceanside Mariners, they lead at 25, 10 at the half.
We're back with halftime after this.

- Visit the back here at the Cross Insurance Center after the sportsmanship Awards.
And now we look at the halftime statistics, Julie, and you can see why the Mariners have the lead.
- Exactly.
Oceanside, Mariners right now are 10 for 18 shooting 56% as a team have only had about three turnovers have not been to the free throw line yet, but on the old town side they're shooting three for 20, 15% have got to the line once.
So a hundred percent from the line, but not enough.
They've had four turnovers but really it's the points from just about every player that's getting it done On the Oceanside side, - Yeah, 56% for Oceanside, just 15% from the floor for the coyotes.
And it's not because of not getting shot.
So you had, they had 20 shots there in the first half.
So some of those fall in the second half you might see this lead a trickle down, but you get the team on the other side that's playing really, really well.
- And you had a point guard in hos that went out with two fouls.
That's right.
And then you have Grace Mackey come off the bench and hit three threes.
She's the only player who scored in the second quarter and she had nine points.
- Other member of our broadcast crew is Jim Baines.
He's got a big group down there on the base line.
Jim, I'll - Tell you Toby, we just went from the sportsmanship awards, which could be the polar opposite when it's all said and done here we got student sections from all town, student section from Oceanside.
We gotta talk to 'em both here.
First of all, a lot of you guys are honky players.
You had a little big win the other day here.
Tell us about that.
This is, first of all, this is Alex McCannon.
Go ahead.
- Yeah, I mean it was a full effort, full team effort by everybody.
You know Dylan had those three goals and wick good in our net, but all around just a team effort.
Team defensively effort, you - Know, and to be clear, you guys did with the number eight seed in the regionals, you beat number one.
Yeah.
So good for you with the Jack Za.
Tell us about who put this all together.
Jackson.
Now how, how did this all work out?
- Well, I mean I don't really wanna take credit for the whole thing.
It was everybody's idea.
We all went out, bought some stuff, figured we gotta show out, show some school spirit really.
Alright, - Let's give Oceanside a little time over here.
We got Joey Ball, Aiden as well.
Here guys.
Now you guys wear blue.
What is Wal this neon colors here?
Who went, who won that decision?
- So two years ago when the girls went to the state championship before that we decided the theme was gonna be neon and then last year when the boys went to the state champ, we decided to keep it going.
So it's just a tradition.
Every state championship we bring out our neon.
- Alright, very good.
Aiden, what kind of effort does it take to get everybody to do it?
Is it pretty simple once it kind of just snowballs a little bit?
- Yeah, it's not too hard.
We have a, we have a group chat on social media so everybody can connect to each other.
So we all decided to wear neon for tonight.
Keep keep a good thing going.
We always wear Dion.
- Gentlemen, here's what I want you to do.
Very quickly I want you to look at that camera and tell us who's gonna win this game today.
- All right Jim, thanks very much.
Some halftime festivities here at the Cross Insurance Center.
We'll take one final break and come back with a start of the second half.
Oceanside with a 15 point lead, 25 10 at the Cross Insurance Center.

It's coming back shortly.

Tune in for the season premier on Thursday, March 21st, eight o'clock right here on Maine Public Television.
There's a happy group of Mariners and Julie wanted to offer my congratulations to you as well.
Earlier this week the Maine Basketball Hall of Fame announced this year's inductees and you happen to be one of the 12 inductees.
So congratulations on that one.
- Thank you Toby.
It's truly an honor and having a chance to see who the rest of the class is.
It's, it's an incredible honor and I appreciate the sentiments - Years on the court as a player, a coach broadcaster now and on the boy side of things.
Ken Lindoff also being inducted this summer as well, so I'm sure we'll have a chance to talk with him about that.
Great opportunities here in the state.
So the Oceanside Mariners were the lead in the basketball coming out to start this second half switch up sides.
Bailey Breen kick out to who.
She set the final six minutes and 36 seconds of the quarter and as the ball goes out of bounds and it's gonna stay, it went off Old town, it'll stay with Oceanside.
She got in foul trouble.
But again, you talked about Mackey's the way she played.
- Yeah.
And then this was a pass off, a skip pass and sharp.
Her feet got tangled up maybe a little bit.
