It's the MPA Boys Class B State Championship presented by Ware Butler between the Oceanside Mariners and the Arno Red Riots.
- Good evening and welcome back to the Cross Insurance Center for the Boys Class B State championship game.
I'm Brent Stevens, along with Hall of Fame coach Ken Lindoff and Ken, a rematch of last year's Class B State championship game Oceanside.
Exactly where they want to be to take on or and o the team they lost to last year.
- Exactly.
So this is, this should be a dandy, I mean the rematch that everybody was looking toward, if you're a high school basketball fan in Maine, you had this game circled, you know, coming into the state championship Saturday or weekend - And last year it was Orno winning it by three and a a a last second.
Three.
Three pointer just off the mark by Oceanside.
So they definitely, at the beginning of the year, they wanted, they wanted or o here in the state championship - Game.
Absolutely.
They're facing a pretty tough or o team though that's used to playing.
This is practically their home court.
- All right, let's check in now with Jim Baines.
- Alright.
Okay Coach rere, the, the goal was to get to Bangor, you're back and even got an opponent that you're familiar with that this must be great for the community.
Yeah, - We love it.
You know, seeing our girls come out here before, win their game and here we are back in the state championship against the team that we played last year.
You couldn't ask for anything better.
- Do you scout them the same or is there a little different approach here this year, - Eh, they're a little bit different.
We're a lot different than we were last year.
We're a little bit more quicker.
We lost a couple of our big guys so we play a little bit different and we've seen them, they've all gotten a lot better too, so it's gonna be a great contest.
- Areas of concern.
Biggest ones for Oro?
- For Oro.
I mean they have one of the best players in the state in Pierce Walton.
He had 29 against Old Town.
We can't let him get started and have that kind of game tonight.
Alright - Coach, good luck to you.
Thank you.
And we'll talk with Coach Ed in just a minute.
- Alright, thank you very much.
Oceanside coming in here with a 21 and oh Mark ranked as number one in Class B South and as alluded to by Coach Reed, the girls already captured a state championship in the first game here tonight.
Now once again, let's check in with Jim Baes.
- All right, coach, you got the dream matchup here in Bangor.
A team you're familiar with last year, but no matter who you're playing or no loves this, - Well I'll tell you they're, they're an impressive team.
If somebody had told me that the Oceanside team we saw last year would be higher scoring this year, I'd have said you're crazy.
But they are, they're more offensive and Firepower is higher than a year ago.
They may not be quite as big and they're starting five, but they can score - Comparing for them or I should say, you know, getting ready for 'em this year.
Compare contrast, is it a different ballgame this year than last year's or team or last year?
Oh, should side team.
Well - I think what you have to do, and I'm sure they're thinking the same way, you try to decide what's the same as a year ago, what's changed.
I think for us it's mostly maturity.
It's mostly maturity and there's its firepower.
Alright.
- Oh, thank you very much Ed, right back to you.
- Thank you very much.
Now we take a look at the Road to the gold and take a look at how each of the teams got here.
- Yeah, undefeated Oceanside, Mariners outstanding season averaging 90 points a game that's unbelievable or no red rise on the other hand, 15 and three.
It had a little three game losing streak in the middle of the season, but they righted the ship and they finished strong Oceanside Mariners number one, class B South Orno.
Number four, they defeated caribou in a pretty close game, actually took care of Ellsworth and Old Town.
They seemed to get better as the tournament went along.
And on the ocean side side of things, they took care of the Southern Maine tournament really winning handily in each of their games.
So we're looking for a a, a great game tonight.
There's a lot of firepower on both sides.
Orno maybe a little more slower tempo.
They want to control the the tempo.
You're gonna see Oceanside, they wanna push the ball, go up and down.
They can turn a close game into a layup line if you, if you're not careful, - You made midget of it at the beginning of the season.
Oceanside certainly the team that everybody sort of expected from the south.
The north was more of a tossup but Oro certainly in the mix.
Now let's turn things over to Sean Stackhouse - Center for the 2024 Main Principals Association.
Main State Basketball Championships presented by where Butler Building Supply, this main state boys Class B championship game features the champions of Southern Maine with a record of 21 and oh the Mariners from Ocean Tide High School and the champions of Northern Maine with a record of 18 and three, the Red riots from Oro High School.

