We.
From the Cross Insurance Center in Bangor, it's the girls class C state championship between the old Orchard Beach Seagulls and the Dexter Tigers.
Well, good evening, everybody, and welcome to the Cross Insurance Center.
It's a day later, a couple days late, but a state championship basketball nonetheless.
The class C girls title game between the Dexter Tigers and the Old Orchard Beach Seagulls.
I'm Toby Nelson, joined in the broadcast tonight by Julie Venu Sinclair.
We welcome you in on the station to Maine Public Broadcasting for what we hope.
Julie is a really great championship basketball game tonight.
We hope and I think it will be.
Let's look at the two teams coming in.
Dexter coming in with just one loss in the season.
They pride themselves on a good size inside, but they can also score the ball pretty well this year as well.
That's accurate.
They pride themselves on defense, holding teams to 24 points per game.
Led by a junior center, six to each who's had many double double games.
And then you look on the other side, Old Orchard Beach coming in here with a miss basketball finalist and Elise McNair.
They want to get up and down the court, score a lot of points.
They do and they can.
She's averaging about 25 points per game during the season and ten rebounds.
Toby as a point guard.
They also have great athleticism and other guards who have the ability to score as well.
We look forward to this great match up.
The coach is standing by for older to beat Jim Baynes.
The third member of our broadcast team has him right now.
Jim.
All right Coach Blanton, welcome to Bangor.
I know you had the longest drive, but you got the newest building.
Still feel great to be in the state championship here.
Yeah, absolutely.
It's fantastic venue.
We don't care where we play.
Excited to be here.
All right.
Let's talk about to the Tigers a bit here.
My understanding is you've got the tempo on them but they've got the size on you.
What's going to be the difference here.
And definitely contrasting styles.
I think if we rebound, well we can run and got to make some baskets so we can extend our pressure when we need to.
So this time of year, it's about rebounding and making shots.
Right.
So we'll, hopefully have that recipe tonight.
All right.
Anything specific about, Dexter, when you looked at the video that concerned you the most?
And.
No, I mean, they they play some pretty tenacious, packed in pack line man to man defense.
And, we're going to have to be patient in spots and, and hit some open shots, which I think we can get was dribble drive and kick.
So.
Well good luck to you tonight.
Okay.
We'll talk with Coach Graham.
Just a minute.
All right Jim, thanks very much.
That's the old Orchard Beach side of things.
Julie, how did we get here for these two championship teams?
If we look at the old Orchard Beach Seagulls, they came in seeded number two with a record of 15 and three, scoring about 58 points per game and allowing 35 points per game in the season with a margin of plus 416.
They have not want to go back, but this is the first time they're competing for one.
And they won, games leading up to this game over Winthrop, Cantwell and Nyr.
On the other side, the Dexter Tigers come in seed number one, 17 and one record, scoring 43 points per game, allowing about 24 points per game with a margin plus 360.
Their last goal ball was to hunt in 2006.
In their wins were over Fort Kent Central and Penobscot Valley.
Yeah, I was much younger, had a little more hair back when they won their last, state championship in 2006.
We want to thank Maine basketball rankings for all of those numbers.
The second coach is coach Jody Grant of the Dexter Tigers.
Speaking of him, Jim has him right now.
Jim.
Okay, coach Jody Grant of Dexter here.
Let's talk about the contrast of styles here.
You got a great inside game.
They got great tempo.
Well, what do you see when you watch video that concern you the most.
Yeah.
That's it.
Want to get up and down the floor?
McNair is a very, very good basketball player.
They got some other kids that can go there.
They can shoot the three.
Space the floor.
Yeah.
We're gonna have our hands full here this evening.
All right, so anything in practice you worked on specifically to prepare for the kickoff?
Yeah.
Getting back in defensive transition.
Closing out on shooters, making sure we know where McNair is at all times and just trying to, you know, try to make life as hard as we possibly can to them, knowing that they are really good offensive team.
Okay, Jody, good luck to you.
Okay.
All right Jim, thanks very much.
So we've seen both sides of this one Dexter last winning in 2006.
They were last year in the championship game in 2017 they lost to a Monmouth.
We talked a little bit about it at the top of the broadcast here, Julie.
But the size with Maisie Peach inside for Dexter.
Once the ball goes down inside to her, she's really tough to stop.
She is.
And she has the ability to get offensive rebound put back.
So it's going to be key to box her out if you're the seagulls.
And on the flip side, Dexter worried about the speed, the quickness and the athleticism.
It'll hurt to beat Springs here.
They came up.
They were able to practice one time here.
But the Cross Insurance Center they came up last Tuesday expecting a Saturday game.
So it's really been a week since they've been up here.
But for Dexter they've been off since the previous Saturday as well.
So it's been a really interesting, time because of Mother Nature.
We've had a long, long wait in between games because at the end of the season, you know, you've been around high school basketball for many years.
You play so many games night after night after night, and then you have a long, long layoff like this.
I agree we're going to have a good one on our hands.
Looking forward to it.
Let's send it over to the table and get the participant to this one.
The public address announcer for game one of the state championship night is Bob Peter.
Championship game featuring the champions of Southern Maine, the seagulls from Old Orchard Beach High School with a record of 18 and three, and the champions of Northern Maine, the Tigers from Dexter Regional High School with a record of 20 and one.

You're invited to stand and remove your caps as the Dexter Regional High School Band, under the direction of Kim Brewer, honors our country with the playing of our national anthem.
And.
Now the starting lineups.
The national anthem was supposed to be Saturday at seven.
Were Tuesday at six.
And, Julie, we're ready to tip this one off.
We are.
I can't wait, Toby.
I think we have a chance to see it.
A really nice game.
Kind of a difference in two styles, but the last time these teams competed in the championship, they both got off to a hot start.
So who's going to get the first quarter hot start today?
You mentioned in the road to the goal Dexter beating Penobscot Valley in their regional championship game.
Old Orchard Beach knocking off North Yarmouth Academy.
That was an overtime game down in Augusta Elise McNair to jump center.
Macy peach jumping center for Dexter.
We're ready to go.
Sea of red to our far side and behind us it's a bunch of blue Seagull merchandise and the opening tip taken by Dexter.
The Tigers in the home.
Whites there.
The Northern Maine champion.
And they look to start things off right off is, Corson one of their strong players now?
She'll get it back on the left side comes up top.
So Old Orchard, the seagulls in their two three zone right now.
Julie, it's an act of two three zone as well.
And I'm sure they'll have a lot of focus and attention on peach in the middle of course.
And then up top is Paige.
And back to Corson.
Tigers the regional champs one loss in class C. That lone loss came to Penobscot Valley, and they split on the season and then played in the regional championship, much like Old Orchard with North Yarmouth Academy, along the baseline.
Nice pass off on the baseline.
The shot no good as Goodrow missed the rebound and foul.
Macy peach shows why she's so valuable inside with an offensive rebound.
She really is.
And it's going to be hard if you're Old Orchard Beach to box out.
But it is something they're used to.
They play this zone often.
But when you're not matched up man to man, it can be very difficult to have a perfect box out.
Foul on summer Saint Louis.
That's her first and the first in the team.