- Yeah.
- Who skits it in to Dagg it and whos along the baseline now?
Breen little turnaround goes with the left hand no good rebound comes down to Dagg it to Breen and Chief threw it away.
That one goes out of bound.
So it's turned over and the ball will go back to Old Town.
And really the first couple minutes of this third quarter pivotal for the coyotes.
- It is, it's pivotal that they hit shots.
They really didn't have a lot of turnovers.
It's not, it hasn't been that type of game, but they've been limited to one shot lots of times and just haven't been able to knock them down yet.
This - Is Magoon - Littletown - Only scoring three points in the second quarter, driving down the lane, Emerson running her off a glass and in - Emerson can hear us and if she gets a good look and a step at the basket, she's certainly gonna knock it down.
Great player in Emerson.
- So Mikayla Emerson with a bucket 13 point ballgame over a minute gone by in the third quarter from the Cross insurance center, this class B championship game.
Hoose that closely by Emerson by, excuse me, that's Degrass out guarding her now.
Dagg it and Lamb a whistle Travel.
So it's a turnover.
The ball goes back to Old Town.
- A couple turnovers here.
Definitely have a little bit of momentum for Old Town, especially if they can convert on this one - Old town.
Trying to chip away at this deficit.
Magoon Vika Brown out to Sage Evans.
I was trying to get some things going.
Five points in the game, stuck a three in the second quarter.
There was a three point try by Magoon off the side of the rim.
No good rebound taken down by Oceanside.
So much like the first half old town getting one opportunity, - One and done.
The height and the ability to rebound is one of the strengths for Oceanside.
- Who's so quick along the baseline.
Shot no good.
Got too far underneath the basket.
Rebound pulled off by the coyotes.
Emerson running into the front court, takes it right down the lane.
The runner no good but a foul.
- I thought Emerson did a good job avoiding contact just a little bit.
We might be able to see it in the replay.
She's coming right at the defender, but her ability to go around the defender in that moment might have allowed for that block call.
- Well - And Sophie Daggett, that's her second foul.
And two with the free throw line for Emerson.
First one's good.
- Number 12, grace Mackey.
- Grace Mackey coming in and it'll be Lamb going to bench.
Mackey had a heck of a first half of three threes.
Second shot for Emerson's Good.
- You have to wonder coming into the second half, how long is Old Town gonna be that cold?
And how long is OTE gonna be shooting?
56% as a team.
- Aubrey Hos noted by Degrass.
It's a nice job staying where there's step for step Breen now kick out to Ripley Open three point shot off the front rim.
No good.
Those were falling in the first half and not so much here early on in the third quarter.
Ball is tied up and the possession arrow goes to Old Town.
Coyotes have the first four of the quarter and can add to it right now - They can.
Bailey Breen was triple teamed.
She is great at not forcing her shot.
Seeing the open player - Coyotes with Magoon we're the whistle and she's called for a carry.
Let's turn back over to the Oceanside Marine.
There's a bit of a sloppy start to the third quarter.
- It is Unforced turnovers - Coach Heather Richards trying to get her team going down low.
Breen Ball knocked away from her and taken out.
Here come the coyotes with Emerson Emerson off into the front court.
He'll drive the lane.
Floats it up shot.
Good.
- Kayla Emerson.
We saw it in the semi-final win.
She was the game winning shot for them to prevail and she's really turning it on with six points so far this quarter.
- All six points for the coyotes and now it's down to single figures, it's down to nine points.
We'll take a look at that drive right now - You can't really see the hesitation in body control.
She has to get to that seam, but she's just such a good ball handler.
I call her a great leader just 'cause she's got the calm, cool, collected demeanor - Broadcast of the Maine High School Tournament here on Maine.

Oceanside with the basketball have not scored yet.
In this third quarter there was 25, 10 at a half, 25, 16 right now.
Hoose Gotted by Degrass.
- She's really trying to force her left.
- Ripley gives it back to Hoose.
Hoose looking low.
Breen Kickout.
Ripley Open for three.
Yes, - I call those a shootable shot.
That's when you hit the pass rate on the money.
- So Ripley hits the three point try.
We get a whistle afterwards.
I believe a delay of game warning is going to be issued against Oceanside for touching the ball after it came through the hoop.