First for the visiting in Southern Maine.

Number one Zeeb Foster - And - For the Oro red riots at Gardas senior number 10, Pierce Walston for Oceanside at Gardas Senior number three, Cohen Galley for Oro at Gardas Senior number 24 Ben Princess for the Mariners, A senior center Number 11 Maddox Robshaw.
And for the red riots a sophomore guard Number 30 Bergen Soderberg for Oceanside at Gardas Senior number 12, Carter Galley and for Orino at forwarded junior number 32 will Francis for the Oceanside High School Mariners at Guard, A senior number 15 Ben Trip and for the Oro High School red riots at forward a senior number 44 Mason Kenney - Officials - For tonight's gamer, Mr. McKinnis, Mr. Piton and Mr. Scott certified athletic training services are provided by Northern Lights.
Sports Health, - We are just moments away from getting this one underway.
The Oceanside Mariners will start four seniors and one junior on the flip side or no red riots come out to start the game with three seniors, a junior and a sophomore.
- Both of these teams really have a lot of championship experience though most of these kids played important minutes last year so this is nothing new for them.
We gotta talk about the, the, the, the galley boys, the twins between them they average 50 points between the two of them and then the top guns for Oro number 10, Pierce Walston and really number 32 will Francis and Ben Francis as well.
Number 24 - Couple of brothers out on the floor for each team and the tip is up, then it comes away to Oro.
- Here's Walton.
Outstanding point guard never in a hurry.
- Walton gives us off the right side to Soderburg.
We'll swing it around left side on the perimeter.
Walton gets it back.
Walston goes to work against Trip from the corner.
The three is up and in by Bergen.
Soderberg, - Yeah Soderberg will take threes and make threes nice assist by Pierce Walston - Driving in right side Galley Cohen Galley shot no good.
Taken down by the red riots.
Lost an inn on the drive, laid it in for two.
- Yeah and getting out to a good start is really important in the game like this.
So right now the early edge goes to the red riots.
- Coach Reed saying that his team, he thought his team would've to play probably their best game of the year in order to compete with Oro shot Mist and Oro taking it the other way.
- And that was Carter Galley.
That's his first shot of the night.
He'll take many more.
- Walton on the dribble works against Foster Walton Intu.
- He he's getting right now wherever he wants to came off that high screen.
Not much of a hedge on the part of Oceanside.
He is able to turn the corner.
- Quick seven, nothing lead here by the red riots.
Coach Reed also said his squad would have to get off to a fast start.
This is not what he wanted.
That's what he wants though.
- Well that's Step Foster.
You know he, he's really their their third weapon and he's an outstanding shooter.
So we got three guys for Oceanside that all can all shoot the ball extremely well.
The - Junior puts the Mariners on the board making it seven two is Francis now gives off to Sauderburg top.
It comes to Walston.
- We're doing a lot of face guarding.
On on Walston.
There's a quick double but Trip has the assignment of staying with Pierce Walston - Then Francis gets it down to Walston and Shot is off the mark like he may have been partially blocked.
- Yeah, Walston made a nice little backdoor cut to get himself open.
- Backing it out is Carter Galley Galley with a nice pass and a block is Esha went in for it.
Walston on the right side, the block hesitates and kisses it off the glass.
Walston with six points here in the - Once again able to get right in the lane and late help or no help.
- Right side three up and in by Cohen Galley.
- Actually right now Oceanside has to be pretty happy with the pace we're going up and down.
Tough to speed this guy up though Walton, he'll take his time, - Gives it over to Francis.
Will Francis now to Ben Francis then gets it back.
His brother in the corner law pass out front.
Francis has it slapped away from behind.
It's knocked at a bound.
Officials look at each other and they give the ball to or in our first sub of the games we take a look at the - Replay.
- It - Goes Will Francis Ball was kicked out of bounds by Foster.
So now Oceanside has some size now with Ripley Red riots go inside to Will Francis who can really get off the floor.
- Francis puts him up by six.
They're shot off the glass will have a whistle.
- Here's Foster on the drive gets hit on the way in.
Gonna shoot two - Foster shooting two - The first foul of the game.
That one on Ben Francis Zen Foster connects on the first of two.
He makes them 11 seven Orno on top by four.