Or just about a minute gone by in this opening quarter.
First free throw for peach is good.
Always nice when you have your, players that play inside two free throws that well, it really is.
And a compliment to her.
She's had many of free throws throughout this tournament.
Peach just a junior battled knee issues last year.
It's come on strong this year.
We jinxed her as a second one is miss and the rebound.
Off to the seagulls.
They'll push the front court.
Here's McNair.
We'll hear her name a lot here tonight for old Orchard Beach Ferguson now for the seagulls.
It's a Saint Louis.
Dexter starts off and their traditional Man-To-Man defense.
Ferguson goes baseline.
Ball knocked away and stolen.
Peach kicks it out for the Tigers and turned into some offense in the front court with caution.
Great hands by Gaudreau there.
I mean just being an athlete and trusting your instincts to get that steal.
Jocelyn Page.
Ball back on the right side.
Old Orchard in the black uniforms.
First time they've ever been to a state championship game.
Their boys made it 8894 for the girls.
The first trip there.
It's always special with this group.
15 and three on the regular season, 18 and three through the playoffs.
Here's Pete kicks it off to Goodrow.
Working it around trying to beat the zone with quick passing.
Hannah Dean along the baseline.
Has a shot up off the glass.
No good rebound.
Picking up by Old Orchard Beach.
Down court.
This is Davis kickoff pass to the corner Ferguson tries three off the mark.
No good.
And the ball trickles out of bounds Dexter ball.
It may take the seagulls a little bit of time just to get used to that.
The court obviously in a state championship game both teams are going to be a little nerved up.
But I do expect them to settle into the game within the first few minutes, hopefully one of two games going on statewide.
The class B girls game happening at the Portland Expo this evening.
Also, one of the stations, the Maine Public Broadcasting, that's Ellsworth, the northern camp taking on the Southern Cats first Mountain.
And a first.
And that one is Spruce Mountain.
Making their first trip to the state final.
Goodrow pulls up, shot no good, a little bit too hard.
And the rebound off to McNair.
She's running the court for Old Orchard right down the lane.
Puts it up.
The runner no good.
And the ball pulled out by Baxter.
She was out of control.
Tigers coming the other way on the baseline.
Goodrow pull up.
Pop off the arc.
Can't get it to go.
Peach the rebound lays it up.
Looking to go.
So right off the bat we're seeing Payne really showing her work.
She really is.
That's where she gets going typically is on the offensive boards.
And in transition.
Again that's another angle to be boxing out perfectly on her three points for peach and the Tigers lead it three nothing.
This is Davis trying three skims the front rim Hannah Dean with the rebound and a foul Sarah Davis called for the reach in.
And we mentioned Macy Peach so often Hannah Dean is another post player really for Dexter who's just solid.
And she she really came up big I believe in that final game they had against PBS coach Dean plant for the old Orchard Beach Girl.
She's had a great season, a great year.
He was the football coach.
They won the eight man class.
Championship, a small schools championship.
And now coaching in the state class C girls championship game.
Really nice programs at Old Orchard Beach.
And I have to say, the Seagull might be the best mascot in the state.
I might have to agree with you there.
They like to, They like to say the gulls as well.
I like it on the baseline.
Dean, kick out as Goodrow puts it up off the window.
Can't get it to go.
Case for the Re the fight for the rebound comes down to Old Orchard is not too happy.
Rolling rolling to Saint Louis now McNair in the front court McNair the lefty for three.
That's off the mark.
No good trying to get it to fall.
She's a player who really can look to score in all different ways.
Step back threes pull up threes.
Deep threes.
Floaters eurostep.
You can't keep your eye off her if you're defending her.
Jocelyn Page now, Corson like.
Goodrow along the baseline they go down low.
Peach turns double team ball knocked away.
It goes out of bounds.
And the ball goes back to Old Orchard Beach.
So good job of collapsing that time on peach with the double team.
Yeah.
And with the two three zone you do have the ability to do that.
If she catches it on the block I wonder if they continue to look to double her on the block.
That could be a good defensive scheme for them.
I was doing a nice job with the pass, trying to get quick ball reversal.
McNair, the runner high off the glass, gets it to go.
She's on the scoreboard.
You don't see many players to take it right to peach.
I mean, a lot of times players will look to alter their shot and miss it.
And, she took it nice and high off the glass.
Beautiful shot.
The gulls on the scoreboard.
Just about five minutes gone by in this opening quarter.
Toby Nelson, Julie Sinclair from Cross Insurance Center, the class C girls state championship game on the station, the Maine Public Broadcasting Goodrow.
Straight ahead pay Metro running baseline as they go baseline to baseline as a pass knocked away by McNair.
But comes right back to page.
And in this zone it's very active.
And Dexter is very good at sharing the ball and taking a high percentage shot.
But right now they're sort of matching up.
They get good action if they pass at baseline.
They haven't looked much to pass it middle, but they almost are going to have to find those seams or look to dribble the gap.
Paige.
Old Orchard is fine with her 23ft away from the basket as been shoveling across the lane is going to be stolen out by McNair.
McNair coast to coast lays it in and that's good hesitation.
She loves the hesitate left.
Keep it with her strong hand or she has a nice strong powerful right to left cross and if she steals it, watch out.
She's off to the races for a run.
The ball goes out of bounds.
Stepping out of bounds.
Dexter.
And they turn back over to Old Orchard Beach.
So our first substitute coming in is Kenny Blatchford will check in for Blatchford, will check in for Old Orchard Beach and Summer.
Saint Louis will take a seat.
Two minutes to go in the opening quarter from the Cross Insurance Center.
Loud crowd behind us for Tuesday night.
I'll tell you what, Julie.
It's not a bad crowd.
Here it is.
And you consider how far Old Orchard has to come.
That one goes down the lane.
It goes out of bounds off Dexter.
Dexter's doing a good job.
They hang their hat on.
Really?
Being able to pack the paint.
They're doing a good job.
If the offensive player goes by him, they can trust that their defender teammate is going to be there to help them.
They're trying to take her defender off the dribble, floats it up and in.
He's got all six points and they've come from different ways to do it.
She's just so talented again.
Miss Maine finalist.
And right now we're getting a glimpse at why she is been awarded potentially a finalist for a big accolade like that.
Jocelyn Page off to Goodrow.
Down inside to Dean.
Really looking for peach with it.
The interior defense for Old Orchard doing a nice job collapsing.
And they do that again.
The double team and the ball stolen by Davis.
Davis with the steal.
Her team running the court.
It's Clarke now in the ball game.
Ball is we have a holding foul or tied up a foul on Old Orchard Beach.
Reaching foul on the seagulls.
They have a couple of post players for the seagulls.
One foul in the first quarter Kenny Blatchford called for the foul throw.
Coast explorer her first third of the team.
Just under a minute to go in the first quarter in A63 lead for Old Orchard Beach.
Corson tries three.
That's off the mark.
And rebound the putback.
No good by Dean but she's fouled.
And she'll head to the free throw line for two shots.
So an opportunity to earn a couple of the free throw line for Dexter.
That was impressive by Dean.
She actually boxed out on offense.
And players who do well rebounding off the track don't only need a buck.