Next one, it would be a technical foul.
Old Town, old Town worked so hard to get it to single figures and just like that it goes back up to 12.
- Yeah, and then we knew Renee Ripley wouldn't keep missing for too long.
She can knock down the open shot.
That's what happens when you have to double or triple.
Team Bre - Brown up top inside now to Evans.
Evans shot, blocked away, able to get it back.
She's double teamed along the post.
A whistle and a foul called against Oceanside.
Much to the chagrin of the fans behind us - And that will be Breen's second I believe.
But good aggressiveness by Evans to stay strong and try to keep that possession alive.
- Coyotes with the ball, it's Emerson prize.
Three off the back rim no good.
Mackey with the board.
Quickly down Court Hoose jump ball possession Arrow goes to Oceanside, they'll have it in front of their own bench.
Sub in for Old Town as Katrina Dumont checking in, Dagg it to Mackey now Breen right back down shot block away as Daggett shot was blocked and with the ball tied up, goes back to Old Town - And Old Town probably had a sigh of relief there because that is a shot Daggett can hit and it's tough when you have to double team and everyone's overloaded to one side.
Daggetts wide open on the block.
- Three and a half minutes to play in the third quarter.
Oceanside with a 12 point lead in the Class B State championship game.
That was a shot or around the Remen off No Good Green with the board just went right up over the top.
- Literally - Magoon, - She got up on that one too.
- This is hos for the Mariners off in the corner.
Another three pointer around the rim and off no good and a foul in the rebounding action.
The problem with that one for Mackey was she hit a little portion of the rim.
- I was gonna say for those of you wondering if Ma, if Mackey was a human.
She is.
She's had an incredible start to this game and a great self final too.
And because Old Town boxed out and that replay, you're gonna possibly get that over the back call.
- This is Emerson for the Coyotes approaching the three minute mark of the third quarter, the grass.
Now the drive by Magoon shot.
No good rebound taken down by Evan.
Stripped away, she went up with it.
Another jump ball, another possession Hero and the Favors Oceanside side.
This time - A lot of grit happening on both sides.
Trying to secure the rebounds and like the aggressiveness of Magoon.
But the height of six three, Bailey Green, she's a tough one to shoot over.
- Aubrey S Lamb.
And now Mackey Breen off in the corner, it's whos on the drive and a fowl on Old Town goes on Evans.
- I think that's Evan's second foul.
A great attack by who's she loves to use.
The baseline - Town foul number two, Sage Evans first, second team, - Second foul.
First on Old Town here in the third quarter.
Sim Baton Mackey opened for another one around the re off cooled off here in the third quarter.
Emerson for the Coyotes.
Yeah, the lane ball knocked away, but right to the waiting arms of Magoon.
Magoon on the drive or a runner off the glass.
No good.
Got her own rebound.
Putback.
Can't get it to fall.
Third try No good and taken away by Breen.
Three opportunities for Old Town to no avail.
Ripley tries three the miss and the ball goes out of bounds to Old Town.
So both teams have kind of gone cold here in this third quarter.
- Yes, both teams have McKayla.
Emerson is probably the sole player with a hot hand to start this quarter.
Which, how close did they cut the lead?
Nine.
Nine, yep.
So cut it within nine for Old Town with Emerson.
Six points to start the quarter.
- Let's go.
- There's 25, 16 and then there a timeout called and then coming outta that Ripley hit of three.
On the baseline, it's Evans shot comes up short.
Breen tries to pull it down, but stepping in is Emerson got the rebound and she got a foul on Breen.
So got two things there.
The rebound and the foul - Now will be Breen's third I believe.
Emerson just getting in there doing all the little things that she needs to keep her team in.
This - Just announced it is only her second foul.
- Okay, my mistake.
- Down the lane, the runner around and in goes for Katrina Dumond.
So Dumond coming off the bench and getting a bucket in the state final and cuts it to a 10 point ball ballgame.
Lamb off to Mackey Oceans.
I've been settling for a lot of three point tries here in the third quarter.
Hoose back to Lamb as Breen comes across the lane.
Evans on her, they get the ball to Breen with a dribble stolen away, taken out by Emerson.
Came from behind with the steel Emerson.
The quick crossover to the left, the shot out the front rim, no good rebound comes down the shot around the rim and off.