- It is a running jump now - Get the early Francis the three - Trying to get the early pressure on Wal and get him to give up the ball.
Unfortunately for Oceanside it went right to a wide open Will Francis - Knocked away by a Walston Walston off to the races finds Francis and we've got a foul - And be on Cohen galley.
I believe - Cohen Galley does pick up the file that is the first foul against Oceanside.
- Walston with the steel and Cohen galley with the contact - Bill Francis on the line to shoot two second one around and out - The freshmen Ripley with the rebound - Foster has Ripley now it's knocked out and knocked to away rather or no pull it out.
Cross court pass it comes to Soderburg, dumps it down low.
Now Kenny and a timeout.
17 seven.
The red line that's on top by 10 with 3 27 to play here in the first.
- Right now Oceanside not 10.
Taking care of the defensive end, letting people get away from 'em right there.
A wide open layup in the half court, not what you're looking for right now for the Mariners.
Early in this ball game - High school quiz show Maine season seven is about to begin.
16 teams from across Maine competing to see who will be this year's champion and bring home the $1,000 prize.
Tune in for the season premiere Thursday, March 21st at eight o'clock right here on Maine Public television.
It'll be Oceanside basketball as we come out of this timeout.
The Mariners finding themselves down by 10.
Carter Gall.
Thought about the three gets it over to Foster now from the west side.
Colin Gall shot, no good shot was saddle four underneath and taken down by Mason.
Kenny.
Yeah a shot - Was deflected that time out of the corner by Cohen Galley.
I believe Carter Gall's only taken one shot so far.
- Walston will put up the three off the mark Mariner's racing up.
The shot is up at end by Carter Galley - And he can do that.
There's a lot of times you wouldn't want a player to do that but he's got extreme skill level shooting off the dribbles, no problem - There.
35 points in the southern main final against Lincoln Academy.
Inside a goes to Kenny - Lincolnton - Once again it starts with Pierce Walston.
He gets right inside the lane at the heart of that defense and can do whatever he wants.
- Carter Galley with the ball, passes down low off the glass up and in for two for Trevor Ripley the freshman - Turn the able to turn the corner off the ball screen and find the big freshman who finishes - Two minutes to play here in quarter number one.
- Yep.
Walston calls for a ball screen.
- Walston thought about it.
Gives off to Woodley now it gives it back.
Kenny, I should say underneath Walston and Francis with follow.
No good battle for And finally a whistle.
We've got a tie up, possession our favors, the Mariners - And what just Walton gets inside.
Ripley gets the rebound and Will Francis ties him up.
- Caden Gray number 14 has come into the ball game and Noah Schaff number 50 has checked in for the red riots as well.
Zach Woodman is also in for Oceanside and inside we've got contact.
- Yeah Zep Foster turning the corner there going hard to the basket.
This is the second time he is done that and drawn the foul.
- The shaft just into the game picks up the foul.
Foster on the line to shoot two.
Two for two make it three for three the line tonight.
Brady Hughes sophomore has also checked into the game for coach Ed Cat Walton Foster makes his second foul shot.
He's four for four from the line has six points on the night.
- So Orno comes in with three new players.
Three of their starters are outta the game right now.
Oros a little bit deeper, they they use their bench a little more than Oceanside does - On the baseline.
It comes out into the corner.
The shot is off the iron Missed by Caden Gray and we'll quickly the other way with it.
We've got a Carry Carter Galley - And that was a problem right there.
Carter Galley.
Here he is.
One on one 15 got his hand stuck under the ball.
Good call - Under a minute to play here in quarter.
One more.
Oh on top by five with the ball Hughes with it on him is Galley Carter Galley Hughes gives off to Walton Pierce.
Walston tries to get between a couple of defenders and install for travel.
He wanted a mile.
- Well he tries to split the double team.
We've got the Cali boys, the Galley boys are converging on him.
- So the Mariners with a chance to cut into the lead into the corner.
The long one missed by Ripley.
He's got a foul.
- This a rebound by Caden Gray.
His - First team second - Powell goes to trip - Just the first on trip.
They only the second team fo against the Mariners.
More than four files in this first quarter Total Walston walks it - Up, they're gonna get last shot.
- Whips it over to Hughes.
Hughes into the lane over runner.
No good rebound taken down by the Mariners Tally, throws it up.

