50 years after being saved, Pike Place Market is a role model for Seattle.
Columnist Knute Berger writes that on November 2nd, 1971, Seattle voters made one of the smartest decisions ever.
A decision made in defiance of the downtown business community and city hall.
It was the vote to save Pike Place Market, and create a 22 acre historic district.
At the time, planners argued that Seattle should keep only a little more than an acre of the market, while building high rises and putting more respectable stores in its place.
In retrospect it seems like a no brainer to preserve Pike Place, given the economic engine it has become.
The Pike Place Market community now reflects the diversity of a rich, multi-layered urban environment, while serving local farmers and artisans.
Berger writes, the market wasn't the obstacle to modern Seattle.
It has been a savior.