And it's picked up by Oceanside.
So again, it's not for lack of opportunities, - It really isn't opportunities or effort.
You can see the bench, the fans, they wanna erupt, but that ball just won't fall in.
- This is hos the runner off the rim.
No good ball tipped outta bounds.
It goes off green.
- Been a little bit of a fatigue factor settling on for both teams as well.
- It was a 15 point game at the half right now the coyotes have cut it to 10.
If they could hit a shot here, they could essentially cut it in half and that's where you want to be going into the fourth quarter.
Emerson off to Brown.
Now down low.
Evans Dumond the grass, now down low.
Evans a layup off the - Good awareness for Evans.
To notice she had about three players on her.
Really had to shoot that ball quickly like she did.
- Time picking away.
Seven seconds to go in the quarter goes off to Mackey.
Now who with two?
That's a fire from long distance.
That comes up short and the third quarter in the book from the cross center.
We might have a good finish here as Oceanside leads by eight going into the fourth.
We're back with that in just a moment.

Toby Nelson, along with Julie Sinclair.
We start the fourth quarter and Julie trailing by 15.
You can't make 'em all up at once.
But Old Town has cut this in half.
Going to the fourth quarter, - Strong quarter by Old Town.
It was a 10 to three score in that third period.
They still aren't quite making the shots fully.
They can but they're chipping away at the lead.
If they continue at this pace, we're gonna have a game - 28 20, starting the fourth quarter Old town with a basketball Evans along the baseline, round and off.
No good rebound taken down by Breen.
This was as close as they have been in the second half.
They got it to nine at one point, now eight as we start the fourth quarter.
That's curling by 15 at the half Hoose, four Oceanside at the free throw line.
Breen Breen backing your way down, kick out, just Dagg it.
Hands off to Mackey.
Mackey goes up with a shot from the foul line.
Comes up short rebound pulled down by the coyotes Emerson, gutted by Hoose.
This is the grass throw a little floater along the baseline we get a whistle player.
Control P on the grass.
- Gotta love it when a, a post player is willing to step up like you see in this replay and take the charge.
Oceanside does a great job overall of early help.
Almost like they're being taught to pick them up before two feet get in the paint.
- This is Hoose has Mackey back there to help her breaks the times.
Stripe under seven minutes to go in the Class B final from the Cross Insurance Center.
The only game in town tonight underneath a foul is gonna be on.
Evans saw the push as if Breen got the ball, but think she had two hands on her from behind - And Bailey.
Breen has had two points this game.
I mean that is somewhat of a factor right now.
So you wonder if Oceanside's gonna focus more on their sets that allow her to be high.
Low positions in the post.
- Green holds over her head, backs her way down, kick out now and Oceanside really not Hurry to get a shot looking for something good.
Breen down inside, up off the glass, can't get it to go and in the rebounding action a foul on Breen.
So miss the shot, multiplies it with the foul - And when she misses a shot, she's usually very effective getting her own offensive rebound.
But with that height that Evans has her athleticism ability to box out.
Putting a little bit more pressure on Breen to not want to pick up another foul - That is her third magoon for the Coyotes.
This is Brown for Old Town.
Is it off to Evans?
Emerson?
Kick out to Evans Magoon at the foul line.
Travel turned over back to the Mariners with 6 0 6 to go in the fourth quarter.
- An old town is picking up the pressure.
Usually they've been picking up consistently on the point guard but the end of the game really trying to put the pressure on defensively - Trying to steal a ball.
So trying to speed it up a little bit so maybe they can force a Kern over.
Get the ball back.
Here's Mackey Dagg it.
Hands it back to Hoos.
This is Daggett Green.
Sandwiched between two players inside as she's working against Evans.
And then Brown will come down on her down low ball knocked out goes that a base.
It'll stay with Oceanside.
Mariner's Ball sub coming in for the coyotes as Katrina Dumond will check in.
Following the game we'll have the awarding of the gold ball also Jim Baes will have an opportunity to speak to the state champions and then we'll get you off to one more game tonight.
Orno and Oceanside Boys a rematch of last year's state final, which was a classic down in Portland and we hope to have the same here tonight in Bangore kick out corner.
Dagg it.
- The beauty of having the lead in high school basketball in Maine, you really can control the pace.