So when you're in defense, but if you want to get some rebounds on the offensive end, that's exactly how she she pulled it off.
And McNair call for the foul.
The first free throw for Hannah Dean is good because she'll get one more.
Dean second.
That one's good as well.
So two of two at the line.
Tigers three of four in the first quarter.
And the lead is one for Old Orchard Beach with 40s to go.
Opening stanza from the cross center.
Davis.
With Clark.
And now McNair.
Free throw line.
Pull up.
Pop a soft touch for her.
That one's good.
She's got the friendly roll and all orchards.
Just so good at sharing the ball, moving the ball, doing dribble leaves like that.
It's just hard to to keep her in front of you.
Goals lead it by three.
Final seconds of this first quarter.
Corson now Goodrow six seconds to go.
Spins back to the middle.
Gives it back to corset.
Morrison takes a peek at the clock.
Throws it up at the buzzer.
That one is short in the first quarter.
In the books from the Cross Insurance Center.
Seagulls lead it by three.
We're back to the Cross Insuranc Production of high school basketball on Maine Public Television is made possible by people like you and by Sheridan Construction, a Maine company committed to building on their promise for over 75 years.

Dead river.com The University of Maine at Augusta committed to providing a quality, affordable education online and in person.
With two campuses and eight centers statewide.
At the Cross Insurance Center, Toby Nelson, Julie Sinclair.
While getting ready to put back into action in this class C championship game, Old Orchard Beach leading Dexter 8 to 5.
As we start the second quarter and you can see why Elise McNair is a finalist for Miss Maine Basketball.
You'll see exactly why.
And she has a very good defender on her and Abby Corson.
And she's still finding a way to have all the points, all eight points so far for Old Orchard coming in transition.
And then she's hit some jump shots as well.
Three point shot miss McNair there for the rebound.
Goes up the layup no good.
We got a whistle and a foul on Dexter.
That'll send McNair to the free throw line for two.
So we see it on the offensive side.
We see it there with the offensive rebound from McNair.
It's impressive I mean she she she lets the game come to her really.
But I think that's the difference in her game this year compared to last.
She's really knowing hey I got to step it up and bring it offensively.
Now keep in mind you can't forget about the other players because they also can hit the shots.
But this is what's making this team so special right now.
One of two with the free throw line.
Seagulls lead it by four.
Dexter jumped out to a three nothing lead, but it's been A92 run since then for Old Orchard Beach.
Paige for the Dexter Tigers trying to break this zone defense high post.
It's been now down low P turnaround shots.
Good.
That's the way to break it.
That's hard.
Way to stop it when you go high low directly in line with the hoop you're not going to stop that hook shot.
So peach with the basket makes it nine seven.
She's got five of their seven points.
Backdoor way of good at center.
Saint Louis side a nice little assist there.
One handed push pass with her offhand mind you I believe it was our offhand, but, Yeah, she's putting on a little show right now.
Hannah.
Quick reaching foul.
Tessa Ferguson called for the foul.
So a foul starting to mount up here a bit on Old Orchard Beach.
That's the 15 foul.
Oh two it is.
And we talk about Texas defense a lot.
Same with old Orchard Beach.
Just zone isn't like your typical two three.
It almost reminds me a Dean Smith point.
Point zone that he used to run back in the day.
It's very aggressive and prides itself on having pressure free throw line, trying to go down low, ball knocked away and stolen.
Taken out by McNair.
Doesn't have numbers, but it might not matter.
Right to the glass.
It's good.
And the foul in the open court.
She can do about anything.
I'm going to put my money on Elise McNair.
More than 50, 50% of the time.
She's going to hit that.
Whoo!
11 points for McNair inside air launch and at the free throw line.
Shooting the one shot foul.
Lee McNair trying to cap off the end one.
And the shot rattles in and out.
No good.
That's one thing.
She's not from the free throw line.
She's one for three.
That's it.
Outside of that she's doing great.
Still hasn't hit that three yet, but she's got that in the pocket to pass to the corner to low.
Goes off the fingertips of Goodrow out of bounds.
Turned over a ball back to Old Orchard Beach.
These turnovers are really starting to mount up right now for the Dexter Tigers.
It's going to be key for them to focus on taking care of that ball, making the simple pass she goes with the number two seed in southern Maine.
North Yarmouth was number one.
They knocked them off in the regional title game.
Ferguson off the glass.
Can't get it to go.
Rebound pulled down by Hannah Dean.
Tigers come the other way Dexter had that play scouted.
You could see about three people are on Elise McNair right then of course in with the ball timeout called by coach Jody Grant 32nd timeout here with 608 to go here in the first half.
And a reminder that most state final games are being streamed live and for free on Maine Public Facebook page, as well as Maine Public's YouTube page.

Yeah, streaming has just blown up and now we're glad we can stream these to you.
Bring them to you on live, on television, and on the stream as well on Maine Public Broadcasting.
Out of the timeout.
Dexter with the ball.
Goodrow baseline to Dean.
Dean tries to back away.
Dash shovels it across the lane.
Stolen by McNair.
He's one on one.
The other way as Corson gets back goes right across the lane, lays it in to McNair, recognizing the defense is actually trying to keep her from going left like she's had success.
And she's a player who could go both ways.
Old Orchard Beach now out to a eight point lead 15 to 7.
Goodrow looked at the three, didn't take it.
Jocelyn Page.
Here's peach at the high post.
Kill try three.
That's off the mark, but peach fights for the rebound.
Taken down by Old Orchard Beach.
Great inside position by summer.
Saint Louis it was.
And they are going to have to box.
Are out every time.
And a good looking shot for Dexter.
Here's Davis for the seagulls now.
Saint Louis drives peach picks her up, shovels it to the corner.
Davis for three.
Slam.
You have a least McNair leading with 13 points.
And the other role players also hitting their shots.
I mean, you might have a perfect storm of offense, right now for the the seagulls 11 point lead for the old Orchard Beach team at the free throw line.
Peach out to Goodrow.
Corson for the Tigers.
Back to Goodrow along the corner.
Four and a half to go in the first half.
The two three zone has been effective so far.
Goodrow for three.
He answers back after Ellie Goodrow can hit those.
She can hit the pull up.
She can hit the three and her team needed that.
But Pedro with the bucket that was a big shot.
That's it.
Back down to an eight point ball with just over four minutes to play in the first half.
Saint Louis has it stripped and stolen.
Goodrow with the steal to go along the left side.
Goodrow nice pass across the lane.
The layup is good.
What a pass and finish.
Led by the steal.
Big time plays by Kelly Goodrow little five nothing.
Run for Dexter.
They pull back to within six.
McNair taking her defender off the dribble Ferguson now in the corner at Saint Louis.
Saint Louis left open.
Decided not to take the three.
Ferguson's got it for Old Orchard Beach.
McNair drives the lane lays it up and gets it to go.
And she contested that time with peach and still able to get the shot in.
And you could see the frustration a little bit by Corson.
And I can hear it.
I mean they're so good even at those backdoor passes.
Credit to the offensive pass there in the lane shot.
No good rebound taken off by McNair McNair with 15 points in the first half.
Unofficially three minutes to go.