I thought it was gonna be a little more deliberately paced but both teams kind of going up and down - Right side Long attempt is missed by Cohen Galley and Nono.
We will walk it up.
Walton take the shot down.
Hands off to Francis off the iron.
No good Foster has it knocked away.
Picked up and up in here by Carter Gall.
- Right place at the right time.

Walston on the dribble into the lane.
Turn around.
No good rebound.
Take him down.
This by Noah Shaft - Walton showing his post up game.
He's dangerous down there because he can take it to the basket.
He, he can also pass out of the low post.

Drives into the lane off a glass no good.
He tips it out.
Foster gathers it now Cohen Galley comes off the right side off the back of the Iron Walston off right side Soderberg now Ben Francis in the lane stopped there.

So, so number, number 30, Trevon Ripley had to come out and try to guard the the much quicker.
Walton - Galley gets you down into the corner.
Carter Galley Foster swings down right side to Woodman.
Woodman is blocked.
- Oceanside having a little bit of problem with Oros length.
Oros a little bit bigger.
There's the drive.
Okay, nice reflection that time by Mason Kenny.
- And when we come back, Trevor Ripley getting his third and fourth points of the night.
Second basket, seven point game 27 20.
Walton gives it up momentarily and gets it back.
- Really good at using ball screens.
Now it's Will Francis - Walton is blocked like Ripley able to get a hand on that galley into the lane and he's stuffed.
We have a tie up or no, we get the ball.
- Yeah, galley goes by, gets a half a step and immediately draws three red riots.
Will Francis reaches in and ties him up.
- 2 35 to play here in the first half.
Ed riots looking for their second straight gold ball ton brings it up.

It's a down low in a Kenny.
I am Francis with it.
Francis on the dribble left side to Soderberg.
Berg's shot is off the mark.
He has two threes already in this game.
Galley gets it down to Ripley Downed into the corner.
The three is up in by Z Foster.
Make it a two that was just a two point shot.
- He'll make those.
He also Foster does has the assignment of guarding Walton down on it here in this end.
- Walston starts, stops and goes into the lane and he is blocked.
Comes out to Francis.
Will Francis Soderburg Quick touch, pass him to the lane.
Now out into the quarter of those, it's taken away from Kenny, - Part of Galley with the steel - 27 22 - Orno does doing a good job defensively as guarding gaps.
So you're not giving the galley boys room to move.
- Galley has his pocket hit to hop ahead.
It goes to Walston who lays it in for - 2 29, 22 7 - Point lead.
Now for the red riots, as we approach the end of the first half, foster Foster drives into the lane.
He gets a shot to go and he'll go to the line to try to make it.

- Is that Foster getting it done for?
For their Oceanside?

Visit fame maine.com/alright, - Congratulations to the sportsmanship award winners and at this time we're gonna toss things over to Jim Baes.
Jim, - Just a couple of Midcoast guys meeting here right now.
Yeah, Lucas McNally let tell you about this guy here.
You know we get a lot of compliments for the work we do here at the state championship and we appreciate it all but we have to share the credit.
So much of the statistical information came from this guy right here.
Luc McNally, formerly of Walters.
Kurt still of Walterboro.
- Orm in Dammar Scotta now.
But yeah, close enough.
- Alright, he's from Maine basketball rankings.com Fantastic site gives a lot of information.
How did you start this whole thing here?
- So it was kind of like a game like this back in 2015 there was a big argument online over whether or not a Midcoast team could beat a Big East team.
And because Madam and Oceanside were at the top of the region and Orno and Pres Island and teams like that were on the other side and there's no crossover games.
And I thought well that's a math problem.
How hard could it be?
And it's very hard.
- Well first of all, half the basketball discussions are whether a big East team could be on a Midcoast team that's been going on forever right there forever.
- For as long as Maine has been part of Massachusetts.
Well - We have what, 130, 140 high schools in in Maine.
- 130.
Yeah.
- So how do we keep on top of that?
- It, it's not easy.
I have a lot of people now.
It used to be a lot harder and a lot of people now just send me scores, which is the hardest part.
It's just collecting the scores of like deer aisle Stonington who like reports every three weeks, you know?
But it's a lot easier now because people send them to me directly and that takes cuts a lot of time - Out.
So it's a lot of networking and people you know right there - It's a lot of networking.
Yeah and a lot of people I don't know who walk up to me during turn week and go, oh hey I'm so and so love and sight.