Oceanside likes to go a little five out - Green travel - See in the replay would be aggressive.
Turns her back.
A little shuffle with Emerson trying to come in and steal the ball.
- Emerson's got it right now.
Team trails it by eight but the coyotes need some buckets.
Magoon, - Neither team has scored this quarter.
Oceanside with three points.
This half - Emerson with a miss.
They scored 16 in the first quarter and since then it's really slowed down for them as far as scoring goes.
Here's Mackey gives it to Dagg it and now Breen Breen who handles the ball well works well inside.
So real versatile player.
Po ratted by the grass Ripley and now who's halfway through the fourth quarter, it's Bre Old town's committed two fouls.
So it's not a shooting situation yet with any foul and we get a timeout call by coach Matt Breen didn't exactly like what he saw and maybe he wants to tell his team something right now leading by eight with three minutes and 51 seconds to go.
- And I think Coach Matt Breen maybe wants to talk about his stall game and what types of baskets do we wanna go for?
'cause they like to hold the ball if they have the lead.
- Today's coverage of high school basketball made possible by Mainers like Chris Thornton who supported Maine public through his estate.
His generous gift helps ensure that we can continue to bring you annual tournament basketball in the stations of Maine public television.
If you'd like to learn more about moving a legacy like Chris has done, call Scott at two oh seven three three zero five four five one zero.
You see it on your screen right now.
Old Town Band playing out of the timeout.
The ocean side ball out of the timeout they'll have it.
There are the coyotes still talking it over with Coach Hedler Richards.
- And you wonder Coach Richards what type of strategy she needs to talk about.
Especially if you know a team's playing a stall game.
They have one foul, actually they have two fouls at this point and obviously to get the the other team to the line and get the ball back, they have to get to five Team Fouls, - Oceanside Ball out of the timeout.
Coyote's very late to break the huddle.
Mackey inbounds looking for Hoose and does get it into Hoose.
The grass guarding her out front and a blocking fo on Degrass stops the clock with 3 44 to go.
- The effort Degrass has right now to try and force who's to use her left hand.
It's like they know the play so she's trying to prevent her from going there.
But if you are the player with the ball you do have right to be able to get to some space.
- Dagg it ratted by Dumond and she commits the foul.
That's the fourth team foul.
So they'll send, after this one, Oceanside will be shooting two shots the rest of the way.
Remember, no one-on-ones this year in Maine high school basketball, the team fouls reset after every quarter after five and there's the foul on Old Town.
So Emerson commits the foul.
Mackey going to the free throw line for two.
And by my count, this is the first free throws that Oceanside has attempted today.
- You are correct - And old town's only attempted four.
So it's not like we've seen a lot at the foul at the free throw line.
- In order for Old Town to have opportunities offensively, they will strategically more than likely have to foul.
- First one missed by Mackey, she'll get one more and missed them both.
So the freshmen missed both them with the free throw line.
Rebound comes off the Old town team Trails by eight Emerson drives, floats it up off the rim.
No good Evans the follow off, the glass and end - Sage Evans active slithering in there for the offensive rebound - Six point ball game.
This is a seven nothing run, it's gone over a long period of time.
'cause Oceanside scored three points this quarter, - Three points this half, - Excuse me this half yes and a foul called an Old Town - Good aggressiveness by Mackey.
You know, if you're gonna stall, you at least wanna look like you're going to the hoop.
And my, my thoughts right now is if you do need to foul, you just wanna make sure you're strategic in who you foul and, and who is fouling for Old Town?
Neither team goes really deep in their bench.
- Well Mackey is Mr first three from the line and you know how it goes.
The hoop gets a little bit smaller every time you miss and she missed that one rebound goes out to the sideline and a bounds off Mackey.
So it'll stay with Oceanside.
Mariners go back on the defensive side and this is Emerson.
They've cut it to six Old Town has still plenty of time left in this game.
The ball goes through the hands of Magoon and out of bounds.
So an unforced turnover there.
- There's been a number of these situations, whether it is a missed basket or an unforced turnover, - The ball turned back over and - You almost appreciate that the body language still of Old Town isn't showing that of, oh I'm deflated.
They still just put their head down.
All right, we're gonna try to get it on the other end.
- Oceanside with the lead.