Gulls lead it by eight.
I'll second the unofficial.
And I got 52.
So we'll make it official.
Let's make it official.
There is the shot.
No good off the back rim for McNair.
And running the court for the Dexter Tigers is Abby Corson.
Down low, Hannah Dean in the lane.
Spins around.
Shot.
Can't get it to go.
Peach bites for the rebound.
Tipped out of bounds.
Seagulls ball I like the aggressiveness right there by Hannah Dean.
She will need to step it up for her team I think she'll have opportunities on the block.
Just as we saw Kate Clark Candy Blanch for a Blatchford checking in for Old Orchard Beach.
But before that we get a timeout called by the seagulls.
They'll take the 62nd timeout with 2.5 minutes.
239 to be exact, left in this first half of play, broadcast of the Maine State High School basketball Championships has been made possible by members since 1979.

239 to go here in the first half, Toby Nelson, Julie Sinclair with you from the Cross Center, and then a good one so far it has.
And I've been really impressed right now by Old Orchard Beach's defense.
You know, you can't really practice this type of two three.
Yes.
Let a that they have and where we've seen Dexter get into trouble a little bit.
So when they look like they're going to have to move, know that person's open.
All of a sudden they're just coming out of nowhere with their instincts, get in the steals and leading the transition offense out of the timeout.
Old Orchard Beach basketball.
They've led by as many as 11.
An 18 to 7 lead here in the first half Dexter had a three nothing lead.
That was their biggest lead of the game.
McNair out of the timeout.
This is Clark who came in before the timeout off the bench for coach Dean plant.
Ferguson.
They try to give it back to on the pass.
Blatchford pass knocked away and stolen.
Taken out by Dexter A couple good steals by Goodrow recently really helping her team out and we'll see if we can capitalize on the offensive end for Dexter along the baseline.
Little pull that pop that one's good for Goodrow.
Five points in the first half for Carly Goodrow keeping her team around the nice set.
Play two.
He had one for Lowe against that two three zone.
He has five points.
Macy peach with five a whistle a team control foul called on Old Orchard Beach.
Legal screen called on Cammy Blatchford.
I think our the home team fans behind us don't agree so much.
But yes, the officials in the crowd didn't think that was a foul.
It never is a foul if you're if you're on the home team.
Right.
So does the Dexter gets the ball back here trailing by six with 156 to go in the opening half.
At the half we have sportsmanship awards to hand out in a couple of different classes, so look forward to those.
Goodrow.
Except the dribble now Corson.
Hands it off the paint.
Goodrow steps in, pulls up for three off the front rim.
Can't get it to go.
Rebound pulled off by Old Orchard Beach.
Front court.
It's Davis now Ferguson Saint Louis she'll toe it up with three point land off the front rim.
Can't get it to go.
Taken out by Hannah Dean.
Racing to the front court is all.
Orchard sets back up in the two three zone.
Dawson.
At the high post.
Is Dean's able to come out and pick it up?
This is Paige.
Clark.
Right in her grill at the free throw line.
Been the kick out of it.
Now.
Off to Goodrow.
She wants three takes it off the back rim.
No good.
Rebound taken down by beach.
Will pull it out for the Tigers.
Way to keep it alive for Dean.
And she really got that open look by selling the shot fake facing the hoop.
And it led to an extra pass a high percentage baseline shot.
For Dexter.
Final moments of the first half six point ballgame trailed by as many as 11.
So the Tigers have a manageable deficit right now and then cut into it before the first half gone.
Sometimes with Dexter you wonder, are they waiting for the last shot?
Many times it's looking for a good shot.
It's Dean out to Paige for three.
It's off the front rim.
No good.
Rebound taken down by Old Orchard.
Up ahead to McNair from half court at the buzzer.
That one comes up short.
That's how the first half ends here from the Cross Insurance Center 15 first half points for Alex McNair.
Score at the half.
The Old Orchard Beach Seagulls 20.
The Dexter Tigers 14.
This is championship basketball on the station.

Moments.
So they are gorgeous.
Winning the sportsmanship award.
On the girls side, we'll have more sportsmanship awards to be handed out at the halftime of the boys game.
Speaking of the boys game coming up following this one, the class C championship game, the callous Blue Devils and the Dirigo Cougars.
A countless number one team in the North.
Here we go.
The number one team in the South, Dirigo, the defending state champions.
So we look forward to a good one.
In that one is I can't Lynn lawful join me on the boys call tonight of the class C championship game.
Julie, back to this one.
We see Old Orchard Beach out of the locker room.
A fairly early to start the second half.
And I would say for coach Dean Plante, he's going to be pretty happy with the first half of play.
They're playing loose really.
And a lot of the turnovers they forced because of their aggressive nature on D and yeah, I just think they're playing loose.
And their coach you saw at the beginning of the game, I think that he set the tone and the team is responding.
Dexter will be out here in just a moment.
We'll get the second half underway in just a moment.
Stein.
We'll take one final timeout here at the half.
When we come back, we'll go through the first half stats and get the second half underway at the half at Old Orchard Beach, leading Dexter by six from the Cross Insurance Center here in Bangor.

Look at some of the first half numbers there, Julie, from this first half of Dexter and Old Orchard Beach.
And if you look at it, the field goal percentage is a big difference for the seagulls.
They're eight for 11 field goal percentage 73% to 33.
And then when you look at the turnovers, the margin isn't that much of a difference.
But you could see right now when you're looking at these stats Toby there's a big difference just in the shooting percentage that's going on right now.
And that's the difference in the ball game shooting 73% versus 33%.
Both team 11 shots for Old Orchard, 12 for Dexter.
So not a lot Gibbs there.
But it is the makes versus the misses right now.
Let's see why old Orchard Beach has the lead at the half.
Speaking of leads at the half, the class B girls game is at the half in Portland and Ellsworth with a lead over Spruce Mountain in that championship game 32 to 15.
So the Eagles leading that one looking for their first state championship.
And on the girls side.
So that game going northern Maine's way right now anyway at the half and the boys game coming up in Portland following this one.
We'll see Oceanside, taking on Orono.
So those are the class B championship games.
We mentioned Kalis and Dirigo coming up next here on the stations of Maine Public Broadcasting.
And that'll put a wrap to the 20 2223 basketball season after this evening.
It's really sad when we think of it that way, but, it'll be two exciting nights for two teams.
Obviously two teams going home without the goal ball.
But, on the girls side and both the boys.
But, Yeah, just proud to have gotten this far.
Obviously last night.
Both Southern Aroostook teams winning championships on the D side, the girls and boys.
And in that last evening it was a South Portland boys and the Oxford Hills girls.
And they, of course, joined Lawrence and Brewer, who won the Class A's, which seems like so long ago.
That was last Friday night.
So before the storm hit last week, I bet these two teams feel like it seemed like so long ago.
Two I know if I was a coach for either one of these teams that have had to kind of drag it on, and I'm all about toss the ball up, let's go.
We don't want to think too much about this, but I'm sure they appreciate a little bit more preparation and rest.
Yeah.
Was another four days of waiting and preparation.
Now obviously some preparation, but also the waiting.
As Tom petty said, waiting is the hardest part.
