SO WE ARE REALLY LOOKING AT THIS KIND OF ONE-STOP HEALTHCARE MODEL WHERE OUR OLDER ADULTS CAN COME IN AND SEE A NUMBER OF CONNECTED HEALTHCARE PROVIDERS AND GET THEIR CARE IN ONE PLACE.
SO THE IDEA IS TAKING CARE OF OUR PATIENTS WHERE THEY NEED THE CARE MOST WITH A FOCUS ON PREVENTION AND A DESIRE TO KEEP THEM FROM HAVING TO ACCESS THE E.D.
FOR THAT PRIMARY CARE ACROSS THE STREET.
WE ARE STARTING OUT WITH REGULAR HOURS, BUT DO LOOK TO EXPAND OUR HOURS.

IF THOSE ARE ADDITIONAL PROBLEMS FOR THOSE FAMILIES, OUR SOCIAL WORKERS, CASE MANAGERS ARE WORKING TO MAKE SURE THOSE NEEDS ARE ADDRESSED SO PEOPLE CAN BE HEALTHY, KIDS CAN ABOUT TO SCHOOL.
THEY CAN CONTRIBUTE AS PART OF THE COMMUNITY.
THERE IS A SIGNIFICANT INVESTMENT TO BRINGING THE NAPPI WELLNESS INSTITUTE FROM A DREAM TO FRUITION.
IT BEGAN WITH THE DEDICATED GROUP FROM UPSTATE APPLYING FOR A GRANT.
SO THE INITIAL GRANT RELATED TO HEALTHCARE REFORM WAS FOR $70.4 MILLION AND THEN THAT WAS MATCHED ADDITIONALLY BY A COMBINATION FROM NEW YORK STATE DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH AND DASNY FOR AN ADDITIONAL $70.4 MILLION.
I THINK THE IMPACT OF THE WELLNESS INSTITUTE IS SIGNIFICANT FOR THE SYRACUSE COMMUNITY AND FOR CENTRAL NEW YORK FROM ITS INCEPTION WITH THE CONSTRUCTION, EITHER CREATING OR CONTRIBUTING TO LOCAL JOBS, THERE WERE OVER A THOUSAND PEOPLE INVOLVED IN THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE BUILDING.
IN ADDITION, IT HAS BEEN ESTIMATED THAT FOR EVERY ONE DOLLAR INVESTED IN THE CONSTRUCTION, CREATED A $7 ECONOMIC IMPACT FOR THE COMMUNITY.
THIS BUILDING IS THE FIRST WELL CERTIFIED BUILDING IN ALL OF NEW YORK STATE FOR A HEALTHCARE INSTITUTION.
SO WELL CERTIFIED MEANS THAT THIS BUILDING IS A HEALTHY ENVIRONMENT OR PROVIDES A WELL ENVIRONMENT, NOT JUST FOR THE PATIENTS BUT FOR THE STAFF THAT WORKS HERE.
SO FROM LIGHTING TO WINDOWS TO WATER QUALITY, TO THE FOOD THAT WE SERVE, EVERYTHING IS FOCUSED ON MAKING SURE THAT IT'S A HEALTHY ENVIRONMENT, WHICH IS IMPORTANT IN RETAINING STAFF.
>> I THINK THE BEST COMPLIMENT WE GET FOR ANY OF OUR NEW SPACES IS THAT IT DOES NOT FEEL LIKE A HOSPITAL SPACE.

THE LAST THING I'LL FOCUS ON IS THE TRENDING DATA IS INDICATING THAT THEY MERGING WORKFORCE, WILL 85% BE FILLED WITH WOMEN, MILLENNIALS OR YOUNGER AND PEOPLE ARE COLOR AND MANY ORGANIZATIONS HAVEN'T PREPARED THEMSELVES, THE CULTURE OF THE ORGANIZATION, TO RECEIVE THAT WORKFORCE.
SO OFTEN WHEN I'M SEEING TENSION AROUND PRODUCTIVITY, IT'S AROUND ISSUES THAT WE ARE GENERICALLY CALLING DIVERSITY ISSUES.