Breen's got it For the Mariners, she'd love to get fouled and go to the free throw line.
This is Ripley back to Hoose.
Coyotes can play defense for a little while just with the time they only trail by six.
- Hoose - Kick out to Mackey.
This is Breen Ripley.
Hands off to Hoose and a foul goes against Emerson.
- An old town was trying to foul earlier and now the team knows they wanna foul and - It's going to be an intentional foul too, is there was no play for the ball.
So Hoose will go to the free throw line and shoot two plus Oceanside will get the ball back.
- And how many fouls is that for Emerson?
Four?
It's her four.
So when you have this strategy of fouling, you almost gotta consider who isn't in foul trouble as well, but it's, it's definitely easier said than done.
- Yeah, who missed the first one?
They're O of five from the line all in the fourth quarter.
- The flow of the second half might be, might be the most unique game I've experienced.
- She makes the second, so Snaps that run snaps the seven oh run for Old Town.
Plus they snap their oh for five from the Line Street - First points of the quarter as well.
- And it's up to a seven point ball game with under two minutes to go a rip lead.
Arine Green Drives gives it baseline, Dagg it now up top to Hoose and a reaching foul in Old Town.
- And the two players picking up fouls are the two offensive scores for Old Town.
You could tell a little bit by the body language of Evans, she, it almost looked like, gosh I, I didn't wanna be the one to pick up that - Foul.
That's her fourth foul.
So both Emerson and Evans with four first free throw by Hoose is good.
Back up to an eight point ball game with 1 44 to play in this championship game.
Second one around and then in up to nine Magoon gives it to Emerson.
Emerson step back long try is good.
Hit the three pointer in a timeout called by coach Heather Richards.
- She's got ice in her veins.
We've seen it a number of times.
Emerson has the ability to be a really effective one-on-one player.
- They're not going away yet.
Main public YouTube channel not only has the state final games live, but you can also catch up on ones you may have missed or want to watch again.

So we just saw McKay Emerson hit a three point shot, cuts it back down to a six point game with a minute 30 to go in this one.
Really it's anybody's game right now.
- It's like almost like the old MJ moved, right?
One of the game-winning shots he had driving it right.
Defender Falls back a little bit, step back, three - Old town faithful trying to will their team back into this one trail.
25, 10 at the half.
This is as close as they've been all game long.
The six points is as close as they've gotten since that.
Still trying to chip away at this one inbound tore in the back court that gives it off to Hoose.
Who's double team ball stolen, taken out the grass to the glass, no good rebound pulled down by Bre.
Hoose throws it a little bit too high and it goes out of bounds so it's turned over and the ball goes back to Old Town.
- I've been observing Coach Matt Green on the sideline.
This has been such a unique challenge for his team and he's been so calm but you could see it, you know.
Ah, just a little bit of frustration there.
It's almost like his team needs that to be like, coach, we got you - Emerson off a goon.
We'd love to see Emerson or Evans, get the ball.
Those are the real scores for this coyote team.
But Evan's having a hard time touching it right now.
Driving baseline the grass now to Evans knocked away.
Evans picks it back up 45 seconds to go long.
Three pointed or grass that went off the side of the rim, no good rebound.
Pulled down by Oceanside with 38 seconds to go after Ripley.
Now Bre and Breen fouled in the back court and the Oceanside crowd behind us are on their feet.
- And this fourth quarter the opportunities for Oceanside has come from the foul line because of their stall game.
It is definitely for and just the time and score.
It's forcing Old Town to put 'em to the line and and Hos was the big one to go three for four from the line.
Had she not done that, this would be a different story.
And now Bailey Breen is adding to the scoring column and this is her first points this half.
But this whole game, she's been double, triple teamed and she's fine in the open player.
- Second shot's good.
Two of two at the line.
Time out.
Call 32 seconds to go.
Coyotes take it but it's up to an eight point ball game.
So Coyotes gonna have to come up with a big play here.

33 25 Oceanside leading Old Town.
32 seconds to go.
Mariners come up with some full court pressure and it comes into Magoon quickly into the front court off to Evans Sage Evans three point try is missed.
Rebound out to the corner to hos and then dribbled it out of bounds.
It'll go back to Old Town but only 20 seconds left, 20 - Seconds and more than a two possession game.