And we'll see.
As a Dexter getting set to break the huddle, they'll have the ball to start the second half trailing by six.
And I think if your coach Jody Grant, you're actually glad you're down by six because they had some uncharacteristic turnovers.
They really weren't shooting well as we could see.
But the name of the game right now is Elise McNair for Old Orchard Beach.
She has 15 points.
And can't say it's easy to come up with a plan to stop her.
It is not Dexter Ball to start the second half.
So we switch up sides.
We'll see if this whoop is a little more kind for Dexter.
Page for the Dexter Tigers still facing the zone defense.
This is Corson.
Gage working the perimeter.
The free throw line.
Dean, off in the corner.
Goodrow and Campbell up on peach whenever they can is a summer.
Saint Louis is really bear the brunt of the responsibility.
In the middle of the zone.
She has.
And she's, main focal point is the box out to if the shot goes out and you get a reach in foul, it's going to be after the steal.
So the foul goes on.
Dexter.
Dexter is known to take that high percentage shot.
They did have a good looking shot for Corson.
They also probably want to slow down the pace and tempo.
But with that extended zone it can come up to bite you sometimes.
Ellie Goodrow, call for the foul.
Her second and the first on the team as we start the second half.
Here's McNair through the lane shot.
No good.
Got her own rebound to put up.
No good.
Got a third and and she's foul that time.
Dobie how fast was she coming off that hand off.
Like I don't even think you could attempt in the charge on that.
And good credit to her for going after her rebounds.
So at least McNair back to the free throw line 15 first half points for her leading the way for your first seven Jocelyn Page call for the foul.
McNair at the free throw line.
She's one of three so far.
First one is good for three points and can.
And the second shot's good.
There with two of two from the line.
And stretches the lead back out to eight.
Tigers trailed by as many as 11 in the first half.
They had a quick three.
Nothing lead but that was it.
Old Orchard Beach took A43 lead.
I don't think they have trailed since then.
Here's peach at the foul line off to Goodrow.
Orchards zone defense has been very aggressive and very good so far against Dexter.
Not allowing them great looks at the hoop.
Page.
Now peach along the baseline.
Skips it across to Corson.
Goodrow got a step on her defender.
Gets in the lane.
Shot off the front rim.
Can't get it to go.
McNair there for the rebound.
One of the few times we've seen a defender try to get in the lane.
Great pass underneath the shot.
No good for Saint Louis.
Found herself three two wide open that time.
Exactly.
And that's the name of their game.
Nice long court passes.
It's one of the few times they've been open.
Wide open for a layup like that.
But two minutes gone by in this third quarter.
Well Orchard leading it by eight.
Corson for the Tigers ball kicked away.
Comes right to peach now loose on the floor.
Picked up by Old Orchard Beach.
Good hustle by Ferguson to get on the floor there.
Help her teammate out back there to the front court.
Looks down low to Saint Louis.
She saves it in and swings it up to Davis for three.
Yes, Sarah Davis, her second three on the game, has six points.
Got to find her.
It's a five nothing run to start the quarter.
And a timeout called by the Dexter Tigers with 524 to play here in the third quarter.
It's an 11 point ball game.
High school quiz show Maine season six is about to begin.
16 teams from across Maine are competing to see who will be this year's champion and bring home the $1,000 prize.
Tune in for the season premiere on Thursday, March 23rd at eight, right here on the stations of Maine Public Television.
A great start to the quarter here for the old Orchard Beach Seagulls you like.
They really looked loose.
They looked like they've been to the gold before.
Really.
And it credit to them, it's their defense a little bit that set the tone.
They're really converting I feel on those turnovers that are coming up is just some of the fans enjoying some Dippin Dots today.
You ever had those?
I have not a huge fan.
Oh I don't eat it I concept oh I understand kids love them but they just yeah just go get a cup of ice cream.
You know I feel like I need to be in outer space to eat that.
Here's one of the t shirts we were talking about before.
The seagulls t shirts, the fear the flock at the front has actual character of a seagull.
Yeah, and leaves your hat as your hat.
So your hair.
Right.
You look like your head is the head of the seagulls.
Great.
Dexter, ball!
Out of the time.
Out from midcourt.
Jillian Poliquin checking in for Dexter.
So, a sub coming in for the Tigers.
Harlequin with it for Dexter.
After Gaudreau at the free throw line.
Dean Ball knocked away and picked up by Old Orchard Beach.
This is Davis.
Davis picks it up.
We get a whistle and a traveling violation.
Now, Davis probably isn't used to leading the transition, but, great hands by her.
I just can't compliment the zone enough.
It looks simple, but it's active and it's extended.
It really trying on Dexter side to get Gaudreau running baseline.
I almost wonder if you could put her in the middle of the court and have her face it.
Peach looking backdoor and knocked away is Paula Quinn is coming off the weak side and it's stolen out.
This is McNair Whistle player control a foul called on older to beat on McNair.
Good heads up play by Corson to recognize she's at the spot before her offense took a nice little charge to number three.
Ellis for her sons.
That's her second and the first on the team here in the second half.
Corson.
They have extended the zone a bit as they're providing pressure there near midcourt.
Dean has it knocked away hands back the court to Goodrow.
Excuse me now.
Corson.
Harlequin to Goodrow.
Steps in, pulls up with a shot off the back rim.
No good.
The rebound cleared out by McNair.
Got just done that a couple of times.
It's open.
I think she should continue to look for that shot here.
Inside Davis out to Saint Louis.
Updates on the three point shot drive gives it back to Davis.
Three from the corner.
That's off the front rim.
No good.
She's had the hot hand has two three so far in this one.
Yeah I don't blame her for taking that open look.
Harlequin down low to peach.
Skips it across the lane and right back to Dean.
She's wide open.
Had she faced the hoop and there was a step behind.
And just didn't turn quick enough, here's Goodrow.
Harlequin now for Dexter.
Picks up the dribble.
He's got Hattie Roy right in her face.
Roy doubles down on peach.
You watch her every time the ball goes away from her.
She doubles down to peach when she comes high.
Post four set up top now Paula Quinn there really trying to get it inside for a look.
It seems like that's their scheme right now because the outside shooters aren't really looking for the three as much.
This is Dean baseline.
Now Paula Quinn.
Old Orchard Beach fans clapping behind us.
They're excited to see the defense being played because not giving Dexter a lot of great looks.
Double-Team Goodrow along the baseline knocked away goes out of bounds off of Decatur.
So Julie the Tigers ran about a minute and a half off the clock and they get nothing to show for it.
And that's the tough thing right now.
You know they want the tempo.
They want to slow it down.
They want to limit maybe points.
But you yourself have to score those points.
So, it's fun to hear Old Orchard behind us getting ramped up because usually you're frustrated.
You want them to try to score, but they're like, hey, we're up.
Feel free to hold it out.
Roy for Old Orchard Beach hands it off to McNair.
Gives it back to Ferguson.
He'll try one for three and gets it.
Sets up Ferguson for three.
We have two different players hitting the three.
Three other players in the scoring column, on top of 17 point performance so far for at least McNair and the ball knocked away and stolen by old Orchard Beach.