HEMLOCK, THEY PUT INTO THE P TWIG AND SUCK OUT THE STARCHES THE TREE HAS STORED FOR THEIR OWN USE.
HEMLOCKS MAKE THEIR NEW GROWTH AT THE END OF THE TWIGS SO THEY CAN'T GET THE SAP OUT TO MAKE NEW GROWTH AND WHEN THE OLD NEEDLES DIE, WE THINK THE TREES STARVE.
>> HEMLOCKS ARE WHAT WE CALL A FOUNDATION SPECIES.
IT'S THE FOUNDATIONAL SPECIES IN THAT ECOSYSTEM THAT ALL THE OTHER PLANTS AND ANIMALS ACTUALLY RELY ON IN THAT FOREST.
SO IT'S NOT JUST THE TREE THAT IS DECLINING.
IT'S ALL THE BIRDS, ARTHROPODS ASSOCIATED WITH THE TREES, STREAMS ARE WARMING UP IMPACTING THE FISH SPECIES AND THE TREES.
WE ARE LOSING AN ENTIRE ECOSYSTEM THAT IS ESSENTIALLY IRREPLACEABLE.
>> ONE OF THE REASONS WE ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT THIS IN NEW YORK IS THAT WE HAVE MORE EASTERN HEMLOCK THAN ANY OTHER STATE IN THE U.S. AND MORTALITY WITH THIS PEST IS SLOW BUT VERY HIGH.
>> HEMLOCKS ARE REALLY BORE TO WATER QUALITY AND IN THE FINGER LAKES REGION AND A LOT OF PLACES THAT THEY GROW BECAUSE THEY HAVE A SHALLOW ROOT SYSTEM AND ABLE TO ABSORB THE NUTRIENTS, THEY SLOW DOWN SNOW MELT IN THE STREAM SLOWING DOWN THE DISCHARGE AND RUNOFF AND THE NUTRIENT RUNOFF AS WELL.
>> IN TERMS OF THE VALUE OF THE HEMLOCKS, IN TERMS OF THE HERITAGE OF WHAT THE LAKE LOOKS LIKE, THE LANDSCAPE, THERE IS THAT VALUE.
THE ECONOMICS TO THE FISHERIES, THE VISITATION TO THE LAKE AND ALSO THE PROPERTY VALUES FOR THOSE THAT WANT TO HAVE A SLICE OF PARADISE HERE.
IN SKANEATELES LAKE, ONE THIRD OF THE SOUTHERN TIER OF THE LAKE HAS RAVINES FULL OF HEMLOCKS AND WE ARE STARTING TO SEE THE HEMLOCK CREATE THESE GHOST TREES.
IF WE LOSE THE HEMLOCKS, WE LOSE THE LAKE.
>> WE WORK WITH A LOT OF FOLKS AROUND THE STATE.
THIS IS REALLY IMPORTANT FOR OUR BIOLOGICAL CONTROL PROGRAM.
CLASSICAL BIOLOGICAL CONTROL IS USING NATURAL ENEMIES FROM AN ORGANISMS NATIVE ECOSYSTEM TO TRY TO CONTROL IT IN A NOVEL AREA, A NEW SPOT WHERE IT'S CAUSING PROBLEMS.

OUR PEAK SEASON IS JULY AND AUGUST.

THAT MEANS THAT WE WANT PEOPLE STAY HERE.
WE WANT PEOPLE TO ENJOY WINE HERE.
WE HAVE TASTING ROOMS.
WE DO HAVE CERTAIN ROOMS THAT WE USE FORE CONVENIENCE.
WE HAVE MUSIC EVENTS HERE DURING THE WEEKEND.
AND ALSO DIFFERENT FACILITIES THAT WE DO RENT OUT FOR THOSE TYPES OF THINGS, CORPORATE EVENTS AND WHAT NOT.

IS THAT SOMETHING THAT IS COMMON IN THE WINE INDUSTRY AS WELL?

WE ARE INVOLVED WITH WHAT IS CALLED THE GUEST WORKER PROGRAM, HDA PROGRAM AND WE HAVE INDIVIDUALS THAT COME STANDARDLY DURING THE YEAR.
I DON'T WANT TO SAY COMPTROLLER ISSUES BUT IT WAS KIND OF COMPTROLLER, WAS THIS-- CONTROVERSIAL WAS THE OVERTIME FOR FARM FARM WORKERS AND YOU PROBABLY FALL INTO THAT CATEGORY WHERE YOU MIGHT HAVE A LOT OF DOWN TIME.
BUT WHEN IT'S TIME TO HARVEST, HAVE YOU TO HARVEST.
>> IT DOES, AND FROM AN OVER TIME STANDPOINT, CERTAINLY THESE PEOPLE ARE HARD WORKERS.
THEY'RE DILIGENT, VERY SKILLED WORKERS ACTUALLY.
AND THE CHALLENGE BECOMES THE MARGINS THAT WE HAVE TO DEAL WITH.
AND WE ARE DICTATED BY A LOT OF FACTORS BEYOND OUR CONTROL.
SO IT'S VERY DIFFICULT FOR US TO SAY, YOU KNOW,WHAT OUR MARGIN CAN BE.
WE HAD TO BE VERY COMPETITIVE WITH OTHER FINGER LAKES WINERIES AS WELL AS THE WORLD.
>> YOU ARE BASICALLY MIMICKING WHAT WE GOT FROM A FARMER LAST SEASON, SO IT'S THE SAME IDEA.
AS YOU LOOK OUT-- I LOVE ASKING THIS QUESTION OF FOLKS LIKE YOU-- AS YOU LOOK OUT FIVE YEARS, LOOK OUT 10, 20 YEARS, WHAT DO YOU SEE DIFFERENT?
WHAT DO YOU SEE HAPPENING IN THE WINE INDUSTRY IN NEW YORK?
WHAT DO YOU SEE HAPPENING HERE?
>> THE WINE INDUSTRY I THINK IS GOING TO, LIKE ANY WINE INDUSTRY, IS GOING TO STABLE ITSELF OUT.
WE HAVE BEEN IN A GROWTH MODE FOR A LONG TIME.
I THINK IT WILL COME TO A POINT WHERE THE PEOPLE WHO REALLY ARE INTENT IN THE BUSINESS AND MAKE THE QUALITY WINE, THE PEOPLE ARE GOING TO BE IN THE BUSINESS.
I THINK WITH REGARD TO US, PRETTY MUCH THE SAME THING.
WE HAVE A SWEET SPOT AS FAR AS WE WANT TO BE WITH REGARD TO PRODUCTION.
I THINK THAT WHERE WE REACH THE SWEET SPOT, WE WANT TO MAKE SURE UTMOST QUALITY.
QUALITY IS THE MOST IMPORTANT ASPECT THAT WE CAN GO AHEAD AND EMPHASIZE HERE.
AND YOU KNOW, QUANTITY, YEAH, YOU CAN GO AHEAD AND YOU'VE GOT TO SUSTAIN THAT TO A DEGREE BUT QUALITY IS THE MOST IMPORTANT TO COMPETE.