So gotta take a quick shot.
But this is a difficult challenge with only 20 seconds left with how many points they need at this point in the game.
- Gold Ball is on the table, a runner in the lane, no good rebound, taken down by Daggett.
Gives it out two Breen with 12 seconds Breen into the front.
Court picks up the ball.
Old Town will not foul, they get a whistle and a five second call.
So a five second violation on Oceanside with two seconds to go.
Coyotes will get the ball back but only two seconds to work with Pass comes into Magoon and that is gonna do it.
The Oceanside Mariners weather the storm here in the second half and they win the Class B.
Final 33 25 - Hats off to the Oceanside team.
What a hot start.
They had almost every one of the starters was hitting shots.
This is their second one in three years.
Their record over the last few years.
61 and no now 62 and one.
That's impressive.
That's a dominant factor.
- And you look at what they have coming back next year as well.
This Oceanside team is loaded.
Ripley Mackey Hos.
Oh yeah.
And Bailey Brine.
- Yeah, three, three Seniors, Daggett Lamb and Bo Bery are seniors on the ocean side team and they faced some adversity in the second half and they had to battle through just a a weird kind of flow that's unlike themselves.
So hats off to this team for getting it done tonight.
- So the Oceanside Mariners get set to rip the nets down.
They rip one of them down, they'll wave them in just a moment is Hoose is waiting.
- They make it pretty easy these days.
Hoose went right up there, pulled the string and she's, she's waiting - Other net on the other side is coming out here in just a moment.
They've got 'em both and they're waving them around.
The Oceanside Mariners champions of Class BA 33 25 win over the Old Town Coyotes and as you mentioned, second gold ball in three years.
- It is.
And the storyline this week really or this tournament has been the loss they had the year before and how motivated they've been in the off season and how they've heard, Hey, you've lost some really good players, are you gonna be that good this year?
And it's really been a motivating factor and Coach Matt Breen discussed how impressed he was at how well they clicked early on.
So really dominant season for them.
- The Oceanside Mariners, in just a few moments time we'll get their gold ball and they'll take it back to the Rockland area tonight.
And the boys trying to do the same thing coming up next.
We'll have coverage of that here on the stations of Maine Public Television.
So Oceanside with a Wind 33 25 over the Old Town Coyotes old town though has nothing to be ashamed about.
They knocked off a team that beat them twice to win the regional championship and back here for their only second time in the state championship game and made a game of a game out of it down the stretch - Without us starting second leading score for the last two games.
You could see they actually have some smiles on the bench right now.
I think they're proud of how far they went.
It's hard when a team comes out shooting 56% as a team.
The first half, it's hard to beat someone who's doing that.
Even from the three point line.
They hit like five threes in the first half.
- They were hot in the first half, not so much in the second half.
Have built that lead up enough to get the win.
33 25.
Send it over to the table as we will get the award ceremony here right now - Is Jason Simpson, regional operations manager.

Second straight time.
They've won it here at the Cross Insurance Center.

- Everyone's really welcoming.
- Everything feels very personal.
- You feel like you belong here.
- I'm not sure if they're gonna let that gold ball go anytime soon and why wouldn't they?
Mariners Champions 33 25 beating the Old Town Coyotes.
Toby Nelson, Julie Sinclair back at the Cross Insurance Center as we'll hear from the participants here in just a moment.
As the coyotes lose this 1 33 25.
But again for Old Town, you look at it, they had a great season beat a team that they had lost to twice during the year and just came up a little bit dry here in the state championship game - They did - And and to knock off an undefeated team.
And that North Final is a feat in itself.
A strong Ellsworth team playing loose.
And unfortunately just the ball didn't go through the net enough today.
- So the old town Coyotes will finish up at 19 and three on the season and an undefeated team in Oceanside.
Both the Mariner team coming in here undefeated.
And the only way they were gonna leave both, both undefeated, was to bring home two gold balls.
Well they're halfway there.
Here right now.
- It's quite incredible the record that they've had the last few years and tonight it was a, it was a little bit of a cold second half for them, but they had five players in the scoring column.
You might be able to say Old town held Breen, well below average, but honestly Breen didn't need to score when she had her teammates to pass due to hit the shots.
- A win for the Mariners that send it over to the floor.