McNair for the seagulls.
As a ball goes out of bounds off of Dexter.
Just over two minutes to go here in the third quarter.
Toby Nelson, Julie Sinclair with you from the Cross Insurance Center in Bangor.
Piece Kate Clark coming in.
She comes in and Roy will take a seat for coach Dean plant.
I feel like we watched Dexter defend.
We're used to them really keeping players in front of them.
But the movement that Old Orchard has in their ability to pass the ball, handle, it's hard to keep them in front.
Saint Louis dribbles back up top and now she'll just be content to dribble.
The basketball team leads it by 14.
Coach Grant says come on out and get her.
Peach comes out to guard.
Now a quick double team off into the corner.
This is Davis.
Saint Louis and the three point shot comes up short.
That one taken by Clark.
And the rebound out by Dexter.
Goodrow into the front court.
Coach Jody Grant's kind of yelling at peach to post.
I think he wants to get her on the inside.
There's a three point shot good by courts and big shot for the Tigers.
Huge shot for the Tigers.
That's the first basket of the half.
Took off about seven minutes to score.
And they trail it by 11 2817.
One minute to go in the third quarter.
Saint Louis up top.
McNair comes to get the ball on her.
Is it back to Saint Louis as the seagulls spread the floor?
Off into the corner, Ferguson.
Guarded by Goodrow and Saint Louis.
Gets it back.
Time ticking away here in the third quarter.
Force and working hard defensively to try to deny the ball.
Back to Elise McNair here.
Now she's got it back.
McNair drive folks on up off the window.
What a tough shot.
Wow.
And when you deny her she's going to read that she can curl or go back door.
She's just so savvy.
She gets the game and she has good instincts.
13 point ball game.
Here's Paula Quinn with six out to Courson Morrison tries to find some space.
Throws a three up at the buzzer.
That one falls short.
And what a corner for the old Orchard Beach Seagulls one quarter to go in the state championship game.
Old Orchard leading it by 13.
We're back to the Cross Insurance Center in just a moment.

Hans Cross and Insurance Center Toby Nelson, along with Julie Sinclair, Jim Baynes are sideline reporter.
We'll hear from him after the game here this evening.
Our director of this evening, Frank Welch.
Kirk Chadbourne at the table.
And the fourth quarter Julie underway, Old Orchard Beach leading it by 13 points.
They had a third quarter.
They are in this championship game 10 to 3.
In that third quarter.
And all the tempo is there way.
Dexter doesn't really have an answer quite yet for their offense.
They only had 2 or 3 points actually was it was three points three quarter and a three pointer by Abbie Corson.
That was it.
It was a six point game at the half.
It's 13 right now.
And Old Orchard Beach running a little clock here is they'll see if they can get something.
Maybe back door if they can get McNair on a one on one type action to the hoop.
The feeling when they want to turn it on, they will.
But purposefully taking time off the clock.
This is Roy running just a basic wheel out front, and a pushing foul on Dexter is back near fouled out for Dexter.
Down 13.
They will have to come up with some type of plan, whether it be getting to the line like this foul is on course and that's her second and the third on the team here in the second half.
Here's McNair.
Old Orchard leading it 30 to 17 in this class C final.
Trying to win their first ever Gold ball in their first ever Trippier.
The drive and the kick out pass.
This is Davis Saint Louis on the drive Davis takes it right to the glass.
The good Davis is having herself a game.
Eight points so far.
Great attack to the rim there taking the good looking shots that they're getting within their weave offense.
Up to a 15 point ball to year for Old Orchard Beach.
Paige is it the course it peach comes to the high post as Roy picks her up.
Page inside the Dean kick out Corson.
Corson takes three off the back rim.
No good.
Long rebound chased out by Old Orchard Beach.
One thing you're not seeing is peach really touching the ball.
You know now no rebounds.
And she's actually looking fatigued having to run that triangle constantly when they're in their zone.
Offense.
This is McNair out to Saint Louis.
Approaching the six minute mark here in the fourth quarter.
And a reaching foul on Peach I don't see that as frequent so far away from the hoop.
She's pressuring the ball the six to center bases.
Saint Louis handles the ball pretty well.
So as she can alleviate some of the ball handling duties from McNair.
Speaking of that, she's got to get it right back with Corson on her.
So crafty.
The left hander out there.
Makes it look easy.
Ferguson now Davis and she travel.
She knew it.
As soon as she picked the ball up she did.
It's almost looked like she wanted to pass to someone in the corner that was non-existent.
So the ball turned over and it goes back to Dexter trailing by 15 points.
Just under six minutes to go.
Corson off the page now for the Tigers.
Down low to peach.
Turns in the lane.
Shot.
No good.
Rebound taken off by McNair.
And maybe the first time she's touched the ball here in the second.
It's really the first time in the game she hasn't had many touches either Toby Ball knocked away as McNair Corson with a steal.
It's almost like they needed to hit and have enough outside shots in order to open up that middle, but we're just not seeing many looks from the perimeter for Dexter Goodrow in the corner.
Old Orchard has done a nice job perimeter defense wise.
And they've done a really nice job on peach not allowing her good looks.
There's Corson for three around the rim and in to the three is good a 32nd timeout called by coach Jody Grant Abby Corson second three.
And she needs to continue to look for those if she wants her team to cut the lead.
Take a look at that three point shot here by Corson.
You know, a Maine high school basketball fan who is out of state or even out of the country that, no, they can watch any of these state final games that we broadcast for free on the website.

You can find them all at Maine public.org.
Now the on demand right after the game you go back and watch us six fantastic broadcast.
Easy to get to it and can watch as many times you'd like.
Five minutes to go.
12 point ball game Dexter comes out with some full court pressure back there, guarded by a Corson.
Gets pizza up the court.
That's what they want.
The quick shot no good.
The rebound pulled off by Dexter.
So the Tigers get what they want.
The quick shot in the miss.
You're exactly right.
And, it's a it's a gamble for McNair.
But the defense was there to make that shot.
The this is peach at the free throw line.
Kick out to Corson.
Goodrow hit by her defender.
Ball knocked away and stolen.
Taken out by Davis.
Davis is doing a little bit of everything today.
Tigers have outscored Old Orchard Beach by one this quarter.
The problem is they trailed by 13 coming into it now blocking foul on Dexter.
Oh check and be the team's fifth foul.
So two away from a one on one opportunity for a first Hannah Dean call for the foul.
That's her first fifth on the team.
That three point shot put up short.
No rebound taken off by Dexter.
Not too sure that's the shot they wanted this point it isn't.
They can afford it though with a 12 point lead.
Just.
Paige Goodrow now peach.
Peach Karen gives it up.
Top another three.
That's off the back rim.
No good.
And the rebound pulled off by Old Orchard.
Halfway through the fourth quarter.
Saint Louis out front four Old Orchard Beach.
Peach on her and now reaching foul six foul.
So the next one and that means old Orchard shoots from the free throw line.
But for Dexter, the pace of the game they may have to foul right now to set the line.
Yeah, I'd agree we could see right now they're purposefully seagulls.
Not going to look to score and really pull it out.
Forcing that foul opportunity.
Here's McNair.