So I would stop yelling at the refs and so for the first couple years I would sit up way up in the corner where no one could see me and now I just walk around and I like hang out with everybody.
So it's a lot of fun.
- Alright.
Have you stopped yelling at the refs yet?
No, - No, no, but I'm quieter about it and it's an internal yell.
Okay, - I referee so we'll talk.

Gets head and shoulders ahead of, of Foster Ripley.
Steps up to help leaves the basket, unguarded and shaft with the finish.

- Don't look for or nose to do anything other than hold onto the ball.
They'll lay up some free throws at this point from now to the rest of the game.
As long as they have this lead, - They are in the bonus as we saw last time down the floor.
- I don't think that Oceanside will look to foul right off.
We'll try to get a quick double try to get Walton to give up the ball to make it tough on him to get it back.
We'll see if they extend their defense into a full court.
- Oceanside girls winners over Old Town 33 25 in the first game here at the Cross Insurance Center.
- Full court pressure - Pass comes way up ahead to Francis.

Then thought better of it.
And now we've got a foul.
You see who they, they call that on Foster.
- There's a helium pass that time.
I'm not sure where they called that foul on - Foster.
Foster is what the foul.
That is his second.
So Will Francis on the line and he gets the roll Francis second fall shot up in end that pushes the Orno lead up to five 50.
2 47 passed down low, picked up nearly stolen by Wall Street, driving into the lane faster.
And we've got ball knocked outta a bounds.
Last touch by the red riots.
42.6 seconds left.
- You don't need a three right now.
You'll take one if you can get it.
- You need a score though.
Carter Galley is by a - Walton third Smith.
- I'm not sure Pierce Walston realized there were four tee bombs.
No, because when he looked up he held his hand in his hands - Because - He realized at that point that's gonna put Carter galley on the line - And you don't want them scoring when the clock isn't moving either.
- Carter Galley misses the second one and now a foul immediately by Ben Trip.
So we'll walk to the lunch of the court.
- Will - On the line to shoot two is Will Francis.
The first one is up and in Caden Gray checking into the game for coach Ed Al - World - Around an out 53 48 5 point game.
Cohen.
Now Carter run a now Cohen Deli with it gives off to foster a lot of time being taken off the court.
Three up and around.

Nobody had anywhere to go.
Nobody had open shots.
All the gaps were covered.
Then they finished it off with a defensive rebound.

And this is the first makes the second.
It's a six point lead.
The Mariners pushing it up.
Carter Galley gets it into the corner.
The three off the mark rebound taking down by Arnold tossed up ahead in Ben in the red riots.
Repeat as state champ for the Class B Boys basketball 56 48 the final and the Orno red riots for the second straight year have defeated the Mariners of Oceanside to win the boys Class P State championship.
- It got real interesting there for a while.
It was tied at 41.
Oceanside had a chance, but the Oro red riots just outstanding.
Put the ball in Pierce Walton's hands.
Good things will happen.
They were unable to really Oceanside to deal with his supreme command of, of the offense for the Oro side.
- Before this game started, you and I were talking about where we thought we might see the final score of where we, where the score might end up.
And we were saying maybe perhaps in the, in the fifties.
In the - Fifties.
And I thought maybe one team might get to 60.
Last year it was what, 61 to 58.
I thought it'd be something similar.
But Orno has Orno had time of possession advantage.
They have, they they control the ball for a long time.
- Final this year, 56, 48 as the red riots again come away with their second straight state championship.
- And they never trailed.
It was tied up at 41.
But they took, they, they took care of business.
Take care of the basketball.
They played defense.
Outstanding defense in that last few minutes.
- And for the red riots that is go ball number nine.
They need to expand their trophy case.