Jim Baines with that victorious group right now, Jim.
- All right, thank you very much.
Toby Bailey, we met a couple years ago.
How does this one feel compared to when you did it as a freshman?
- It feels so good.
I was missing this feeling last year now.
Now I don't gotta have seasonal depression when winter comes around 'cause we got it back.
So I'm proud of this group and they brought the energy and they show up every day and they have your back and I couldn't ask for a better group of teammates and they came out and played with heart and got it done.
- So that did really get to you last year and they more motivated to win this year, right?
Oh - Yeah, we were, we were pissed.
I don't even, we all cried on the bus ride home.
It was, it was pretty sad.
It hit us for a long, a long time And I think just like knowing that we felt that way, like watching videos of Spruce Mountain cut out the nets from last year, like that hurts.
That hurts.
And when you know that you're capable of, you're capable of beating a team to get here and we should have been here last year.
Just, just stinks to know that we messed that up.
So it's glad.
Good to be back.
We're good.
- Grace, I tell you, you had some great shots here in the first quarter.
It feels like you knew this floor real well.
You, this is the first time you've been here.
Was this a real smooth game for you in the first quarter?
- Yeah, it just felt natural for me to really get out there with the team and these girls I work, work really well with.
So I think that's what helped me.
Alright.
- Felt a lot more different on the second half here.
What do you think Old Town did?
- I don't know.
I think they just came out like wanting it and we needed to keep up our intensity.
Alright, - Very good.
Renee, just wanna check in with you on this one, this second half, very different.
What did you think Old Town, did that kind of slow you guys down there?
Did you, did you feel anything like that before all year?
- I mean, I think they just came out ready.
I mean the third quarter is always a big quarter in any of these big games.
You know, first half is, you know, just coming outta halftime, it's anybody's game and they were ready and they really brought the intensity for us.
Very good.
- Yeah.
I got a question for Aubrey.
One question for you.
First of all, you look fine compared to that shot you took there in the the fourth quarter.
Have you ever been hit that hat hard all year?
- Yeah, I'm used to being on the ground.
It's kind of like my thing, it's a little, I don't know, I'm just always trying to, you know, get to the basket and people hit me hard.
- Alright, - Tell us what this team has meant to you over this year.
- It's meant everything.
Losing last year, being a starter and like young, I was a sophomore.
Just being able to get back here like I did freshman year and actually make an impact in the game is just awesome.
And these girls all work so hard.
I'm gonna miss the seniors so much.
- Yeah, very good.
Let's see if we can get Matt in here.
Oh, Matt's in a, yeah.
Matt, can I borrow, can I borrow you for a second here?
There.
Sorry guys.
Very good.
Congratulations here.
Thank you.
Very good.
So let's talk about the two, two halves very different.
Tell us about what Old Town did in the second half to kinda slow you guys down.
- I mean they just, they packed it in on Bailey and you know, we did hit some threes in the first half, but they, they basically said, we don't think you can do it again in the second.
And you know, we, we didn't make those shots so we needed to do a better job pacing the floor and executing it so she could get the ball in space.
But you know, we stepped up and made enough plays and we were able to keep our composure when they were making that run.
And I think that comes from being here before a team that hadn't been here may, may have gotten a little more rattled than the girls did.
Alright - Guys, bring in here.
We've got one more question.
Kayla Baine.
Step forward please.
This is my great niece, Kayla.
She's the, the granddaughter of my late brother Jack.
And she has a little line here to give to the team.
I usually say this, but I'm passing it off to her.
What do you say to tonight?
- Tell the camera what it's like to be state champ.
- Well that's a good uncle right there, giving you a chance for his niece to talk on the air.
So a wind for the Oceanside Mariners.
And we'll see if the boys can do the same.
Is that a wrap up coverage of Game one of our championship basketball in the stations of Maine Public Television?
I want to thank everybody involved.
Our director Nick Godfrey.
Kurt Chadburn, our producer, Jim Bain's on the sideline and my broadcast partner, Julie Sinclair.
Kobe Nelson saying so long.
Final score on this one.
The ocean side.
Mariners 33, the Old Town Coyotes 25.
Hang with us.
We've got more basketball coming your way or no, Oceanside boys.
Prince Stevens and Kinlin Law will take it after this.