She'll take it right to the glass.
That's good.
But with a foul shot.
Yeah.
She got tapped on the head a little bit there.
A little.
And one opportunity.
21 points for McNair in this championship game 34 to 20 down low.
Peach turnaround shot.
No good fight for the rebound.
Peach gets it back puts it up.
Can't get it to go.
Comes down a danger for it.
Up.
Off the glass and in and draws the foul.
Good job by Dean and I.
My eye right now is I think on Jocelyn Page.
She's not sure where she's hurt.
But during that whole action she stopped competing because she's playing somewhere Harlequin coming in.
So Gillian Polokwane checking in and you're right.
Julie Jocelyn Page checks out at the free throw line.
Hannah Dean to try to cap off a three point play, and that shot is rounded off.
No good.
So she missed the free throw.
3422 at 12 point game three minutes.
Definitely are going to have to look to foul early or create a trap and steal situation.
Now there's the foul.
Addison Sarah Davis to the free throw line.
Pass up astronomical 23 Hannah Dean called for the fouls.
Her second.
Davis is yet to attempt a free throw.
She has eight points in this championship game.
So Sarah Davis at the free throw line.
The front end of the one and one is good.
Free throws are critical at any time of the game, but especially at this time when you can really start to build on this lead, when the scheme is to foul, to hopefully get the ball back, it's not going to go in the other team's favor, hit the foul shots, shot is short and we get a foul in the rebounding action on Old Orchard.
But Team Foul was only their third so they can't afford that foul.
And a 32nd timeout called by coach Dean plant.
So a record with three minutes to go in this one.
He really wants to set it up for the stretch drive here with the 13 point lead.
And it's going to be hard because scoring has been a bit of a challenge for Dexter, but we'll see what can happen if they can hit it.
Three right now, it may help to see on this replay here.
Oh this is the player the go to player a little tap on the head.
And once Elise McNair, if you've tuned into this game you've seen her score just about every little wax shot outside when she's needed to.
But really a great job on the drive.
Good body control.
She runs the floor very well.
Solid, solid player.
That's why she's in this main basketball finalist Sierra Carson from Oxford Hills and Lizzie Gruber from, Gardiner.
The other two finalists for that award, I believe, all play together.
So a tight group, exciting talent in the state will see.
Gets it.
I think in one more week that yeah, it'll be awarded McDonald's All Star weekend.
Of course.
And for Dexter.
Trailing by 13 points in this championship final.
Here's peach in the lane.
Shot rattles out.
No good rebound pulled off by old Orchard beach.
Shots just aren't falling.
We saw at halftime.
They're shooting well at 33%.
And I don't know if it's much better Davis fouled.
So that'll send her back to the free throw line for another one and one.
This one on Jillian Pollack one.
Oh that's really important in your first two games aimed at a third.
She wanted one team foul and the free throw for Sarah Davis.
That one short.
So leaving a few on the table right now for Old Orchard Beach.
Goodrow off to Corson.
Goodrow with Corson left open for three.
It's off the mark.
No good.
McNair fights for the rebound.
Goes out of bounds.
It'll stay with Dexter, but time ticking away.
Julie just 205 left.
Two minutes away from the goal.
Ball.
Though ball is made its appearance on the table.
In the lane.
The shot all round and in for Dexter.
That one goes in for Kelly.
Goodrow.
It's probably Kelly's third attempt.
Going middle this time going with her left hand and never too late to hit one of those.
That's a Ferguson conference.
That's a one thing.
Oh, boy.
Sure doesn't want to do is stop the clock and allow Dexter to score as a free throw by Goodrow is off the mark.
No good to around and out.
Rebound pulled off by McNair.
Under two minutes to go.
McNair into the frontcourt.
Here's Roy and now Davis.
Gives it to Saint Louis.
Peach out on her.
And now she reaches in and fouls.
It's going to stay really for Dexter at this point.
If it's anyone but McNair, you probably are going to have to foul.
I'd agree.
And that has been the theme probably the last 3 or 4 possessions.
That's the third on Peach Summer Saint Louis with two points in this championship final and the free throw off the mark.
No good.
So they have missed their last three from the line.
They missed all the front ends of the one and one.
In the corner it's Paula Quinn now up top to courts and an old orchard beach is fine with the ball that far away from the hoop.
And they just don't want a foul.
Goodrow foul on old Orchard on Ferguson.
I'll call her for the hand check.
Probably more like don't want to follow the shooter, but right now they do have a few to give to the 15 foul.
So no one and one yet.
Paula Quinn in bounds.
Here's a guy drove for Dexter off as.
Oh.
Almost looks like it might have been a jump ball.
Or it could have been either even a travel.
But it was a nothing.
Coach Dean plant gave a little dynamic player there, but not as angry.
Of course, with the time and score right now.
Yeah, this is a tie game.
It'd be a little different story.
Maybe peat fires it across the lane.
Goodrow ball knocked away by McNair under a minute to go.
Ball goes out of bounds off of Old Orchard Beach down to 50s.
So Tigers just taking so much time off the clock.
And the Tigers want to score.
And it's not easy against this, dynamic two three zone in the lane.
Goodrow double team kicks it out.
Corson back to Goodrow.
And it's a long three point try by Clawson.
That one comes up short.
The ball goes out of bounds.
It'll be turned over at Old Orchard Beach with 35 seconds to play here in this Championship final.
And a timeout called by coach Dean play.
That's going to allow the Seagull fans to come to life behind us.
And why not?
They're going to, 35 seconds away from their first goal basketball on the girls side.
Yeah.
And if you're coach Dean planet, gosh, 100% record ain't too bad, 35 years ago, their boys team won a championship in 1988, the old Orchard Beach Boys knocking off Fort Fairfield at Augusta.
And in 2023, it's getting closer to the old Orchard Beach Girls, winning their first ever championship.
You see the smiles coming out and like we saw the fans on their feet already.
Probably a little over two hour drive up to Bangor.
At least McNair McNair's been good for business for the old Orchard Beach Seagulls.
21 points in this championship final averaged almost 30 points prior to this in the playoffs, which is just impressive.
A bright future ahead for her as she's committed to go attend Bowdoin College and play basketball there.
I definitely could see her contributing ball to bounce.
It'll stay old Orchard Beach and Bowdoin with a tremendous women's basketball program led by another Maine.
That's right, I can Phelps.
Really basketball in general in the state right now is in pretty good shape.
When you look at the the colleges and universities around the area.
And it's alive and well in Old Orchard Beach, Davis with it 20s to go in the state final out to Ferguson, Saint Louis.
The goals are going to take home a championship.
This is McNair here by her defender.
And she just wants to dribble out the clock.
Is McNair with it.
Time ticks away.
And for the first time in school history, the old Orchard Beach girls basketball team can call himself state champions.
Hats off to Old Orchard Beach coming in ranked number two coach Dean plant and his assistants Shauna Tolley, Steve Lambie, Keith Floyd, Jason Webber.
You just won yourself a gold ball.
They did it on the defensive end.
Their two three zone was stifling tonight for the old Orchard Beach Seagulls.
Dexter never really could get the offensive flow going.
They hit shots when they needed to.