- All right.
Two times State champs sir or no, congratulations.
One more time.
Gotta talk to Pierce first here.
You guys had to plan for a team that was scoring ridiculous amount of points all season.
How did you manage it today?
- I mean, defense is key and we've strived on that.
The whole tournament.
That's what we pride ourselves in.
Practice games, everything.
So to come out here, we just played our full 32 minutes of defense, then we came out on top right - When you watched them and you, I'm sure you saw a lot of scoring there.
Did you think Yeah, we can handle that.
I know that's a lot of firepower.
We can do that.
- Oh, we knew we could handle it.
I never have a doubt in any of these guys.
We're gonna come out and we're gonna give it our all and we can beat anybody.
Alright, - We're gonna get to Ben here.
Over here.
First of all, Ben, I think you're the one that had the, was it you or your brother that had the buzzer?
Beater Technically was a buzzer beater at the end.
It was.
It was you.
So technically you can say you had a buzzer beater in a state championship game, right?
Yeah.
It didn't matter.
But it did.
It still stayed.
Let's talk about what you did prepare for Oceanside area.
Same question really is what your partner had here.
I mean, you guys had to prepare for a firepower of, and you handled it well.
Yeah, - They were very good offensive team.
We watched them play, put 90 points up on a team from what we saw, the teams they were playing against weren't playing defense on them like they should have been.
We have the best defender in the state Will Francis and he, he put it to Carter tonight and he seemed pretty absent tonight.
But great players, both of those Galley boys and Deb Foster did a hell of a job.
Gave us a great game.
But you know, our, our defense always prevails.
So - That humbles you a little bit here.
The best defensive player in the state.
Do you go along with that?
- Yeah, I do.
I do.
- Tell us about, and this just a game that you guys didn't really dominate, but you, you held strong and then you just kinda held the lead.
You lost it, well you tied up around the fourth quarter.
You probably didn't even pay attention to that.
You just kept playing.
But what kinda held you strong toward the end - For sure.
Just keeping that defensive intensity up.
You know, our team doesn't really get tired like that, so we kind of just keep running, keep going, keep playing.
Defense hard.
Gotta keep a hand on those gall boys.
They could shoot.
Deb Foster played a hell of a game.
We just, we just had to keep going.
That was for sure.
We kept, we kept pushing.
- When you guys were preparing for 'em, did you compare 'em with any other team you had in Northern Main at all?
- Not really.
The only other player that I think was kind of compared to them was Chance Mercy, or, you know, the, the quick fast hit shoot drive, kind of do everything.
So for sure that was one.
- Very good.
Let's get coach in here.
Yeah.
Coach, can we, can we bring Coach in over here for a second?
For live to me?
Thank you.
Appreciate that.
All right, coach, coach, congratulations.
So, so did that.
I, I'm sure that exceeded expectations, but, but you said when you compared him from last year, it's a very different team.
How do they prepare?
How do they respond?
Well, - In terms of our response, I, I thought we showed great toughness.
Oceanside, every time it looked like we had a bit of a cushion, they would respond.
But to our guys' credit, the toughness of our guys on the floor, the way they compete at Crunch time, they stepped up, we made some big free throws, came up with some loose balls.
Just the little things that, you know, helped provide the margin.
At the end, - The biggest run that I saw all game was a six point run.
That was it.
And at first it was os Oceanside, then it was you and that was it.
Nippo Tuck the whole way.
Yeah.
- Yeah.
We're, although we size wise don't, aren't necessarily well matched.
The strength they have offensively and the strength of us defensively makes us a very competitive match.
'cause we both stress the other to us, to the utmost.
So the Oceanside community, they should be very, very proud.
That team, you know, to make it to state back to back state championships is a tremendous accomplishment.
We just happen to be fortunate.
Alright, - Well good.
Congratulations guys.
Bring it in here.
Mr. Walton, bring in here for a second.
'cause I'm, you wanna be part of this?
Oh yeah.
Everybody wants to be part of this here.
Guys.
Congratulations.
Two time champs.
Tell the camera what it's like to be two time champ.
Let's go.
- Very good.
Congratulations to the Oro Red riots.