And it wasn't always McNair Davis with a couple of big three point shots.
The Ferguson three pointer.
So they hit timely shots and the defense did the rest for him tonight.
They did.
They had great steals some transition layups lower scoring than they're used to.
But the defense they set defense wins championships.
And yeah all hugs and smiles on their end I get a chance to cut down some more nets.
Seagulls will head to the east side of the Cross Insurance Center right now and rip down the nets as ladders are out there, ready to go.
Now all they get to do is clean those, and we didn't get to see the whole picture today, obviously, but the team defense aspect for Old Orchard, team offense, they just move the ball.
They're athletic.
Good leadership.
Cleary and Elise McNair going up to pull down the nets.
They have quite a few seniors on the team.
Some are Saint Louis, Elise McNair, Cammy Blatchford, Maddie Dow, Bella Ignagni.
And so, old Orchard Beach, getting ready to twirl him around up top like this is a lot easier cut down than Augusta is.
There's no, scissors involved.
And then they are old Orchard Beach for the first time in school history.
On the girls side, they're state champions.
So congratulations to coach Dean plant and his crew.
They came to Bangor.
It's going to make the 140 mile trip back home much easier tonight I think.
Oh, a lot easier I they may not sleep tonight.
I'm sure they'll be so excited.
So I guess the four day wait was worth it for Old Orchard Beach is.
Remember this game was scheduled for Saturday.
Mother nature pushed it to tonight at Old Orchard Beach.
Midweek they come to the Cross Insurance Center and they win a class C state championship.
They made it look easy and I hats off to Dexter to you know, I think to come this far in their season.
They have quite a bit returning.
I have a feeling they they'll have a chance to go up, for a championship again.
Two seniors, Jocelyn Paige and Jill, Jillian.
Paula Quinn.
A bulk of their offense coming back, but with Peach Goodrow coming back and Corson coming back, they've got a good nucleus to build around for coach Jody Grant.
So not all is lost.
Although it.
I'm sure it's tough.
It's tough when you get to this, situation and you're one game away from winning a state championship.
But Old Orchard Beach, takes on the gold ball.
They'll take it home in just a matter of moments, as the awards will be handed out just a second.
Okay.
So game one of our.
Doubleheader is in the books.
The.
Send it over to the scorers table for the award ceremony.
Bob Ethan will handle that for the Maine Principals Association right now.

Congratulations.
Red champion off in approximately 15 minutes in the boys Class C state championship game.
The seagulls I've seen since I dropped by French fries out in the McDonald's parking lot a couple weeks ago.
That is the most impressive one liner I heard today.
How long did you work on?
Just thought of that coming up.
That's a good one.
So we'll throw that one out there and see Old Orchard Beach getting their championship pictures on the court.
When we come back to the Cross Insurance Center, we'll hear from the participants.
We'll talk to the state championship winners, the old Orchard Beach Seagulls, final score, Old Orchard, the 35, the ducks, the Tigers 24.
The gulls.

A win for Old Orchard Beach.
The class C girls champion.
So they come north and they're bringing a gold ball back to the trophy case at Old Orchard Beach High School.
So it has been quite a season for this old Orchard Beach team.
They lost their first game of the year loss to Traip Academy to open up the season.
Lost a couple of games midway through the season.
But Julie, you were saying earlier today you saw an article where they just, they kind of had a come together meeting with a team and they really found a way to get this thing the ship righted.
Yeah.
It was a captains led meeting that, led them to talk more about their energy and what they can control.
And they never look back after that.
And they didn't look back here in this championship game tonight at 11 point win over the Dexter Tigers.
Let's send it over to Jim Baynes.
He's got that victorious group of seagulls Jim you know I say it every year.
It's always an honor to be part of a state championship celebration.
Especially when it's their first goal.
All right seagulls congratulations.
Elise, very first off, I mean, your last game senior year, did you get a double?
Double?
And it's going to go well.
How could he let him go?
I don't think it can.
This is an amazing group of girls, and I'm so glad I got to do it with, you guys.
I'm really going to miss them next year.
Tell us what it was like growing up with this group right here.
I mean, you're in a town that never had a global and, girls basketball.
And, what did it start to become possible?
You think that this could happen?
You know, I think it's always been a topic of conversation.
I mean, since we are middle school, it's always been the dream to bring it back together.
And I think we just emphasized that this year.
I mean, we knew we could do it from the get go.
It was just a matter of actually putting in the work to do it.
And we did obviously.
Good to have you, fellow senior Summer, over here as well.
I mean, and as you said, what a wonderful feeling of what a wonderful work all the way.
But let's talk about this game right here.
I mean, you guys had great control the whole game.
Now, do you blame them not play?
Do you do you credit coach for that?
Do you, credit, the hard work.
What do you credit?
I credit coach for that one.
And just like you said, Hay's in the barn.
Once we know what is supposed to be our scout, that's what we follow.
So that's.
He says that all the time.
Yeah.
Okay, well, here's a time to embarrass your question.
What other stuff does he say that, that, you could share with her?
That's that we can say on the air, just soup to nuts.
I don't he's in the barn.
Yeah.
Very good.
Let's do this.
Tell us about what you prepared for for Dexter here.
Now that, that zone that was just stopped him right there.
Is that a typical thing you've been running all season?
That's like our main defense that we run.
We don't really run much.
Anything else because that just works so well for us.
You got to get the junior in here.
Sarah.
First of all, let's talk about, you know, the leadership the seniors have brought to you over the year.
You still got another year.
But, what have you learned from that?
More than anything.
They're very strong.
They help include everyone.
They give us really good pep talks all the time before our games.
They help us get pumped up and prep for games.
Very good.
Now, in that fourth quarter.
Yeah, you only put five points on the board, but I'm going to guess you really didn't care because that wasn't the goal.
Yeah.
It was so so what was pushing more.
They just make sure you, keep up the hard defense and whatnot.
I think it was just the one at the end of the game.
I mean, we didn't want the rest of them going on a run through like stupid mistakes or just turnovers.
Obviously defensive intensity was emphasized in our huddles.
All right.
Got to get coach playing run.
Quick word.
They're telling me to wrap it up, but I got to give you an opportunity to tell us how great it's been working with this team this year.
Oh, they just they they come to work every day.
I mean I don't think gosh, we've been it feels like 16 weeks and, they here every day and they missed a bunch of good quotes they could use tonight.
But that's all right.
You know, we saw all week they were talking about their defense, how intense they were.
And we Friday what we do defensively.
And these guys, we we had a plan and they executed it better than we ever could have drawn it up.
So kudos to these guys.
They were awesome.
Very good ladies.
Bring that and bring that gold ball.
And this is your moment right here.
Tell the camera what it's like to be state.
Yeah.
Oh a gold ball heading back to Old Orchard Beach.
And Julie for coach Dean plant.
It's been quite quite a year so far It has put me on his staff because, he's getting it done in multiple sports.
Football and basketball.
He's a state champion in both.
So that's going to wrap up coverage of game number one here from the Cross Insurance Center a win for the old Orchard Beach Seagulls.
Final score tonight.
The seagulls 35.
The Dexter Tigers 24 I want to thank everybody involved.
